Friday 13th at London Bridge Station: zombies, police and snappers

'Zombies' were outnumbered by photographers and police at a flashmob at London Bridge Station on Friday night organised to promote the London Bridge Festival.

google_ad_client = "pub-7153852846749135";google_alternate_ad_url = "http://www.london-se1.co.uk/advertising/google_adsense_script.html";google_ad_width = 468;google_ad_height = 60;google_ad_format = "468x60_as";google_ad_type = "text_image";//2006-09-23: news-below-leadgoogle_ad_channel ="3668929877";google_color_border = "FFFFFF";google_color_bg = "FFFFFF";google_color_link = "9E0028";google_color_url = "9E0028";google_color_text = "000000";window.google_render_ad();
The plan was that 'zombies' should turn up on the main concourse at the station with Michael Jackson's Thriller on their music players.
On the stroke of 7pm they were to break into a zombie dance for exactly three minutes.
The British Transport Police weren't taking any chances with the event after last week's flashmob at Liverpool Street led to the temporary closure of that station.
There was a heavy police presence and would-be zombies were redirected to the bus station outside the concourse where there was no visible clock for participants to coordinate their actions.
Earlier the organisers had pulled the plug on a Facebook event listing for the flashmob in a bid to keep numbers down after British Transport Police and Network Rail expressed concern about the stunt.
Organiser Greg Tallent – a lecturer at London South Bank Universityadmitted on Twitter that the event "didn't quite work as expected" but added: "We did have fun, though."
The main London Bridge Festival – an open-access arts festival – takes place from 10 to 25 July. Full details at www.londonbridgefestival.com

J. Holiday’s Valentine’s Day Playlist

j-holiday-red.jpg
Candles? Check. Roses? Got ’em. Champagne (or sparkling cider for the junior macks)? Chillin’ in the fridge. The only thing missing now is that perfect playlist to spark up some romance on Valentine’s Day. But J. Holiday has you covered.
A strict student of the old school, the R&B singer who put you to “Bed” suggests sticking to the subtle stylings of soul legends. R. Kelly and Pretty Ricky do have a way of heating things up, but we’re opting for a sweeter, more refined soundtrack. J. Holiday gives us a little commentary on his picks, proving that this Valentine’s Day, class reigns over crass.

“If This World Were Mine” – Luther Vandross feat. Cheryl Lynn
“You gotta play this at slow dance time after dinner. You might be at a nice little lounge where you can dance if you want to. You could ask the DJ to play this song and then you take her to the dance floor.”
“Sexual Healing (Instrumental)” – Marvin Gaye
“For some background music during dinner, it can just be some mood music; someone on the piano playing something nice. This is definitely a classic.”
“My Heart Belongs to U” - Jodeci
“When it comes to the after-hours, I would play Jodeci. I’ve been listening to Diary of a Mad Band a lot lately. So it would probably be that album playing real soft in the background.”
“Run Into My Arms” – J. Holiday (off Round 2)
“I never play any of my own music in the bedroom, but I would definitely suggest that other guys do. It’s basically telling a female, ‘I know you’ve got trust issues but if you’re looking for that knight in shining armor, you have to be open.’”
Rock With You” – Michael Jackson
“When it comes to rockin’ to something on the dance floor, something more upbeat, you get into the Michael Jackson. Either ‘Rock With You’ or ‘P.Y.T.’”

J. Holiday will release his sophomore album Round 2 on March 10 featuring the single “It’s Yours.”

In “Black Borders,” he said, he focused on artists. The writers Amiri Baraka and James Baldwin, the boxer Marvin Hagler (“I consider athletes artists, too,” Mr. Barboza said), the actors Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, and a teenage Michael Jackson all came to his New York studio. “I lit and painted the backgrounds according to how I felt about the person,” he said.

THE PULSE OF ENTERTAINMENT: Norman Connors is back with 'Star Power'

*The man that brought “Quiet Storm” and “You are my Starship” to the airwaves, Norman Connors, is back with a powerful album release on his “indie” label Star Ship Records in partnership with Shanachie Entertainment. The CD titled “Star Power” features the vocals of Peabo Bryson, Howard Hewitt and Christopher Williams, and musician help from Bobby Lyle and Ray Parker, Jr.

Grammy Award winning Peabo sings one of Norman’s classic songs, “You are my Starship,” like only Peabo can sing it. Guitarist Ray Parker Jr. makes his instrument sing Michael Jackson’s 1979 hit, “Rock with You.”

*This ought to be a real nice CD. Also, Norman's Valentine Love, is like THE song to spin for 2-14. :)
That one and STARSHIP remain a fave of mine to this day.

*I think it's cool that MJ's trademark and iconic wardrobe will be displayed
at this Grammy museum.

