Snow White luvs Peter Pan, I am not well-versed on the subject of lupus however; I do understand there are various forms. Please see the below:

Lupus erythematosus (LE) is thought to be an autoimmune disease among other connective tissue diseases like scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyositis, and mixed connective tissue disease. Within the spectrum of diseases included in LE, at one end is a disease confined mainly to the skin and referred to as discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and at the other end is a florid disease with systemic involvement of heart, lungs, brain, kidneys and other organs called systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In between the 2 ends of the spectrum are disorders like subacute cutaneous lupus. Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) has a rather sudden onset with annular or psoriasiform plaques erupting on the upper trunk, arms, and/or dorsa of hands, usually after exposure to sunlight.1 Although at the benign end of the spectrum, 1% to 5% of patients with discoid lupus may develop SLE1 and 25% of patients with SLE may develop typical chronic discoid lesions at some time during the course of their illness.2

While it is commonly accepted from simply looking at photos of Michael that he had discoid lupus, I have not seen any documentation, including the autopsy which I do not believe mentioned lupus, stating Michael's lupus went beyond discoid (DLE) to maybe SCLE as described above or beyond to SLE.

Again, I am not disputing Michael having discoid lupus. What I am disputing is this concept that lupus is the reasoning behind Michael lip-synching during the History tour.

I wish he re-recorded the vocals to give it a "live" feel to it, like Janet did for most of the tracks on her Number Ones Tour.
She actually re-recorded most of the songs and lip synched to those. Fooled me in person.

Madonna, while sings live a lot, will sometimes re-record a few songs vocals for the same reason.

Her CONFESSIONS TOUR was all live except 3 or 4 songs where she only comes in live at the end.

Remember Michael had problems with his vocal chords getting swollen (nodules?) ever since the Bad Tour. They had to cancel/reschedule a lot shows because of this not only on The Bad tour but on the Dangerous Tour as well. He even underwent surgery on his throat for that. Combine that with the effects of lupus the result can be devastating.

That MJ had lupus is mentioned in those medical papers about the treatment of his Pepsi burn - someone tried to auciton those papers a couple of years ago. In those papers there is a note from Arnold Klein to the doctor who treated Michael for the burn saying they should not give him a certain medicine because it interferes with his lupus medicine. So from that we know he did have lupus.

The autopsy does not mention any lupus (discoid or systematic) but that is simply because you cannot tell lupus from a simple autopsy. However, when you read the part about his lungs you will see that he did have lung issues - which could be related his lupus. But whether it was or not related to his lupus, it's a fact in the autopsy that he did have lung issues and a particularly sensitive lung.

Themidwestcowboy, many singers have issues with their vocal chords. If there was an issue with Michael's vocal cords during the History tour, I can understand that being the reasoning behind lip-synching. Is anyone aware of Michael having vocal surgery before/during/after the History tour?

While I appreciate your and Snow White luvs Peter Pan's responses, I personally do not feel comfortable with discoid lupus as a reason why Michael lip-synched. To be honest, I personally do not have any concern as to why Michael lip-synched in any performance.

Yeah, I had that idea for a while. Would've fooled all but the hardcore of fans who would watch countless concerts and only then start to notice similarities!

Hell, maybe he doesn't even have to re-record them... just use alternative takes that sound a bit different or something? :p

You can hear live vocals from the July 4th soundboard, Michael's vocal was always turned on but he chose when he wanted the audience to hear playback and when he wanted them to hear live vocals. Recall the hand signals. He always sang live beneath the playback. Hopefully at the Prague show, it was also recorded on Multitracks and the estate will include some of those live vocals for 'Stranger In Moscow'/'Heal The World' & 'HIStory'

Stranger In Moscow, in regards to lip synching, is in particular the WORST.

His damn backup singers and lip synching to HIS vocals.

It would not have been a huge undertaking to isolate just Michaels main vocal so that the backup singers can actually sing backup.

But yes, re-recording would have been great. I guess the closest he did was doing Janets part for SCREAM.

I am sure they kept the multitrack vocals.
But i am also sure they will not use it for upcoming releases. The reason for that is Michael didn't sang good in those moments. And he didn't sang good because he knew no one hears his real voice. So i really don't think we will ever hear those.

Oh and i hope that the Live DVD will be 5.1 sound WITH Center Acapellas :D

Again, Michael sang each song live beneath the playback! these were recorded by first of all the soundboards and then after the show they were put onto multitracks! It would be pretty dumb not to include what Michael was doing when the audience didn't hear his authentic voice at that moment in time. Especially taking into consideration the amount of supposed lip syncing he did, plus.. always a possibility.. i guess we'll see what come's to be.

I didn't read everything, but if they release Prague I think it will be a good choice for the history tour.

-It's the opening night!, and I grew up with the History Tour, so I still love it. For personal reasons I would prefer Amsterdam 1996 (first 2 nights) and Lausanne 1997 since I was there :) (nice Scream moves at 1:50 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8gu2Az0lkE)

-dancing wise on the good shows it was insane and polished
-Michael looks good and fit, everything is brandnew, the light-show is very cool, for example see starting at 1:43: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k49-iT0vuIk Have you ever seen TDCAU form HT in a better *shiny* version? I love the "space" theme of it all.

