Headlines: Encores! Plans Summer Run of The Wiz

566213.JPG
Thomas KailThe Encores! series at New York City Center will present a three-week run of The Wiz in summer 2009. The revival will be directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, who collaborated on the hit Broadway musical In the Heights, and is set to run June 12-July 3. Opening night will be June 18. No casting has been announced.

A modern-day retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with an African-American cast, The Wiz features a book by William F. Brown and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls. The show originally opened on Broadway on January 5, 1975, starring Stephanie Mills, Hinton Battle, Tiger Haynes, Ted Ross, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Andre De Shields. An immediate hit, The Wiz ran on Broadway for four years and won seven 1975 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. A movie version starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell and Tony winner Ross was released in 1978. The Wiz is the third show to be presented for an extended summer run by Encores!, following Gypsy (2007) and Damn Yankees (2008).

Mentionings:

Kanye West Bashes Thom Yorke, Defends Chris Brown...
And on Michael Jackson and Michael Phelps, the latter of whom probably isn't thrilled at being included in this company: "Michael Jackson, amazing. Michael Phelps, amazing ... He's a real fuckin' person; he makes mistakes."

Incredible. According to Reuters, VH1 has actually left that second rant relatively intact, even if the network has "cleaned up those comments a bit."...

Wherever he goes, he draws plenty of attention. And when Michael Jackson decided to do some shopping on Rodeo Drive last night, there were plenty of paparazzi waiting for him.
The “Beat It” singer was joined by uber-hip designer Christian Audigier as he made his rounds at the Dior and Dolce & Gabbana stores.

Jackson plans to bid farewell to Neverland treasure...in Kildare

Irish fans are in for a real 'thriller' -- controversial superstar Michael Jackson may be jetting in to bid a final goodbye to his Neverland memorabilia.
Newbridge Silverware scored a major coup after its Kildare showrooms were chosen as the first place in the world to exhibit some 2,500 items -- estimated to be worth at least €3m -- before they go for auction in LA.
Now a company source has confirmed to the Herald that they are in negotiations with Jackson's representatives about the possibility of him coming here to give his best-loved items one last send off.
"It's very likely that he will come over here," she said. "He loves Ireland and spent a lot of time here when he was going through a difficult time in his life, so has fond memories of the place.
"But because of the media circus that always surrounds him when he goes anywhere, he'll probably slip into the country discreetly and see the exhibition privately without tipping anyone off in advance.
"We're trying to get something definite out of his people but the truth is we just don't know yet."
She added that the company has been "absolutely inundated" with queries about the exhibition from media outlets and fans all over the world.

history
"This is the biggest thing we have ever done in terms of exhibitions. We have had calls from everyone from the Today Show in the US to Hollywood Tonight.
"They're all getting on flights over here next week for the press preview on Thursday. The phone has just been ringing off the hook," she continued.
"The whole collection is estimated to be worth around €3m, but once you factor in the whole 'Jackson factor', it could go for a lot more. These are such important pieces in his history. We have everything from the first contract he signed with the Jackson Five down to memorabilia from his last tour and major TV appearances."
A ring of security is now being erected around the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons, given that the massive cache of memorabilia is arriving next Tuesday.
The world-famous star turned his back on the sprawling estate after he was acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005 as he said his California home felt "violated" after police searches.
The stash includes his Neverland furniture, his lavish stage costumes including the jacket he wore on his Dangerous tour, his impressive art collection and even some of his private correspondence.

Kris who?
Prior to Wednesday night's show, Kris Allen had flown mostly under the "American Idol" radar. But the 23-year-old made a big impression with his cover of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror," grabbing a seat in the top 12 (alongside Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta) over some early scene-stealers.

Michael Jackson HIStory for Feb 28, 2009:

1984 - Michael Jackson won a record eight Grammy awards connected to the album "Thriller."

1996 - The video for "Scream" was named Best Video, Short Form at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards.

2004 - In Colorado, Michael Jackson shopped at Wal-Mart while wearing a ski mask. An employee called police to report someone shopping in a ski mask causing Jackson to be stopped by police a short time later. "There were no problems, and that was it" after Jackson identified himself.

2005 - In Santa Maria, CA, opening statements began in Michael Jackson's child molestation trial

Missed one...

Mark Ronson Says Michael Jackson Hates Porn

Mark Ronson is apparently one of these boys who spent some time hanging out with Michael Jackson when he was growing up, and so was Sean Lennon.
He told C4's 'Sunday Night Project' that he's not traumatised by it, and also, that Michael Jackson doesn't like porn.

Ronson says: "Me and Sean said 'Michael do you want to see something cool?' We turned the dial to the porn channel and there were strippers shaking their (deleted) around. We were like, 'Michael, Michael how cool is this?' We turned around and he was cringing saying, 'Ooh stop it, stop it, ooh it's so silly'. He was not down with the program whatsoever. I think he just had really strong feminist views on porn and the use of it".

****
Personally, I think Michael Jackson is first and foremost a gentleman. And Gentlemen are not into porn!

Re: Feb 27 - Mar 1: Michael Jackson going to Ireland? {Updated for Feb 28 on post #24}

I wouldn't think Michael would be going to Ireland. He doesn't care enough to keep the items hence the auction why follow em around? Odd, but I guess I've seen odder things
