Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am recently made his live-action acting debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He’s also just released a new Peas album (The E.N.D), his own website and collaborating with some other musician you may have heard of.
CRAVEONLINE: You do so many things, where do you get your energy from?
Will.i.am: Thinking about where I was 15 years ago. 15 years ago I was 18, 19 years old and not that I was in a bad place, but it was a scary place because I was transitioning from a dream and that dream not happening, being depressed, poor, so that’s what keeps me going. They say, “Hey, they want you to fly to New York to do a benefit raising money for kids. You wanna go?” F*ck it, let’s go. Hey, Michael Jackson wants us to come back. Michael Jackson wants you to give him a beat. Michael Jackson wants to do a feed? Yeah, he wants you to fly to Ireland, be there for a week. That’s where I go.

CRAVEONLINE: How was that experience with Michael Jackson?

Will.i.am: That felt like a dream. You’re there in Ireland. It’s green hills. It’s Michael Jackson. You’re in the cottage making beats, dance beats. He’s like dancing and sh*t. I’m like, “I’m hungry.” He says, “Why don’t you take the horse? Take the horse and pick apples. It’s wonderful. We love doing it. The horses love going apple picking.” I’m like, “All right, I’ll f*cking go.” I swear to God. I’m on a f*cking horse. Michael Jackson’s like, “Wow, it’s great.” The horse is picking apples. I’m like picking apples and junk, putting them in a bag. I’m like wow, this is like picking apples with Michael Jackson on horseback. Look at that sh*t, right?
CRAVEONLINE: Will that be a good comeback?
Will.i.am: The dude keeps breaking records. He holds the highest amount of records that you could sell. No one’s ever going to sell that amount of records. Why? Because there are no more record stores. So you’re never going to beat his records. Never, ever, ever in the history of records in life. Not even you, never. How about that? How about no one’s ever going to outsell Michael Jackson at selling records because the record industry is over. Game over. There’s no more record stores. With no more record stores there’s no more pressing plants. With no more pressing plants, there’s no more charts. Now he broke another record. What’d he sell? A million tickets? It was like 500,000 in an hour. The thing broke down basically. The dude’s like, “Okay, why don’t you just like?”

CRAVEONLINE: But can he perform still?

Will.i.am: He was in my house. It’s one thing you hear rumors, but when the guy’s in your house, laying on your floor as you’re playing beats. He’s like, “Will.i.am, I love this beat.” He’s laying and his feet are up on the chair, he’s kicking his feet. I’m like dude, Michael Jackson’s laying on my floor. Michael Jackson’s laying on my floor. He’s testing his voice and three hours has passed. He’s just mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi, mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi. He’s doing both voice testing just to sing for five minutes. He’s testing his voice for three hours to sing for five minutes. I don't know. Fergie don’t do that sh*t. Usher don’t do that sh*t. None of the people that you think still got it do that. I’ve seen it, in my house.

CRAVEONLINE: Is that because he’s more fragile?

Will.i.am: No, that’s because he’s a perfectionist and he just likes testing his voice. “I just love, you know, this is all we have is flesh and bones. That’s it. It’s just flesh. That’s all we got. I want to protect it and take care of it, because this is my voice. This is my thing.” That’s right. I’m like dude, can we record now? Because it’s three hours, and it’s only going take five minutes. “No, I just want to warm it up.” Like dude, that’s hot. It’s warmed up. But I don't know what he’s going to use from what we’ve done, but I have memories, the stuff I did on Thriller 25 is up. If he uses any of the original things that we’ve done, great. If he didn’t, I have my memories and the things that we’ve done is awesome. I learned so much from the dude. He’s cool. And he has it. I’ve seen it. He mi mi mi’d for three hours. Perfect pitch.

CRAVEONLINE: Will you be there at the concert?