-The downside is the playback and it's unfortunate in hindsight that it went down like this. Imo they should do vocal overdubs with live vocals from this and other History concerts (and if they don't have enough material also use vocals from Royal Brunei and TII) and alternative studio takes. I think it's OK to do this, since MJ has to be presented the best it can be, and we know he can sing like nobody else, so I don't consider this cheating.
-They shouldn't mix the sound as "clean" as in the Munich version (for example Scream), the BOTDF mix above is good!
-NO BOTDF in this show, so they should edit BOTDF into this concert from a later show, maybe even from Munich
-The probably limited aspect ratio. They can either leave it 4:3 or crop it to 16:9, which wouldn't be the best idea since you lose a lot of resolution/information (especially MJs footwork)

He didn't even sang much good the moments the audience heard him.

Sorry but if they use his live vocals people will say he was a bad live singer!

I can't win with you guys, at least these live vocals were recorded which makes it a possibility to be mixed into the 5.1 surround! he sounds great on the bridge of 'Dangerous' in the amateur audio, and he also sounds great in the first verse of TDCAU in Moscow (10 days after the Prague show) when the sound mixer forgot to turn off his microphone signal.. which is why you hear double tracking, a seamless/clean rip of the live vocals for at least 2 more song's would be gladly welcomed by me.

Hopefully this is not a rumor!

But what about Dangerous 25 next year ?

Their's no rule book, they could be planning a Dangerous project also.. who knows?

Hm.. i don't think they release Prague 96 AND Dangerous 25 in one year...

Michael knew his voice wasn't being put out there. He probably half assed these songs. Singing a word here and there and breathing heavily. Why would he actually sing if no one is hearing it?
He could have sang more at one show than at another, but who's to actually say? If they don't use a live mic feed, maybe because it is for those reasons and it's not a good performance.
And they would probably put out a show the way it was heard by the audience, with the playback track.

Re: Prague 96, isn't that the one where he nearly fell doing the moonwalk towards the end of Billie Jean?

Hm.. i don't think they release Prague 96 AND Dangerous 25 in one year...

They're contracted to release 10 projects. I think 'Thriller 3D' is a John Landis project with The Estate's blessing (if it's still being released, that is).

Can someone please post a link to an article or such showing Michael was indeed suffering from a form of lupus that affected his lungs (not the version that effects the skin primarily) and/or had some health issue effecting his lungs during the History tour and this was the primary reason for lip-synching. Thank you in advance.

I have a much different perspective from some of the thoughts posted regarding the History tour performances. As the years went on, Michael continued to be known as an extraordinary performer. However, his performances were becoming more known for the spectacle than the artistry which is the unfortunate effect of being an other-worldly talent relegated to pop star status. The King of Pop label had its privileges and its curses.

This is why I said in a previous thread I was not looking forward to a History era documentary. I personally see that tour as a man making compromises. At 38 or so years old, this was a man who:
- did not want to tour yet, most likely, had a contractual agreement to promote History,
- knew more monies were available to him through touring even at that time,
- was attempting to get pass a horrific allegation in front of a public that he could not be sure trusted him,
- had to accept a failed marriage,
- was starting his own family in a manner that may not have been his ideal,
- AND, still not wanting to disappoint his fans.

The list above is just the issues Michael went through that the public knew about. We do not know what other private issues were concerning him at the time. I can fully understand such a man deciding to lip-synch when deciding what to sacrifice in that scenario. That is much to handle and instead of taking time for himself, he toured. He was such a consummate professional that most do not even remember those public issues when he arrived on stage to perform. Audiences were transfixed by the man's talent.
Actually Michael got married again during HIStory Tour and his first child was born. So I don't think he was sad during the tour.

Debbie got pregnant during the making of Ghosts in 1996, Michael could have proposed sometime after that.. all i know is that i'm sure Debbie got very jealous when he thrusted his hips & caressed all those females

Something about Michael I always loved and still do, is how INTO the moment he got. How much he gave to his art. He'd give everything, and you'd feel it, and you'd be captivated by it.

When he's lip-synching he's not giving his all. It's all about the show. It's so painful. It's like a caged bird. Let the thing out and let it fly, man.

I'd so much rather have Thriller 3D in cinemas - with reservations.

I would like the 'Off The Wall' & 'Thriller' projects for this year, in 2016 i would like to have Prague Blu-Ray & Dangerous 25 w/ a Blu-Ray.. if they put some effort in. 2 projects in one year has to happen at some point, in 2017 i wouldn't expect a new album.. but possibly a box set with some demo's & B-Sides such as Shout & Can't Get Outta The Rain..

That would be a dumb move, get a projector & watch Moonwalker on a 200'' screen.

I think Smooth Criminal is the greatest short film of all time, and it deserves the big screen treatment.

It would be dumb to release 'Smooth Criminal' though, when it was made for 'Moonwalker' might as well screen the feature film for it's 30th anniversary, and release later on Blu-Ray with behind the scenes etc.

Back on topic, i find it great that Michael sang live beneath the playback.. means the estate always have that option if they feel that his genuine vocal performance will attract more viewers to see the concert in Theaters.

I'd be happy with seeing Moonwalker in 3D
