Jackson turns up at Madiba's birthday bash

Ingrid Salgado

Pop icon Michael Jackson rocked up at Nelson Mandela's Houghton, Johannesburg home on Sunday with a personalised birthday cake to honour the former president as he turned 81.

Jackson joined kwaito group Bongo Maffin and Mandela's 40-odd children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for an intimate family lunch with South Africa's favourite citizen, who is also celebrating his first wedding anniversary.

Mandela spent the morning enjoying breakfast with his wife, Graca Machel, and the grandchildren who live in his
Johannesburg home.

Mandla Mandela, son of Mandela's deceased son Thembekile, said his grandfather awoke on Sunday in a jubilant mood.

"He always wakes up with a smile," added Mandla, speaking at the gates of the tightly-secured residence.

Jackson was barely visible behind the tinted windows of the green van that escorted him inside the high walls surrounding Mandela's property.

Journalists waiting outside got a better view of the cream cake - adorned with flowers and gold icing proclaiming "Happy Birthday Madiba" - that Jackson brought with him from Sun City to present to Mandela.

The singer arrived in South Africa last week. He visited Mandela in March and was also a guest at a concert last year which celebrated Mandela's 80th birthday.

Apart from the pop star's presence, Sunday's celebrations were low-key.

"He's decided that this year he wants it quiet," said Mandela's private secretary.

"They (Mandela and Machel) have had so little time in the past to spend like this, it's really quite special," she said.

Mandela's family had a few surprises up their sleeves for the world's most famous ex-political prisoner.

His youngest daughter, Zinzi Mandela-Hlongwane, said his grandchildren were planning a "special programme to welcome him back as a full-time member of the family".

Last year, it was Mandela's turn for surprises.

The then-president and Machel gave the media the slip and tied the knot on his 80th birthday in a secret ceremony attended only by family and close friends.

His 1998 birthday celebrations also served as a fundraiser for charities. Concerts, banquets and children's parties were held to raise money for Mandela's favourite cause: South Africa's children.

This year, gifts and congratulatory notes from the public, business leaders and politicians have streamed into Mandela's private office.

But those in the know say presents are the last thing Madiba wants.

"You can't really buy him anything. He has everything he needs," said Mandla who, at 25, is the eldest grandchild.

"All we can give him on a day like this is our heart and our love ... Being with him means the world to him," he said.

And Mandela's eldest daughter, Makaziwe, added: "I don't buy gifts. He just needs me."

Her half-sister, Zinzi, said she had given her father several Madiba shirts.

Bongo Maffin member, Speedy, brought no gift as he was invited to the lunch only on Saturday night. But he was "very excited" at being able to congratulate Madiba personally, and at the prospect of meeting Jackson.

Several well-wishers turned up at Mandela's home on Sunday, hoping to glimpse the former statesman, but were turned away by security guards.

Deputy President Thabo Mbeki led the nation in wishing Mandela well on Sunday.

"On this very special occasion, the whole country is reminded of the wonderful gift he has given us all, of love and peace among all South Africans, black and white, for which we are eternally indebted," Mbeki said in a statement.

"The president, government and people of South Africa wish Madiba many many happy returns."

Mbeki, who is on holiday in North Africa, said that the ideals for which Mandela had struggled "at great personal cost" - reconciliation, social transformation and nation building - remained the cornerstone of the new government's policies.

Mandela will remain in Johannesburg until Tuesday, when he hosts a farewell function for gardeners of his former Cape Town residence, Genadendal.

On Friday he is due to attend a conference hosted by Frankel Pollak, and on Saturday will be a special guest at a soccer match in KwaZulu-Natal. - Sapa

Chris Brown Has Michael Jackson Stories, Three Films on Tap

Earlier this year, Rolling Stone named Chris Brown the “Best New Michael Jackson”, so it made sense that Brown told us a story about the King of Pop when he stopped by for lunch last week: “He’s one of the most difficult guys to get to do anything,” Brown says. “I’ve done the World Music Awards [with him], and he’s called me for my birthday — he did it the superstar way and had his security [call] for him and say ‘Yeah, I got Michael on the phone.’”
“[Jackson] was telling me ‘Happy Birthday’ and I was like ‘Thank you, we need to do a record.’ He’s like, ‘Oh, definitely. Will.i.am was telling me about it, so we need to do it.’ It didn’t actually happen how we wanted it, but hopefully in the future it’ll work out,” Brown says.

God, I feel so sorry for Michael sometimes...I mean he calls up these youngins for their birthdays -- Michael Jackson took the time of day to ring them up for their birthdays and the KOP gets hassled into making 'records' with the top 40 twits (and , I like Chris Brown -- of all the annoying singers out there singing the same tune with a different name, I happen to this Brown is a good one out of them -- he's a great dancer and has had a few decent songs ) but STILL -- I wish they'd all (ne-yos, ushers and chris browns) realise this is Michael Jackson -- you just say Thank You when he rings you up..Michael Jackson doesn't make records with everyone and their mother.