Will.i.am: I don't know but I know that one time I was in Vegas and he’s like, “Oh, I heard you’re in Vegas.” I was like, “Yeah, we have a show tonight. Can you come?” “What time you guys go on?” We go on at 9 o’clock. I swear to God, “Oh, rats.” He said rats. “Oh, rats, I can’t. I’ve got to put the kids to sleep.” All right, well after we perform with the Peas, I’m performing with Prince. You should come to the show. So Prince invited me to perform with him at the Palms. Maybe you can come see me perform with Prince. So Michael Jackson says, “Oh really? I’d love to. Call Prince and see if it’s cool.” I call Prince’s assistant. She’s like sure. So I’m like, “Yo, Mike, it’s great.” Come on, dude. This sh*t ain’t real. To me, that that happened, it sounds like a big ass lie, right? Yeah, I’ll just call Prince and then bring Michael Jackson but it’s the realest sh*t. So, I’m late. I’m late. I’m in the cab, like aw, man, what a time to be f*ckin’ late. I’m always late and I’m late for Michael Jackson to see me perform with Prince. So I hop off the cab and I’m running in Las Vegas. I’m running and people are like, “Wyclef!” I’m like f*ck you, right? Then I run and I get to the place and I perform for Prince and I walk off stage and Michael’s there. He’s like, “That was awesome.” Mind you, we were already in Ireland. He’s like, “That was awesome. I didn’t know you rapped.” I was like, “What? You don’t know I rap? I’m in the Black Eyed Peas.” “I didn’t think it was you that was the rapper. I thought it was the other guy.” I was like, “No, that’s me, dude.” “You’re awesome, that was awesome. We need to do something like that on my record where you rap and I sing.” Yeah, but that was a great experience to have Mike see me perform with Prince. It was nuts. That’s great, cool.

When you drop some Michael Jackson, like early Michael Jackson, there's something about his attitude and the 1970s that's a cultural reference point you're vibing off. And when you can see him on a screen, it just adds another cultural reference point and gets people more excited. Or Bon Jovi's ridiculous hair, which adds to the experience of the hilarious cheesiness of "Livin' on a Prayer."

I am no semiologist, but to the best of my knowledge the only men regularly photographed or filmed touching themselves in this kind of area are rappers, Michael Jackson, and lead actors in a specialist type of erotic movie.

5. Jennifer Batten

Jennifer Batten makes any list of San Diego’s great female musicians on pure technique. That she’s achieved her rightfully earned rep as tops in her field is even more impressive when you consider her trade: guitar goddess. In the embarrassingly über-male landscape of rock’s guitar hero pantheon, Batten not only excelled in proficiency and form during her career, she did at a time when the craft was easily at its most competitive and (some would argue) absurdist peak: the late 1980s.
Batten took up rock guitar at age 8, and eventually inspired by the likes of Jeff Beck and Eddie Van Halen, she would attend and later teach at the G.I.T. (Guitar Institute of Technology). Having perfected the “two handed tapping” or “hammer on” technique pushing guitar rock to its penultimate virtuosity at the time, Batten would land her breakthrough gig in 1987-as lead guitarist for Michael Jackson’s “Bad”tour.
Since then, Batten has written a book on her guitar stylings, toured with several Jackson world tours and recently signed on to play in Jeff Beck’s backing band. When pop music can count on one hand its’ “famous” female guitarists, Batten’s contributions can hardly be overestimated.

Economic Reality Prompts a Makeover at 'Neverland'

Investors Refurbish Michael Jackson's Estate; No More Orangutans

LOS OLIVOS, Calif. -- After he was acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005, associates say, Michael Jackson vowed he would never return to Neverland.

The 2,600-acre estate, named for a magical place where children never age, has since yielded to reality and time. The amusement-park rides, elephants and orangutans have been hauled away. The two helicopter landing pads are empty. The private railway line stands idle and the ornate "Neverland" gates that framed the driveway are in storage. Bats hang over the doorway to the building that housed Mr. Jackson's private arcade; guano stains the threshold.

But now the ranch is playing a role in an effort to rehabilitate Mr. Jackson's finances. Since January, more than 80 workers have been toiling at the ranch as part of a plan by real-estate investment firm Colony Capital LLC to convert the former money pit into a lucrative asset. The company has spent more than $3 million on landscaping and repairs to the property's electrical and plumbing systems. Soon Colony plans to bring in a small herd of Clydesdales to show visitors some signs of life on the all-but-abandoned estate.

Kyle Forsyth, Colony's project manager, describes the estate's Tudor-style buildings and savannah-like grasslands as "English country manor meets Kenya." Eventually, Colony hopes to sell the ranch, located in Santa Barbara County, in its entirety. Subdividing it, says Mr. Forsyth, "would destroy it."

The state of Neverland is a reminder of the excesses that precipitated Mr. Jackson's financial decline. In his years at the ranch, he stuffed it with items ranging from antique furniture to arcade-style videogames. After he was twice accused of molesting boys on the property, he had to shell out for high-priced legal teams. No criminal charges were brought the first time around, in 1993, and he reached a settlement in a civil lawsuit. In the second case, he was acquitted of criminal charges in 2005.

