Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - General Discussion Thread

the "I will watch it no matter the quality" thing is puzzling me... We saw many pro shots concerts such as Victory Tour 1984 in low quality, and I just dont watch it simply because I can't enjoy the concert for what it is.

See, I agree. The audio was awful, video blurry. But, Wembley looks nowhere near as bad as that. It's watchable, I just think fans are expecting way too much. From a 24 year old VHS, I think it looks pretty good.

ok, but if another city from second leg was available in better quality, what would you chose if you were given the opportunity ?

I wouldn't care, just as long as I could watch it and enjoy it, I can watch the Wembley teaser and I enjoyed it. I think some fans are being over-dramatic about how it looks.

The reason why fans can't agree on this issue is because we all have different televion sets, so we all see things differently. BUT I enjoy watching low-quality Bad tour vids on Youtube, so I will definitely enjoy watching this Wembley VHS too. However, if it's possible in any way for the estate to release the Bad tour on blu-ray, then we have to let them know that we want it!

Also, fact: the Bad tour would sell more if it was available both on blu-ray and DVD. And as a fan, I want Michael to be a best-seller!

Spot on!! Some of us have been literally waiting for this for 24 years. We don't need to be able to see MJ's beeds of sweat or smell his odore to enjoy it, or have him in 3D. Blu-Ray will come in time. Perhaps they could release LA 89 in 5 years for the 30 year mark as a stand alone release, or any random year for Christmas or whatever. Their doing the best they can with what time they have and the resources they have. They've done right by the fans with this and it's disappointing to go on all the major discussion threads on here and have the same issue about quality spread across all threads putting a downer and just looking for the negative in this. We'd all love high definition, but it's not the reality right now. What we do get though is Wembley and MJ at his absolute best, performance wise. Some one said they would take better quality footage over a lesser performance! That is madness! With MJ, i'll take the better performance over the blu-ray quality any day. As of now dvd is the basic standard of which most people in the world watch visuals. It's like the end of the world the way some fans are reacting!

Well, for me at least, the quality of footage extremaly improves or desaturates the way I enjoy the thing I'm watching. You may think you enjoy Tokyo 1987 footage. Performance was sure amazing and all, but I bet you'd enjoy it 100X more if it was in HD and 1000X more if you'd experience it in cinema in big screen.
Why people go to cinema? I guess to experience big screen. Why? Huh, I guess to enjoy the thing even more than in regular TV.
HD is the closest you can get if there's no big screen. HD makes you enjoy the thing even more. It improves the way you watch it. If you say you actually enjoy the Bad snippet in teaser, I say ''you ain't seen nothin' yet''. We live in 2012. It's 21th century. Yet the snippet we see looks 10X worse than regular VHS. It's no DVD quality, it's not even VHS quality. I couldn't see Michael's face. Yet I could count pixels. How can I possibly enjoy that?
Only thing I'm happy about is that it's not the ''real'' DVD quality as we cannot yet know if the DVD is gonna look as bad as snippet. I really hope it will look good, if not then decent at least.

WTF are you on about? Why do people go to the cinema? Why do people go to concerts dude? It's hardly the Estates fault that this is all thats availavble at this time. I have HD and blu-ray, but this is a dvd release. Do they have a means to transfer it to HD? Do you know? Because I don't know! What gets my goat is that a number of fans are sh#tting all over this release, nit picking on something their not in a position to judge. Why not, not buy it if your happy right now?!

Why to release VHS quality? I don't see a point to even bother. This ain't 90s anymore.

I'm gonna buy it and I will try to enjoy anyway though. Just take what they give, what else.

Is there a way to upgrade the quality? Who said it's being released on VHS quality? From what I understand it's unearthed from MJ's personal VHS copy. This seems to be what is available to them. It's not exactly their fault if MJ's vault material isin't of the best quality.