:p anyhows..interesting tit bit but ofcourse Michael is going to be diplomatic with these things...so I hope Chris Brown nor anyone else does not end up with their hopes deflated when they don't 'do records' together!

Honestly when is the recycling of other artists gonna stop already? Why can't chris just be himself?

 I can't believe that some news site is releasing a 10 year old news article. Anyway let me go look for some mentionings to liven up this news thread up.

Michael Jackson Mentionings:

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article4106284.ece

It’s a question that we’ve all asked ourselves at some point: “What if Michael Jackson had starred in Star Wars.” It’s a question that can at last be answered, thanks to some fine detective work by i09, the world’s finest science fiction blog. Captain Eo was a short 3-D sci-fi adventure made for showing in Disney’s theme parks.
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, with George Lucas in the executive producer’s chair, it combined the “cute and clumsy alien” aesthetic of Lucas’s later Star Wars with a gritty, realistic drama of magical song and dance numbers healing the pain that drove Anjelica Houston to become an evil space queen with a questionable manicure.
This compilation of clips rather suggests that Jackson was probably well advised to focus his attention on his popular music career. It’s a video that should be required viewing for every pop star who fancies trying his hand at the movie business.

Vocally, in both her rapping and singing, there is a touch of Lauryn Hill about her, but 28-year-old Estelle also shines on the fun and energy front. The middle section was given over to her on-stage DJ (who sampled an eclectic mix from Michael Jackson to Justin Timberlake, to current hype-hit, Wiley's Wearing My Rolex) during which her eight-strong band all took to the floor ironically to "bust some moves".

It is very difficult for me to say whom specifically influences my musical style the most because I have been influenced by so many different artists. Growing up, my parents exposed me to various styles of music, and I grew up listening to and appreciating all genres of music. My father would play a lot Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, David Sanborn, Al Green, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Marvin Gaye, George Benson, Bob Marley, and many others just around the house.

Timbaland remains one of Elliott's major collaborators. What she and the veteran producer share is "deeper than this music industry thing," Elliott said.
"There's a chemistry between us that will never leave. Like Janet (Jackson) and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Like Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones -- that kind of chemistry," she said. "Not to say it can't work if you get with someone else. But, just because a producer's hot, it doesn't mean it'll automatically work."

Has anyone heard of this guy? I guess he might be a fake... since he was arrested.

Ex-Souderton man faces court on music scam charges

A former Souderton man accused of bilking more than $100,000 from multiple victims while posing as a music mogul on an Internet dating site was ordered today to face theft and fraud charges in Montgomery County Court.

Paul S. Krueger, 50, waived his right to a preliminary hearing at District Court in Souderton.

He'll remain in Montgomery County Prison under $500,000 bail while awaiting trial. Assistant District Attorney Robert Sander said there have been no discussions about a possible plea in the case.

"He's going to state prison for a while," Sander said.

Krueger made no comment during his brief court appearance.

Investigators say Krueger used the Internet site MillionaireMatch.com to persuade 13 people, mostly women, to invest in a music company he told them he owned. Krueger said he was a music producer who during his career worked with the likes of Michael Jackson and was nominated for a Grammy award, the prosecutor said.

Sander said Krueger is a homeless gambling addict who used a laptop computer to pull off the scheme and use the money his alleged victims sent to him to support his habit at New Jersey shore casinos.

Krueger was charged with multiple counts of theft, theft by deception, deceptive or fraudulent business practices, Pennsylvania Securities Act violations and related crimes.

He's scheduled to be arraigned in Montgomery County Court on Aug. 6.

About 200 students ages 3 to 18 from all over the Sacramento area had a song to dance to in the "Saturday at the Movies" performance. From Disney songs to Michael Jackson's “Thriller,” there was something for just about everyone.

When Michael Jackson and Madonna checked in to the recently acquired Rocco Forte hotel, they were following in the footsteps of the famous of yesteryear – including legends such as Swiss resident Charlie Chaplin.

Was watching E!'s 'Daily 10' they are hosting all this week in las vegas which is funny since mike is in vegas aswell and they had christian audigier today on and co-host catt sadler mentioned how christian is so famous that MJ showed up at his birthday party. They didn't talk about him anymore than that just simply a mention there.

Chris Brown is bordering on disrespectful with that sh*t. That's not the first time he's said something which could be taken negatively. All while they have a picture of him wearing a cheap imitation of the Beat It jacket. Chris can't get his own style because he's nothing but a high payed imitation act who keeps getting worse. Maybe Michael doesn't want to waste the time singing with someone who can barely stay on key. Whatever.

You ain't Michael Chris, you ain't anywhere near that level, niether in terms of talent or fame, and you never will be. Shoot, you'll be lucky to be around in another five years. So you better keep your arrogance in check.

I'll put this in the latest thread. Mods can still add it to the new news thread as well. I imagine these will be old videos of MIchael's but it will be nice to see them get some exposure to a new generation of potential fans.

New MTV Show “Is Going to Blow Everyone’s Mind”
10-Jun-2008
Written by: Hillary Frazier

Pete Wentz is bringing music back to Music Television.