The 50-year-old singer's debts now stand at around $500 million, according to three people familiar with his finances. The value of Mr. Jackson's biggest assets -- music copyrights that include 251 Beatles songs as well as his own compositions -- probably still exceed his growing debt, according to these people. Mr. Jackson's manager said the singer wasn't available for comment.

Last spring, Mr. Jackson defaulted on a $24.5 million loan backed by the ranch. Los Angeles-based Colony bought the note for $23 million and put the title into a joint venture it formed with the singer.

As Neverland is brought back to life, concert promoter AEG Live is trying to resurrect Mr. Jackson's music career. He is booked to play 50 shows at London's O2 arena over several months starting in July. If all goes according to plan, Mr. Jackson could make as much as $50 million, according to people familiar with financial details of the shows. Adding dates in Europe, Asia and North America could net him $400 million, these people say.

But Mr. Jackson has already delayed the first four shows in London, citing a need for additional dress rehearsals. In April, he pulled out of a plan to auction most of the personal effects and furnishings from Neverland. And he recently parted ways with Tohme Tohme, a Colony Capital business associate who for several months acted as his manager, striking the deals for the Neverland joint venture, the auction and the London concerts. Taking Dr. Tohme's place is Frank DiLeo, Mr. Jackson's manager from 1984 to 1989. Mr. Jackson didn't offer an explanation for the change, according to associates notified about it.

Mr. DiLeo declined to comment. Dr. Tohme said: "I wish [Mr. Jackson] all the best."

As it attempts to turn Neverland into a salable property, Colony is trying to walk a fine line between removing the taint of scandal while preserving enough of Mr. Jackson's quirks to remind potential buyers why the property is so famous in the first place.

Before it puts the estate on the market, Colony plans to change its name and allow local charities to use it to host fund-raisers.

"We think we made a very smart real-estate deal that was to the benefit of Michael and Colony," says the real-estate firm's chief executive, Tom Barrack. He believes the estate could fetch $70 million to $90 million, in which case Mr. Jackson could also realize a tidy profit. "Should Michael Jackson's career be reaccelerated, it will have substantial additional value."

The property now known as Neverland was built in 1981 by real-estate developer William Bone, who named it Sycamore Valley Ranch. The main house's 13,000-square-foot interior is still trimmed in the oak paneling installed by Mr. Bone.

Mr. Jackson paid $19.5 million for the ranch in 1987 and rechristened it Neverland.

Among the $35 million worth of amenities he added were enough amusement-park rides for a state fair, a zoo, a go-kart track and two separate railway lines -- one large enough to accommodate full-sized antique steam engines.

A 50-seat theater features state-of-the-art projection and sound systems, a private viewing balcony, and a stage that includes trap doors for magicians' assistants. Mr. Jackson converted a rustic red barn into a herpetarium with displays for a dozen exotic and venomous snakes, including a Burmese python and a monocled cobra. He created a Neverland Valley Fire Department, with a small fleet of working engines and full-time firefighters who were occasionally dispatched to battle brushfires on neighboring properties.

At its peak, Neverland boasted a staff of 150, and cost $10 million a year to maintain, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mr. Jackson spent more than 15 years living at the ranch. He wrote songs for 1991's "Dangerous" album while sitting in a treehouse overlooking the estate's four-acre pond. His three children were home-schooled on the third floor of the main house.

Mr. Jackson also used the property for guests, ranging from attendees of high-priced fund-raisers to local school kids and children with cancer or other serious illnesses. The property's theater was built with two isolation rooms so that immune-compromised chemotherapy patients could watch movies without being exposed to other children's germs.

After being acquitted of the criminal charges in a 2005 jury trial in nearby Santa Maria, Mr. Jackson left Neverland for destinations that included Dubai, Bahrain and London. People close to the singer say he didn't return to Neverland largely because he felt traumatized by the events surrounding his arrest and trial.

Last fall, Mr. Jackson moved to Los Angeles' high-end Hotel Bel Air from the Las Vegas area. In a bid to save money, he settled into a nearby $100,000-a-month rental property in January, according to Dr. Tohme.

While Colony seeks to remove some reminders of Mr. Jackson's tenure, company executives recognize that the singer's imprint remains. Mr. Forsyth says express-mail delivery drivers stopped taking packages to the property when they were addressed to "Sycamore Valley Ranch," because they didn't recognize the name. For official correspondence, the ranch for now is called "Sycamore Valley/Neverland."

