Joe Jackson turns 80
by Rhonda Gillespie
So what is a celebrity dad to do on the occasion of his 80th birthday?
Throw a party at a swank downtown nightclub and arrive in a stretch limo with a swarm of young, female admirers Velcroed all over him?
That is how Joe Jackson, father of the famous Jackson 5 clan and superstar daughter, Janet, celebrated last Thursday at The Joynt.
Joseph “Joe” Jackson was a very hands on father and manager and kept a hawk's eye on the then-growing music career of the Jackson 5, which included his sons Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael.
Joe gave up his own career as a guitar player in a band he started with his brother to launch and manage his sons' music careers.
The Jackson 5 was world-renowned and commanded an international following, and were the first Black teens to do so.
Though Joe had introduced his boys to the industry, shortly after signing the Jackson 5 to Motown, the record company's Barry Gordy took over as manager.
But Joe Jackson never stayed far away from his children's careers, even after the Jackson siblings all eventually left their father’s management company.
He was known to be strict with his children. There were reports that he was even physically abusive.
The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, recalled being so intimidated by his father as an adolescent that Joe's presence made him vomit.
In her 1991 book LaToya: Growing up in the Jackson Family, LaToya Jackson openly and poignantly accused her father of physical and sexual abuse. She said in the book that Joe had sexually abused the oldest daughter, Reebie.
Joe and Reebie denied LaToya’s claims. Latoya, whose singing career was short-lived, later recanted her claims.
He was born July 26, 1928 in Fountain Hill, Ark. In 2002, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame proclaimed Joe Jackson the Best Entertainment Manager of All Time.

The Oakland-based writer criticizes how American mass media view the black experience
By Erin Aubry Kaplan, Special to The Times
WRITER AND activist Ishmael Reed's newest book first struck me as a bit unnecessary. "Mixing It Up" is a collection of essays and articles focused on the treatment of race in the American media.
Just when you think Reed might be overstating his case, he puts everything in perspective. In a chapter on the media coverage of the Michael Jackson child molestation cases, consider his poetic argument in defense of the pop star's penchant for changing his face:
" California, where I live, is the Mecca of losing oneself, and becoming something different from what you began as. Out here a steroid-pumped B actor who has rented his face to some elderly social Darwinists can become governor.
Brooklyn-born men and women become swamis and adopt Buddhism as a hobby. . . . And the current president, born to a patrician New England family, who was AWOL from his National Guard duties, enjoys dressing up as Tom Mix or Chuck Yeager. Jackson isn't a freak; Jackson is an American."

SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND? – NEW SIGNINGS
This week we’re pleased to introduce you to some new additions to the Sony/ATV UK family – some you know, and some are so early their tracks are still only available to listen to on myspace – but they’re all so great we just can’t wait to share our discoveries.
Will Young
Will Young needs no introduction; however for those of you who may have lived without access to a TV, radio or any music in the last decade this is for you. Will Young won Pop Idol in 2002, was nominated for eight Brit Awards and took home two. He’s delved into acting with a role in the BBC film “Mrs Henderson Presents”, has had four UK #1 Singles and has sold over 3 million albums in the UK. And least we forget he has a much awaited album “Let It Go” out on 29th September on SonyBMG.

The Yeah You’s
When Mike Kintish and Nick Ingram met in 2006 and discovered their mutual love for The Beach Boys and The Police they realised a perfect partnership was in the making. They are now The Yeah You’s, we love them, and soon you’ll see why. Unpretentious and melodic their tracks are not only impossibly catchy but the quality of their musicianship cannot be questioned. This is what pop dreams are made of. Look out for their debut album on Island in 2009.

British Sea Power
Get out your flags and start waving them for the quintessentially English band British Sea Power. Eccentric and whimsical, the third album from this Brighton based group of rocking seafarer’s, Do You Like Rock Music? entered into the UK charts at #9. Featuring pounding church-like drums and chants, the album is both adventurous and accessible and we’re proud to announce at just been shortlisted for this year’s prestigious Mercury Prize. Look out for their anthemic and lyrically witty new single ‘Waving Flags’.

Rob Harris/ Matt Johnson
Rob Harris and Matt Johnson are most famed for writing and performing with Jamiroquai. Their latest venture has been writing with Julian Perretta, a singer-songwriter born in north London, who has already toured with Mark Ronson this year and is currently touring Europe. As Pop Justice puts it, their co-written tracks with Julian are “colourful, amazing and brilliantly melodic piano pop songs such as 'Wonder Why', which has enough of Mika and the Hoosiers in it to ensure that people will pay this young man some attention when he gets around to releasing something in the not too distant future” . The album is due out early 2009 but we thought we would give you a heads up.

Ayak
An incredible sounding singer/songwriter/producer/rapper, Ayak was raised in Sudan and came over as a refugee to London after the start of the civil war in 1984. Finding solace in music, Ayak joined the church choir and penned her first song at age 10. After being involved in the PA’s circuit, Ayak was signed by Polydor in Germany, resulting in a No.1 hit on the German dance chart with “Freaky Girl” . The last few years have seen her collaborate with a number of internationally known artists and DJ’s, including Milk & Sugar and Emmanuel Jay, a fellow hip hop artist from Southern Sudan.

Bless Beats
The producer and co-writer behind Whiley’s “Wearing My Rolex”, Bless Beats hails from the East End of London and is at the forefront of the grime scene. Check out the next single due out on Ministry Of Sound, the very catchy “Rolex Sweep” - for those in the know, you’ve already practised its own unique dance, last seen performed by Chris Martin at a recent Coldplay in the middle of one of their own songs… According to Radio 1, he is the producer to watch right now.

Little Lost David
A unique find from Sheffield, this is a singer songwriter with a lot of heart and a huge musical talent. With a self titled EP produced by the man behind the Artic Monkeys, Alan Smyth, strong reviews from the likes of Q Magazine and amazing word of mouth from his live performances, this is definitely an artist we’re proud to introduce to the mainstream.

The producers behind the garage/dance hits such as “Snowflake” and the Shaznay Lewis colloboration “Daddy-O”, their first successful foray in the music industry resulted in Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Power of Love” and “Two Tribes”.