As always, thank you Marie. :)

Michael Jackson News for Feb 15, 2009:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/feb/15/michael-jackson-neverland

It's the sale of the century

The contents of Neverland are officially up for auction. Chris Campion enjoys a world exclusive preview
Portrait-of-Michael-Jacks-001.jpg
Portrait of Michael Jackson dressed as a King, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1995. Housed in an elaborate gold frame. Norman Oak (American, B. 20th Century) Guide price: $4,000 - $6,000. Photograph: Shaan Kokin/Julien's Auctions

In April, an extraordinary auction will provide an unprecedented look into the private world of Michael Jackson. More than 2,000 items, ranging from personal effects and costumes to pieces from Jackson's private art collection as well as fittings and furnishings from his Neverland ranch, will be up for sale at a four-day public auction at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.
Given the continuing fascination that the self-styled King of Pop exerts over the public imagination, Darren Julien, the affable Los Angeles-based auctioneer of celebrity merchandise who is directing the sale, expects a media circus to descend on the hotel as well as tribes of devoted Jackson fans from all corners of the globe. Select lots are to be sent on a touring exhibition that will arrive in Dublin and London in March before a full-scale exhibition opens for one week in Beverly Hills prior to the sale.
The idea, Julien says, is to create the kind of spectacle with which Michael Jackson has been so often associated throughout his career. This is the first sale that the superstar has sanctioned of his property. Michael took legal action in 2007 to try, unsuccessfully, to halt an auction held in Las Vegas of Jackson family items that had been acquired by New Jersey businessman Henry Vaccaro.
This new auction seems to mark Jackson's severance from Neverland, his Xanadu and a symbol of his success as well as his largesse. The ranch opened as a private amusement park in 1988, with its own zoo and Ferris wheel, roller coaster and bumper cars. It was named after Peter Pan's fantasy island where children never grow up, and for years children would arrive by the busload, invited to play freely in its grounds. But following the 2005 child molestation trial - which saw Jackson acquitted of all charges - the singer never returned to the 2,800-acre property in the Santa Ynez Valley, 130 miles west of Los Angeles. There were stories of him pitching up in Dubai, Dublin and Las Vegas before he started renting a seven-bedroom mansion in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, earlier this year. The 50-year-old star was said to be defaulting on payments on vast loans, and while he is thought to retain an interest in Neverland through his involvement with a private investment company, Colony Capital, he has said that the police investigation of the premises "violated" it in his eyes.
Before it was recently renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch, and at Jackson's request, Darren Julien and his team were brought in to scrutinise the ranch. What they found inside was the most astonishing collection of objects these experienced auctioneers said they had ever seen in a celebrity home. "It seemed as if everything he owned was made of bronze and marble and gold," says Michael Doyle, who catalogued the sale items, as well as determining their value.
Jackson surrounded himself with regal finery. There were suits of armour, display cases of custom-made crowns and an ornately carved throne with red velvet upholstering in his bedroom. "King Michael" even had a royal cape, a Father's Day present inscribed inside with a message from his children "Princess Paris" and "Prince Michael". In the lobby of the house was a commissioned portrait of Jackson as a young man in Elizabethan dress, holding a crown on a velvet pillow. Julien and his team spent almost two months at Neverland last summer, meticulously cataloguing 2,000 items, which will be sorted into 1,500 lots. Cranes and forklifts were brought in to dismantle the fairground rides and move the ornate bronze sculptures scattered across 38 acres of the estate.
In a nondescript warehouse on the outskirts of Los Angeles, the famed gates of the Neverland ranch now sit against a wall. The interior of the warehouse is littered with the ornaments that once decorated the grounds. There are bronze statues of frolicking cherubs, replica marble busts of Roman emperors, a huge statue of Prometheus that used to sit on a skull near the entrance. On shelves there are child-size diesel-powered race cars that used to zoom around the grounds. There is a Pope-mobile-style electric buggy fitted with tinted windows and stereo system. Another buggy has the King of Pop's face painted on its bonnet.
The sale also includes vintage video game machines, as well as Jackson's collection of 18th- and 19th-century art. There are books about Disney, the Three Stooges, Peter Pan and Alfred Hitchcock, as well as a collection of black history books, including the autobiography of Malcolm X. Then there is a selection of his own stage costumes, dating back from the days of the Jackson 5 through to the present. There is one of the fedoras he wore in the video for Billie Jean; a pair of trousers so studded with diamanté that they feel as heavy as chain mail; there are customised military jackets, featuring insignia surely acquired on his global travels - including badges from the Royal Air Force and the Thai Narcotics Bureau.
While the lots are "priced as if you and I had owned them, not as if they were owned by Michael Jackson", according to Martin J Nowlan, the Irish co-owner of Julien's Auctions, this is "certainly not a fire sale" of Jackson's belongings - there is, he says, much more to the singer's hoardings. But it would seem to have a personal significance, perhaps symbolising the point at which Jackson himself feels finally able to divest himself of much that conspired to tarnish his career in order to begin anew.

