Famous American celebrity, Jermaine Jackson Tuesday announced his intention to stage a music concert in The Gambia on May 29th, 2010.
Jermaine, an elder brother of Michael Jackson who is currently in the country with his wife Halima Rashid Jackson made this disclosure yesterday at a press briefing held at the Coco Ozone Hotel in Bijilo. Scheduled to coincide with the 5th Kanilai International Festival, the live concert that will be held at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, according to Jermaine will be a tribute to his late brother Michael Jackson, worlds pop superstar who died last year at age 50.
The concert, he went on, will also be staged as part of celebrations marking the 45th birthday anniversary of the architect of Vision 2020, the president of the Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh on May 25th, 2010. "We are very happy and overjoyed because coming to The Gambia is coming home. We want to have a tribute for my brother Michael Jackson during the 5th Kanilai International Festival. What is going to happen is that I am going to perform and I want all Gambians to know that I am going to bring 40 years of music from the Jackson Family," stated Jermaine Jackson, who converted to the Islamic faith in 1989 after a trip to the Middle East. "I am most honoured to be here during the time of President Jammeh's birthday which we will also celebrate well. So this is going to be a wonderful time and we are going to have a lot of fun, a lot of great music," stated Jermaine.
Having travelled wide and far in Africa, Jermaine told journalists that he felt deeply touched as an African coming to The Gambia, saying it has given him a "sense of being back home." He stated that being in the country is a wonderful feeling given the fact that the country is part of his history. He also declared that he is part of the tribe that was taken away but has been able to come back to inspire and be a partner of the growth of The Gambia.
Explaining that he is also in the country to help President Jammeh in what he is trying to achieve for the country, even though it cannot be possible in a year, Jermaine described the Gambian leader as one whose devotion to Islam has touched him very well. He further described The Gambia as a country with lot of inspirations and determination, hinting that it is blessed with a leader who can lead its people to whatever positive things the citizens wish. Having gone round some parts of the country and visited many schools, Jermaine revealed that they have the Jackson Academy of Performing Arts School, which they hope to construct here with the objective of giving education to Gambians in diverse areas of art and music.
On why the tribute of his late brother in The Gambia, the American celebrity said the tribute is part of his family's legacy, saying "it is very important not to let Michael Jackson's music die, but to continue to honour him". He stated that organisiing a tribute for his late brother, whose untimely death shocked the entire world, "is a way of keeping his legacy alive in a dignified way". Also speaking at the press conference, Alhaji Momodou Sanyang, the director general of the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) who doubles as the chairman of the organising committee of the Kanilai International Festival assured the general public through the media that this year's festival will be with a difference, saying "it is going to be the biggest festival ever."
He said the presence of such a famous world celebrity in the person of Jermaine Jackson at the Kanilai International Festival chairman speaks volumes of the magnitude of the upcoming event that will showcase the cultural diversity of not only The Gambia but beyond.
