Re: Michael in Ireland

I waited outside Luggala Castle down the road from my house for about four hours with signs and everything... I shouted Michael, Michael! when people were in the grounds, a couple of them waved but I'm not sure if it was him or not!

I heard stories of Michael greeting fans at the back gates one day for a few minutes but never heard more about it. There is no press at all in this part of Wicklow so Michael must have loved the fact he could be with fans and be away from the paps :)

Cool, i remember at the time thinking i should drive down but then the reports were very sketching and i wasn't sure if he really was here or not. Nice videos too i hadn't seen part of them. Do you have any pics of you waiting?

OMG you and I are alike!

I haven't heard Michael saying Ireland but in his Ebony interview of 2007 he mentioned us:

You have to be able to hum it, from the farmer in Ireland to the lady who scrubs toilets in Harlem to anybody who can whistle to a child poppin’ their fingers. You have to be able to hum it.

Yes, Emerald, I'm from Ros, where are you from?

Thanks Gottobethere, I got my car in 2003 and wasn't hard for me to pick a personalized tag for it. I still have it on my car. Probably won't ever change it, Michael may not not been invincible but his legacy is..

Re: Michael in Ireland

There are so many different accents though. I think mine and the Galway one in general is quite neutral? Am I right? Haha! I love the Northern accent! I have family in Tyrone (extension of Donegal family).
I wonder what Michael thought of the accents when he was here. :)

Re: Michael in Ireland

In sad news..Eugene Lambert (who was in the RTE News June 26th news report I posted talking about Michael and the children) has died. :(

Puppeteer and ventriloquist Eugene Lambert has died, aged 82

A native of Sligo, Mr Lambert is survived by his wife Mai and eight children.

Mr Lambert was well-known for his role in the children's television series Wanderly Wagon as 'O'Brien' and the 1960s puppet series for children Murphy agus a Chairde .

He founded the Lambert Puppet Theatre in Monkstown, Co Dublin, in 1972.

An early passion for puppets and ventriloquism became a lifelong career for Mr Lambert, who was a driving force behind the International Puppet Festival of Ireland.

Emily Tully said her grandfather’s death had come as a huge shock to his wife and eight remaining children.

“He was still working, he was never somebody who would retire. He’s left a real legacy, he was a legend really, and it was a great childhood for all of us - all of us have worked in the puppet theatre at some stage," she said. "He was a creative man and he loved children’s entertainment. He never wanted to do anything other than that.”

Ms Tully described how Mr Lambert once sang Happy Birthday through one of his puppets to pop star Michael Jackson.

Jackson befriended the veteran puppeteer after playing a concert in Dublin in 1992 and visited him again with his three children on his birthday in August 2007.

The Arts Council paid tribute to Mr Lambert, describing him as “a committed and passionate artist who almost single-handedly put Ireland on the map in terms of puppet theatre”.

“From his work on RTÉ with Wanderly Wagon, to his ongoing commitment to puppet theatre, he inspired a generation of puppet theatre makers, and delighted and entertained generations of Irish children and their parents,” the council’s head of theatre, David Parnell, said.

Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen also expressed his sadness at Mr Lambert's passing, describing him as “a natural storyteller whose words were entertaining and accessible to his young audiences”.

Mr Cullen said his puppet theatre has “animated and intrigued generation after generation”.

He expressed his sincere sympathies to the Lambert family, saying “Eugene’s legacy will live on through his talented family”.

Mr Lambert had been due to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary with wife this summer.

So sad. RIP Eugene. He seemed a true gentleman. Sweet man. :(

Here's the news report again for anyone who didn't catch it first time round:

"I found him such a charming person."

Had you? Aww! Did you see Bosco?
Sad. :( He is a legend from all his contributions to Irish children's entertainment and seemed a really nice person.

Further mentions of Eugene and Michael:

Tributes Paid to Eugene Lambert

Puppeteer Eugene Lambert, who has died suddenly aged 81, was remembered today as a master of his art.

The Sligo-born performer and star of TV show Wanderly Wagon died at his home in Monkstown, Co Dublin, late last night.

An early passion for puppets and ventriloquism became a lifelong career for Mr Lambert, who counted the late pop superstar Michael Jackson among his many fans.

Jackson befriended the veteran puppeteer after playing a concert in Dublin in 1992 and visited him again with his three children on his birthday in August 2007.

Emily Tully said her grandfather, who sang Happy Birthday through one of his puppets to Jackson, was a big fan of the pop star.

“If he meets Michael Jackson up there he’ll tell him ’I was a big supporter of you’, he was so proud of that visit,” she said.

Re: Michael in Ireland

^^ awe that is nice, no i don't think he done bosco but it was a long time ago so i don't really remember to well. It's amazing at how stupid bosco seemed when we got older but then when you see the man behind it you realize the skill it took to pull it off.

Re: Michael in Ireland

Yeah. :) Bosco is Ireland's biggest kids' TV character ever!

LOL look at him! Hahaha aww.
Me and my friend used to make a "box" out of her kitchen press doors and pretend we were Bosco.

Re: Michael in Ireland

That deserves a video. RIP Eugene Lambert

The infamous magic door to the zoo, always to the zoo.

Re: Michael in Ireland

oh no! So sad to hear about Eugene. I loved watching him as a kid.. I remember his dog Judge and I just LOVED Wanderly Wagon. :D

Re: Michael in Ireland

My Mam's here singing the theme tune to Wanderly Wagon! :) She watched it as a kid. Haha, Cass, she just mentioned Judge the dog!

I have a vague recollection of going to see Bosco when I was tiny, and Mam just confirmed it! When I was 2/3 I went to see Bosco and Eugene was there. Cool stuff!

Re: Michael in Ireland

How long did Bosco go on for? I'm thinking I must have watched repeats when I was small. On imdb it says it was on in 1978! That's almost a decade before I was born!

The life and adventures of Bosco, a small red-haired puppet who lives in his "bosca" (Irish-Gaelic for box). Bosco never leaves his box but discovers the world through song and stories contributed by the regular presenters and the daily trip through a "magic door". Bosco has a large number 5 displayed on his box, due to the fact that 5 is his favourite number. Bosco speaks in Irish some of the time, using words familiar to young Irish children.

lol I love that summary. :)

Re: Michael in Ireland

I'm trying to decide my favourite Irish accent. What are all yours? What have people said about your own? I think I love how they're all so different!
I wonder if Michael had to ask people to repeat things. haha!