According to Buzznet, newly married and father-to-be Pete Wentz told AbsolutePunk that his new MTV show “is going to blow everyone’s mind.” The new show, F’N MTV, debuts Friday and will bring more music back to MTV. The first episode will include a performace by Panic at the Disco, says Buzznet. Wentz said to AbsolutePunk, “We had an idea for a show to be on a music network that would play only videos . . . and had the idea to be on MTV, as the name is “Music Television.” He also added, “I can’t even explain what people should expect.” Reportedly, videos from Blink 182, The Cure, The Replacements, and Michael Jackson will appear on the show, as well as videos from some unknown bands, and rare-footage from well knowns.

Wentz said to doubtful music listeners, “I feel like a lot of times people complain because sandpaper is too rough, you know? I don’t think that this show is going to revolutionize the world. It’s not going to change music. It doesn’t show that Pete Wentz is the hero of the MTV generation or anything like that. All I wanted to see is some more videos get played on MTV.”

Commercials for the new show featured Hills bad-guys Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, separating Wentz’s show from the “reality” MTV has become.

Here's a mentioning:

Missy Elliott Changes Album Title, Explains Concept
June 11th, 2008 | Author: ------Nas isn’t the only one in Hip Hop changing his album name after consideration of a former title [click to read]. Just months ago, Missy Elliott rewarded her fans with the album title FANomenal. Though it looked to be a nice nod, her own endeavors and plans are now in the driver’s seat. The new title of her seventh studio album will be Block Party, and it is currently looking at an August release date, from what she has told Billboard.com.
Her decision on changing the album title was the easiest way she could get the message across to her fans about the style she was going for on her latest project. “There are a lot of dance joints on there. It's one of those albums you can play out in the streets.”
As if to justify her resilience in Hip Hop, Missy went on stating, “This album is probably more musical and melodic than my previous ones. A lot of my albums are really Hip Hop-driven, with tinges of other music genres. But this album is Hip Hop, with a sort of U.K. Hip Hop sound to it.”
Providing more recent collaboration credits (Danja, Pharrell, T-Pain), Missy Elliott was adamant about her almost-always main producer, Timbaland. “There's chemistry between us that will never leave…Like Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones, that kind of chemistry.
Not to say it can't work if you get with someone else. But, just because a producer's hot, it doesn't mean it'll automatically work. People always ask if we're still working together, and the answer is we will always work together. He's always going to be involved, even if it is just on one record. That's my brother. I respect and honor what he says.”

Pete Wentz Tells AbsolutePunk New MTV Show 'Is Going to Blow Everyone's Mind'
In a new interview with AbsolutePunk, Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz discussed everything from bringing music back to MTV to waiting around for Snoop Dogg to show up at his house.

As Fall Out Boy fans are well aware, Wentz's new show, "F'N MTV," debuts Friday at 8 p.m. The show will showcase unreleased videos, performances from featured bands and more to coax the audience to get involved. The first episode will also include a performance from Panic at the Disco,

"We had an idea for a show to be on a music network that would play only videos ... and had the idea to be on MTV, as the name is 'Music Television,' " Wentz wryly told AP.

According to Wentz, "[It] is going to probably blow everyone's mind. I can't even explain what people should expect." Other artists slated for video premieres on "F’'N MTV" include blink-182, The Cure, The Replacements and Michael Jackson. Judging from Wentz's description, we can expect to see some footage of well-known artists in very rare form, indeed: Think Snoop and Willie Nelson collaborating on a country music video, for one.

To those skeptical of a good music show airing on MTV, Wentz challenged, "I feel like a lot of times people complain because sandpaper is too rough, you know? I don't think that this show is going to revolutionize the world. It's not going to change music. It doesn't show that Pete Wentz is the hero of the MTV generation or anything like that. All I wanted to see is some more videos get played on MTV." With a 52-minute slot on Friday evenings and limited commercial breaks, it seems like Wentz might just get his wish.

As to whether or not he sees himself venturing further into television and movies, Wentz explained, "I think that I'm pretty content with what I do. I realize that I waited around for Snoop Dogg to show up at my house yesterday, and I realize that being on the other end of things isn't [always] the greatest or the easiest."

http://www.buzznet.com/musicnews/pete-wentz-tells-absolutepunk-new-j2494211/

I hope this will really happen as announced cause to bring the music and the music videos back to MTV would be a great thing.

Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy) - 06.06.08
Posted on 06/09/08 by Tony Pascarella

Q: Who should we expect to see in some of these older videos?

A: I went and did some man-on-the-street stuff for promos and actually 90% of the people came back and said their favorite video of all time was a Michael Jackson video. So we're definitely going to play something of Michael's. I'm probably going to play The Cure's "Pictures of You." I'm thinking about playing The Replacements. I was thinking about playing some Blink, too. A lot of people were saying they wanted to see some Blink. I have a little bit of leeway to mess around with, and the cool thing is that some of the new videos are actually really cool. This Snoop Dogg video is going to probably blow everyone's mind. I can't even explain what people should expect.