In one corner of the property sits Mr. Jackson's old tour bus: a mustard-yellow recreational vehicle with six-foot-high portraits of the Three Stooges painted on the outside. The Victorian-style "train station" has been restored. A stone-and-flower rendering of Mr. Jackson's logo for the property -- a child's silhouette, seated on a crescent moon -- still adorns a hillside. The company hasn't decided whether to scrap an elaborate fort and a make-believe "Indian village."

"You can't wipe out Neverland entirely," says Mr. Forsyth. "It's part of the history of the place."

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson's remarkable 30-year career has scaled unparalleled musical, commercial and critical heights. His myriad achievements include being responsible for the best-selling album of all time, pioneering the music-video medium, and virtually redefining the concept of the modern pop star.

Jackson has come a long way since bursting onto the charts in 1969 as the Jackson Five's magnetic 10 year-old lead singer. The seventh family of nine children in Gary, Indiana, Michael began performing at the age of five when his father Joe, a musician turned steel mill worker, assembled the Jackson Five with Michael, and his o1der brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Tito. Thanks in large part to Michael's precocious talent, the Jackson Five quickly progressed from performing in local talent shows to landing a record deal with Motown. The group scored 13 Top 20 singles for Motown and continued to turn out hits through the 1970’s while Michael spun off into a parallel solo career.

Michael began to exercise an unprecedented level of control of his musical and business affairs following the Jacksons' departure from Motown in 1975. He achieved substantial solo success with his 1979 album Off the Wall, which marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration with producer Quincy Jones and spawned the hits “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” and “Rock With You”. Those singles previewed the distinctive rock/soul fusion that Jackson would later explore more fully on his 1983 blockbuster album Thriller.

It was the 45 million-selling Thriller that marked Jackson’s ascendancy to superstar status, establishing him as pop’s preeminent presence, both on the radio and on the still-new MTV, where his innovative song and dance videos for “Billy Jean”, “Beat It”, and “Thriller” helped pioneer the rock video form. In 1984, Jackson temporarily re-teamed with his brothers for the successful Victory album and tour.

Jackson’s new status was underlined by his involvement with the all-star USA For Africa benefit single “We Are the World”, which he co-wrote with Lionel Richie. His subsequent solo albums Bad and Dangerous further expanded his musical legacy, as did the 1995 double CD HIStory: Past, Present and Future: Book One, which combined 15 previously released hits with 15 new songs. That collection was followed two years later by Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix, which combined new material with dance mixes of his hits. 2001’s Invincible, a collection of original songs, spawned multiple chart hits.

Now in his fourth decade as a songwriter, performer, recording artist and public figure, Michael Jackson remains a consistent musical innovator and stylistic trendsetter.

Agree very mutch on the point you make about peple interpreting practicing as a sign of being fragile.

But: The way Will think about breaking records, is a good example of how Michael is different from most people: he doesn`t seem to limit himself by thinking like that. He just thinks differently. Michael is innovative in a different way then most people, and that is why he is the one holding the records. He knows that the impossible can be done, while most people limits themself to what they already know.

yep...ur last paragraph is so on point about how most people think as opposed to MJ. the writer of the first article about neverland thinks in limited fashion, which is the thinking dujoure. that's why a success like MJ will always be VERY RARE. but MJ will continue to be as succcesful as he is. however, the writer of the second article is one of the rare thinkers that is giving MJ his props. i rarely see articles written like that about MJ, tho that article is the truth, while the first article is a lie, frought with bitterness, envy, hatred of the innocence of childhood, a mentality of financial greed(which leads to their own personal recessions), 'according to''s so u don't even get the impression the writer is certain of what he or she is saying. just tons of hearsay which is so regular in those articles. but those are the articles stuck most on repeat, constantly reminding us of the trial, and trying to put as negative a spin on his acquittal as possible, and trying to make the article sound true, not only by repeating it, but injecting what we already heard Michael truthfully say about the real reason for leaving Neverland.

All of the play's three acts feel oddly disconnected from their specific time frames. The second act, "Summer Dreams," is set in 1957 and references the Civil Rights Movement and the Korean War. The third, "A Summer Memory," is set in 1970 and 2000 and touches on the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon, the Jackson Five and, in particular, Michael Jackson
