Final 2009 albums sales update

ok mag and the express paper are owned by the same people

I knew the press would not acknowledge MJs massive sales this year, but to lie about it is disgusting... but that is nothing new is it. You know, even an Indian paper has the same story. And they wonder why MJ fans think the press has a vendetta against MJ.

Sony's press office or whoever does this sort of thing could have released stories about MJs sales to the press but looks like they haven't. Press probably wouldn't have printed it anyway..

what are her and mjs figures for the usa anyway. even if she did outsell him its pretty irrelelvent and not the issue. its the obvious motives these assholes have when writing these stories.

Well you guys have to remember that she just outsold number ones.

OVERALL MJ sold more records in the US last year.

Thats right, but I cant find a single article mentioning Michael as tze best selling artist of the year, or at least that Michael sold most albums in 2009!
No mentioning about the 25 mil. albums, just a chart success, even Billboard hasnt released any article as for MJs success..., no numbers, thats why its absolutely important to upgrade WIKIpedia!!!

She didn't outsell him, she outsold one of his albums. They picked the figure for MJ's 'Number Ones' album which sold 2,400,000 and compared her to that to claim she was 'bigger' than him and outsold him in the US.. they completely ignored the sales of MJs other albums - he sold 9,000,000 albums in the US making him the biggest selling act this year there and in the UK, Europe, Japan and Globally. So she clearly is not 'bigger' than Michael Jackson.

*Jackson Sells 24,800,000 albums in 2009 including Jackson 5 material, Motown, and Sony albums.

*Sony shipped 30,000,000 albums in 2009 while Motown shipped 1,500,000

*Jackson sold 9,000,000 albums in the US which makes him the best selling act this year.

*Jackson was the biggest selling musical act in the US, UK, Europe, Japan, and Globally.

*MJ's Global sales were huge and outpaced the nearest competition by over double. (#2 were The Beatles who sold 11 million albums this year vs Jackson's 24.8 million).

Of course, but explain that the morons who write those articles.
Or better, add comments on the articles!!!!
Simply, they do it consciously.

and so she should have. a new reality star on the block with a new album compared to a g.hits album from 2003. media are obsessed with s***ing on mj even now. scum.

Exactly. I love the whole Susan Boyle story. And hope she immediately gets an attorney to get her current disgraceful royalty figure way up. But in 5 years, it'll be Susan Boyle who? Hope not, but chances are that will be the case.

Michael has a 40+ year career and the fact that he can sell 2.4 million albums with songs that many have had for 20 years should be headlining every music site.

It's just another example of press disrepect and a way to minimize his accomplishments.

The big story is that he sold nearly 25 million albums in 6 months. No ONE has done that ever! John Lennon, Presley, NO ONE!

So gerryevans, all MJ fans should comment these ridiculous articles.

Thats the only way what MJ fans can do - massively ... providing just facts and factual numbers!

The notion that any act is bigger than Mike is a fail on arrival imo.

Will these numbers ever be counted by Sony and Universal and certified by the RIAA? When will Bad be recertified???

I'm sure the Beatles certifcation are already done!

Well, Sony and Estate are more concerned with the leaked seconds of a raw demo. :bugeyed

I can bet the Beatles certifications are done.

just a question

Susan Boyle sold 6 millions in USA alone or worldwide?

I am a little annoyed that the media has to hype up this Susan Boyle woman. -_-

Who on earth really thinks that this woman is BIGGER than Mike?

No, seriously...

Half the world don't even know who she is...

Top SoundScan's Year-End Charts - USA only

Well, the final numbers have been crunched and the end result is something we pretty much suspected all along: 2009 was a very big year for Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and the late, great King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

On Wednesday (January 6), Nielsen SoundScan released their sales figures for 2009, and while some of the data is downright depressing — total album sales (including digital) dropped more than 12 percent — we prefer to focus on the positive: Swift, Gaga and Jackson (not to mention Susan Boyle, the Black Eyed Peas and the Kings of Leon) moved a whole lot of units over the past 12 months.

Swift's Fearless was the year's top-selling album, moving more than 3.2 million copies, holding off a late-year charge from Boyle, whose I Dreamed a Dream sold some 3.1 million copies to land at #2 (though Boyle had the best-selling album released in 2009, since Fearless actually came out in November 2008). Michael Jackson's Number Ones was #3, selling more than 2.3 million copies, and Lady Gaga's The Fame (2.23 million) and Andrea Bocelli's My Christmas (2.2 million) round out the top five.

Jackson was 2009's top-selling artist by a mile. He sold more than 8.2 million albums, doubling his nearest competitor, Swift, who sold 4.6 million. Some group called the Beatles landed at #3, selling more than 3.2 million albums, followed by Boyle (3.1 million) and Gaga (2.8 million).

Gaga was named the top-selling digital artist of the year — a category based on total digital track sales — as fans downloaded more than 15 million of her songs. The Black Eyed Peas were next, selling nearly 13 million digital tracks. Jackson stood at #3 (12.35 million), Swift came in at #4 (12.3 million) with Beyoncé at #5.

The Peas held the top two spots on the top-selling digital songs list with "Boom Boom Pow" (4.7 million downloads) and "I Gotta Feeling" (4.4 million), followed by Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" (4.3 million), Flo Rida's "Right Round" (4.1 million) and Gaga's "Just Dance" (3.2 million).

The Nielsen SoundScan numbers were based on the 52-week period of January 5, 2009 -- January 3, 2010.

Ok. Let me also be the voice of reason. (please don't throw things at me.....)

Here is something that was explained to me that makes perfect sense if you all let this sink into your heads for a moment.

Susan Boyle is an older female singing 'older' style classics and appeals to an audience that would actually BUY the album or CD. The same goes for the Beatles. The older crowd actually goes to the store and purchases this.

Now....many fans of younger music use FREE downloads (piracy) and this hurts album sales. Yes...this is true. That is ONE reason for the discrepancy. Another reason for the discrepancy is that most of these albums have been around for a number of years (Michaels) and have already been purchased. I, myself purchased this year (2009), This Is It, Number Ones, and The Essential Michael Jackson (Why....I don't even know....they are not new songs) I purchased other albums too but not his.

Now, I also download songs (piracy) and never buy certain albums. So, you have to figure there are some people who have no clue how to do that. They would buy the album. MJ fans are internet savvy.