Music Review: The Jacksons - Destiny

Long before he was the center of many various controversies, Michael Jackson led his group of brothers through what essentially served as a foundation for his early solo career. Released less than a year before Michael's 1979 adult break-through, Off the Wall, The Jacksons reached a new level of success with Destiny. Arriving almost in time to celebrate its 30th anniversary, Epic/Legacy has reissued the album on CD featuring sterling remastered audio.
An RIAA-certified platinum album, Destiny holds up today as a fresh and danceable collection of tunes that showcases the natural brilliance of Michael Jackson. Jermaine Jackson had left the group by this point to pursue his solo career. Tito, Jackie, Marlon, and Randy don't contribute as frequently to the vocals as Micheal, but their presence as harmony singers remains strong. Michael contributes the lion's share of lead vocals here, which makes this release a must-have for his fans. It really is refreshing to look back on an era when Jackson's name was synonymous with music rather than tabloid headlines.
Highlights include the only non-original track, "Blame It On the Boogie," which was a significant R&B hit. Interestingly, the songwriting credits for the track include two different Jacksons, neither of which are any relation to the group. The tightest groove (and biggest hit) is "Shake Your Body (Down To the Ground)." This is an electrifying dance track, easily earning its place on numerous best-of compilations. The title track, a country-tinged soul ballad, is another favorite. The acoustic guitar work provides a nice change of pace from the rest of the album. "Push Me Away" is a tender slow jam, beautifully sung by Michael. The ensemble vocals on "Bless His Soul" are a prime reminder of how potent The Jacksons were.
There are two bonus tracks included on this reissue, neither of which is particularly revelatory. Even so, these dance mixes of the two best known tracks, "Blame It On the Boogie" and "Shake Your Body (Down To the Ground)," are nice to have for collectors and completists. I wouldn't say that either of them improves upon the original, but they provide nice alternate versions. The remastered sound throughout ensures that this album sounds right at home in 2009, with buoyant bass lines popping from the speakers. New liner notes allow for a closer look at Destiny, an under-appreciated classic of '70s R&B.

Is he just a little bit lazy? “I think lazy isn’t too far off,” he said. Even so, Ward is not out of step; contemporary indie music has caught up to his brand of revivalism. And he’s more diverse than he lets on: He likes the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall and grew up, near Los Angeles, on KROQ, then home to British new wave and acts like Sonic Youth and Firehose from the punk label SST.

MILEY CYRUS - Fly On The Wall ***
This is like Britney's Piece Of Me and the video is similiar to Michael Jackson's Thriller. It's an angry, rockier song, which could see her career going down an Avril Lavigne route but it might be too heavy for some of the Hannah Montana actress's younger fans. AC

NEW YORK -- In such hard economic times, Broadway is banking on high-profile Hollywood names to bring in the crowds.
Katie Holmes got the ball rolling last fall when she took to the stage in All My Sons. The play was a big hit, as much with the critics as at the box office. Every day the paparazzi followed Mrs. Cruise on the way to the theatre.
The show couldn't have asked for a better media blitz. She has reportedly been offered a role in the musical adaptation of Finding Neverland, set to run later this year. There is also a rumour Jennifer Lopez recently had a sit-down with the producers of In the Heights.
Among the most highly anticipated shows coming up are the adaptation of Michael Jackson's Thriller and Spider-Man, the latter with music from U2's Bono and The Edge.

Next we got a view of dappled sun on snowy peaks sort northeast from Santa Ynez Valley near Painted Cave. Then on the way to Oceano we snapped Michael Jackson's Neverland again. First time we've seen the fountains on for quite a while, and also the best view of the mansion area since the trees are bare. I've put more pix of Neverland on my Photo Page too. Despite the breathtaking views around Oceano and a great meal at Mama's Meatballs by the beack, we stopped snapping.

Michael Jackson HIStory for Feb 15, 2009:

1992 - The Ivory Coast village of Krinjabo named Michael Jackson "King of the Sanwis."

1993 - The U.S. District Court in Denver, CO, ruled that Michael Jackson did not steal the song "Dangerous" from songwriter Crystal Cartier.

2005 - Michael Jackson was admitted to Marian Medical Center with flu-like symptoms. As a result, the judge in his child molestation case delayed the jury selection process until February 22.

