Is anyone else bored by current pop music?

I have to admit, I don't listen to a lot of pop/R&B other than Michael Jackson, but just turning on the radio is a chore nowadays. It's not only the music and melodies that are poor, but the lyrics are unintelligent and lack emotion and feeling. For the life of me, I can't understand why these people made it in the industry, when they can't write music and the songwriters who write the music for them are so talentless.

Even Madonna, who had some good songs in the 80s, is now churning out crap. Just by hearing the leaked tracks, I won't be buying her album. Same with Mariah, who I've always thought was overrated, and her new songs just plain suck.

If this is the future of pop music, it's really depressing to think about. Hopefully Michael will release something soon, and show the world what real music sounds like.

nope, tired by these corperate pimps pushing the same thing down our throat daily and just making ringtones.

im horribly bored with music today in general
i never listen to the radio and occasionally watch television now.
i just think music and tv have declined so much in quality
it just seems like it's cover after cover or sample after sample for music or with the same hip hop beats that are dominating the airwaves
and for television it's just the same ideas being churned out all the time or just ridiculous reality or dating shows.

urban pop is circumstantial nowadays.. all about business, rather than about some sort of emotional or spiritual quest. there's some that's good, but that falls in the category of an exception. the industry needs to look back at who came before them and stop the embarrassment they call music.

there's too much talent that isn't exploited - all i'll say is thank f*** for the internet.

Well Mike is using some of these same people, so will he sound like them? I haven't really listened to the radio on purpose since 1990 or so. Or if I do, I listen to the oldies or light rock station, lol. I only hear "popular" stuff at work where someone has the radio on. The problem is that in the old days, the record business was run by former musicians or music lovers. Now, it's just guys who took business in college and don't care about music, just profits for the stockholders. That's why Prince or Sananda Maitreya (Terence Trent D'arby) don't really deal with label contracts anymore. Most artists don't make money from records anyway but from touring. Now the labels are trying to take performers touring profits because sales are down. The Eagles put out their recent CD out themselves (and not with a major label) and sold it only through Wal Mart. I'm not sure how anything MJ will put out is going to fare. Radio tends to not be receptive to people over a certain age, at least in the USA. Lots of people go see the Rolling Stones, but no one plays their recent material on the radio.

did he sound like your average Teddy Riley? nope. not even your average Jerkins. will.i.am, Akon, Ne-Yo et al, all bear circumstantial music - no doubt talented but i'm sure their creativity is limited by the big wigs. this is evident if you compare will.i.am's material on small labels vs. current label. Mike merely uses them as tools and no doubt has greater authority over his own material and releases.

i agree.

I don't know about Darkchild. You Rock My World sounds just like the stuff he did for Toni Braxton, so it wasn't particularly different. I don't know who Ne-Yo is, and I don't like Akon's voice.

i'm aware of two tracks he did for Toni and neither resemble You Rock My World.. ?

YRMW was an exception when it comes to Jerkins - he's usually more into the brokenbeat-techno-electro-funk weird ish like he did on his stand-out Brandy album (and all his remixes), but the rest of the tracks he co-produced are distinctly different and i can hear where Michael wanted to try something digitally new and unique with the sounds (although IMO failed at making it sound good).

Well, I like a song here and there, but yeah, I'm pretty bored by most of it...

I have to say though, that MJ put the bar so high that it must be tough on today's artists to come up with something new and decent. Maybe that's why we see so many 'copiers'...

Nah, I'm good ... The NewKids are on their way back. Danny will fill in nicely for Michael, until dude decides to release something.

I don't know about all new music out now, but yes, some mainstream stuff does sound the same. Like every rap song this year was the same... "I'm at the club blah blah blah"

I'll be honest though, if it has a catchy beat, I'll listen to the song. It's just all the music seems recycled to me.

they're there but don't get the chance to be noticed.

the Michael formula seems to work only for Michael; it's time for major labels to take risks with new unique and creative ventures that have been there since the 'decline' of great mainstream music.

Hmm, dunno; I think if there was someone out there that could present something as effectively as MJ, we would have heard of it by now...

These days, I would think news of a really hot artist would be spread like wildfire through the internet, no?

Michael didn't start out as the phenomena he is now known to be. all these labels need to do is give real talent a chance to be as creative as they want and grow into their potential - they're not taking that risk.

depending on what you mean by "hot", there are so many of them with immense talent and creativity that outshines our current pop stars and most don't even have record deals.

I would say that MJ did start out as a phenomenon, and grew into an even bigger one...

I'm not saying that there isn't any talent out there besides current pop performers, it's just that major talent tends to rise to the top eventually.