Jacksons star in Nigeria resort row

Visitors can contemplate the horror of slavery from their luxury rooms

One of pop superstar Michael Jackson's brothers, Marlon, is involved in a controversial plan to develop a $3.4bn (£2.4bn) slavery memorial and luxury resort in Badagry, Nigeria.
The historic slave port is to be transformed through the bizarre combination of a slave history theme park and a museum dedicated to double Grammy-winning pop-soul group the Jackson Five.
The idea is that the band will help attract African-American tourists keen to trace their roots back to Nigeria.
The men behind the plan say it will honour the history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and provide employment opportunities for Nigerians.
But the plan has been condemned by Nigerian commentators.
Slave tourism
The African-American history trail is worth billions of dollars, the developers say.
Ghana and Senegal have successfully turned slave ports into tourist attractions.
_45425450_badagry_jacksons_ap_226.jpg
The Jackson Five got discos moving in the 1970s and the 1980s

The developers say the Badagry Historical Resort will be marketed to African-American tourists as a mixture of luxury tourist attractions and historical education.
Visitors will be able to see the route their ancestors walked, shackled together as they were whipped toward the "point of no-return".
They can then retire to their five-star hotel to drink cocktails by the pool.
Visitors will be able to pay their respects at the site of a mass grave for those who died before boarding ships across the Atlantic Ocean.
And then travel a few yards in a buggy to play a round of golf.
They can visit a replica slave ship to see the conditions Africans suffered, before visiting the world's only museum dedicated to the memory of the Jackson Five.
Academics believe around 10m people died during the trans-Atlantic slave trade between 1600 and 1900.
The Jackson's upbeat tunes like ABC and Blame it on the Boogie enlivened US and UK discos throughout the 1980s.
On display at the museum will be animatronic vignettes of the band, memorabilia and "holographic displays" of the group that launched the career of Michael Jackson, after their split in 1989.
'The right place'
"The Badagry Historical Resort development project will certainly enhance the quality of life for millions of people across Nigeria," promotional material for the resort says.

But critics have dismissed the project as a cynical money-making scheme, inappropriate for the subject of such seriousness as the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
The idea to bring together slavery and the Jackson Five came during a visit to Nigeria by US businessmen and former Jacksons singer Marlon Jackson.
"The Jackson Family had been looking for a place to site their memorabilia collection for some time," Gary Loster, a former mayor of Saginaw, Michigan and CEO of The Motherland Group says.
"We visited the site of the slave port in Badagry and Marlon turned to me and said: 'Let's put it here, this is right'".
"It's such an emotional place, and I think we all felt that it was the right place to have the Jackson family memorial."
Money
But respected writer and historian Toyin Falola has condemned the project.
"It is not appropriate from a cultural or historical point of view, those who are looking for money care about money and no other thing," he said.

THE SLAVE TRADE
_45426770_badagry_slaves_getty_226.jpg

Trans-Atlantic slave trade ran between 1650 and 1900
About 10.2m slaves arrived in America from Africa
35% came from the Niger River area
10-20% died on the journey
An estimated 4.5% died in slave ports like Badagry

Source: slavevoyages.org
The professor of history at the University of Texas and author of many books on the Nigerian diaspora and African-American history, said the development was exploiting painful history.
"Money-making and historical memory are allies in the extension of capitalism. You cry with one eye and wipe it off with cold beer, leaving the other eye open for gambling," he said.
Writer, columnist and PR consultant C Don Adinuba said if the resort was being built by a company run by a white person, there would be uproar.
"This plan is morally reprehensible, it's like dancing on the graves of dead people and telling them you're honouring them."
The developers say they will treat the slave memorial with sensitivity.
They hope it will become a "historical destination" similar to the Holocaust museum in Berlin.
The luxury hotels near the site will provide jobs and development to the local economy, they say.
'Aggressive'
The developers, who include the creator of the hit TV series Power Rangers, have ambitious plans for the resort.
The Motherland Group says their resort alone will pull in 1.4m visitors in the first year alone, rising to 4.4m in five years.
_45476674_nigeria_badagry_226.gif

But that would represent an incredible increase.
Mr Loster says they will have to work with the government to change some of the bureaucratic restrictions on tourists if their project is to attract the numbers it needs.
Currently fewer than 300,000 tourists visit Nigeria in a year, they say.
It is impossible to get a visa without a letter of invitation.
Flights to Nigeria are expensive, and there is little tourist infrastructure to cater for European or American consumers when they get there.
And then there is the country's reputation as a chaotic and violent place. Mr Loster admits their projected figures are "aggressive". "We know the problems facing us, we have visited Nigeria several times," he said.

La Toya was talking on tv yesterday. They were showing the notorious hand-pics asking a "hand-expert" and they asked La Toya about Michael's health. The answers were he is fine and since he lives in LA they see each other more often. He is not allowed to devulge details about his future plans... It was nice to see her, even though I would want them to ask La Toya about her business and not Michael's.

on german tv? also the hand pics presuming its the ones from arnie kliens that looks like his hand his huge. u can see the original pics on one of the fans sites and u can see how the pics in the papers have been altered