Yes, there are surely some very talented peeps that may not have record deals, but if there was one that had the talent that MJ has, we would know about it.

for sure, i didn't say otherwise - but you wouldn't look at any child/teenager and foresee such a prospect as Michael turned out to be. of course he's a very special case and each talent is an individual. e.g. you wouldn't think this 13 year old would make it big (and deservedly so) by viewing her mediocre (and out of pitch) performance here

yes, when given the chance and niche to grow in. and i'm not saying we have a Michael-esque talent that has been lying dormant somewhere, either. but there is a lot of authentic talent and creativity around which hasn't been exploited and you don't know where any of them could lead when given the right connections/grooming to fully utilise their talents.

Nobody has the talent Michael does, that goes for past and present. But the difference between the industry today and the industry of yesterday is that, while there's always been fluff, it used to be the talent that got the awards, got the air time and TV time and dominated the charts, while today it's the fluff that gets all that. Michael inadvertantly messed the industry up by being so talented though, because he had and has world class talent in so many areas, and after he came along, I think the industry felt that in order to compete, being really, really good at just one thing wasn't good enough anymore, and so they started making jacks-of-all trades, masters of none pop stars, stars that do a little of everything but aren't really exceptional at anything. The industry has attempted to make Michael's kind of talent seem common. Today's youth doesn't understand the difference between someone like Michael and Chris Brown or Usher. They don't get it. Because the industry has brain washed them in to thinking that everone can sing and dance. They don't understand that there's never been a talent like Michael before or since and there probably never will be again. Michael doesn't just "sing and dance", he's considered one of the greatest singers ever in history and one of the greatest dancers ever in history, all at the same time, and that's NEVER happened before. The industry knew that they couldn't find anyone like Michael, but they still had to compete, and Michael changed the landscape totally single handedly because of what he had to offer, he wasn't just a brilliant singer, he was a brilliant dancer and songwriter and performer. So now we've got a bunch of average singers, average dancers, average songwriters, average performers, nothing exceptional, because you just don't find someone with world class talent in that many areas. Michael's a total phenom and a freak, basically. The industry needs to stop trying to create another Michael Jackson by assembling paper singer/dancers and just concentrate on people who are truly talented in their respective area(s), like they used to do. Because they're never going to create another MJ, there's only one.

that's what i'm talking about when i said the 'Michael formula'. they need to divert from that and allow a more unique base in - and there is a roaster of unique artists/producers/writers around. it's all the businessman's fault here.

Today's youth doesn't understand the difference bewteen someone like Michael and Chris Brown or Usher. They don't get it.
gross generalisation probably based on a few YouTube comments by devoted fans of these young artists or something along the same line. i wouldn't diss the knowledge of and appreciation from young music fans in this way.

well it can't be based on anything substantial to generally assert that our youth cannot recognise Michael's influence.

I didn't say they don't recongnize his influence, I said they don't really understand what makes him different from the Usher's and Chris Brown's of today.

by recognising Michael's influence on his wannabes, that's not only telling him apart from them but also acknowledging his own genius.

whatever you meant, it's a very bad generalisation lol

ur killin' me :rollin:

well theres not many pop artists around today to begin with so yeah...
todays music industry is all about r&b and hip hop/rap
the pop music today is not much hyped anymore and the todays pop artists dont get much publicity. even some original pop artists like janet, madonna even britney have taken the r&b turn

Also back in the old days people were excited about music because there was no competition. No computers, video games, cable, VCR, DVD, etc. There was only 4 networks (PBS, NBC, ABC, CBS) and maybe 1 or 2 local channels on UHF. TV would go off around midnight.

*applauding* YES! I agree with this 100%!!!!

I'm all for uniqueness, but when it comes to the current pop artists, WBSS21 said it perfectly for me.

Yeah--times are not like they were decades ago. It's really easy to 'get noticed' these days--even if you don't have talent, unfortunately. The internet, as well as the fact that virtually any clown can get on television, has made getting "noticed" a non-issue.

We just need the "talent" part of the equation. :)

Um, I thought she was really very good there. lol I mean you can tell she's nervous, but I can hear the talent immediately. And I'm afraid that of you're posting this vid for argument as an example of a mediocre performance, well, what can I say. Surely not her greatest, but still, obvious to me she has talent. If you could not have predicted this woman's success, then how can anyone, including record exec.s?

I will say this; exec.'s probably go the route with the least risk involved. And I guess that's to be expected. Who is willing to invest in high risk ventures? Not many of us.

Uh--then again not everyone is singing in a family band when they are 5 years old with their father whipping their a**es for them to get it right or else.

You don't have to have been Michael Jackson when you were five years old to turn out a great vocalist. Not by any means.

...And too bad those clowns who were booing Lauryn Hill @ the Apollo had no clue what a superstar she'd turn out to be someday ( & I'm sure some of those same people bought her & the fugees's albums later on) .

Who's laughing now? :)