*Edit* By the way, I've seen the snippets from LA 89, and agree the quality looks great, but one thing I do know is that Wembley has been campaigned for, for years and years and is probably something that kept coming up when the looked at putting this package together. A future blu-ray release can't be ruled out, perhaps it's an issue of time and giving the fans something they kept asking for.

It will be good VHS quality at best.

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - General Discussion Thread

When Michael performed, he paid attention to every minute detail. Why did he wear his pants so short? Why did he wear sparkly socks? Why did he wear the glove? The finger tapes? Why did he want his audience to have the best sound quality possible? The best camera angles?

He wanted his fans, his audience to experience his performance the BEST and BIGGEST way it can be performed. As MJ fans, we're accustomed to the BEST in terms of performance. There are millions of fans who have never seen him perform live. Watching pristine quality on DVD/BluRay is the only way we can experience Michael.

If VHS quality is all the estate has access to, well, then so be it. I'm sure we'll all enjoy it no matter what when we finally sit down and watch. But after waiting 25 years for this to be released, you can't blame fans for being disappointed that this is the type of quality we're getting. Maybe it'll be pretty decent, who knows. Come on, it's only natural for us to be disappointed. It doesn't mean fans are sh*tting on this release or projecting such negativity. We're just expressing our disappointment at something that SHOULD be released the BEST way it possibly can be. As customers, we have a right to judge this.

Some people will be happy no matter what, as long as they see this tour. Some people will enjoy it MORE if it's released in the best quality possible. It's all personal preference. It's all personal viewing experience. As MJJLatvia said, why do people go to the cinema? Because that's the way to experience a movie! That's the way to experience outstanding sound, and picture.

For example, I don't really enjoy action movies. BUT, if I'm watching it in the theatre, or on BluRay with a big screen LED TV, then I enjoy it that much more immensely. I think that's a natural reaction.. At least for me.

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - General Discussion Thread

He also mentioned it in his autobiography that he wanted his fans to experience the concerts in a true experience; begin there, since nothing else comes close enough. Today we have a thing called High Definition... It`s far better than Michael could release in that day (he wasn`t even saitisfied with Victory Tour laserdiscs which had true film reels as source and got close to DVD quality, but it got cancelled...).

Fans have been dreaming a high def experience. At least we`re getting the high def part in audio. The multitracks are available...however, Michael was a audiovisual genius... Let them release a true 'dvd' snippet for the wembley release... some of the crowd shots in the teaser look from a different source. That could mean something..

No it wasnt! It was created for general discussion, hence the title. I agree that MJ wanted the best possible live expeirence for his fans, but it's nobodies fault if this is whats available right not. What if this VHS copy IS the best way it can possibly be? And I'm sorry but it DOES seem a lot of you are projecting such negativity. Theres only one issue that can be found fault with and thats the visual quality. As long as it's watchable, I'm happy. I'd like HD, same as everyone but it is what it is.

Anyways, I have no more thought on it. I'm not here to argue. I'm very happy with it and I'll just enjoy it and look forward to it.

^^ You're right, sorry, I thought I was in the BAD DVD discussion thread...My bad, there are way too many BAD 25 threads, I can't keep them straight...

Audio visual genius....EXACTLY...

The thing is, VHS is obsolete. In this case, we're backward instead of forward. Technology is moving at an incredible rate. No one in their right mind would enjoy watching VHS anymore. There's a reason why technology has moved on from that type of format.

I mean, I don't believe a VHS quality would be released unless there was access to nothing else. I just wonder why the estate wasn't more resourceful in trying to locate better quality. I mean, isn't that their job? If they can't do it, who can?

Re: BAD 25 - 2012 - General Discussion Thread

I can't wait for this to be released.

I will watch it over and over and over - and over again!!

Put your excitement aside for a moment, do you think it makes sense that the Estate can only find a consumer grade VHS tape for the Bad Tour? No, it isn't the Estate's fault that there isn't anything of better quality in MJ's fault. However, the Estate does have obligation to locate the film or the master. The Estate does have obligations to Michael to release good quality material.

Let's not lie to ourselves and be apologetic. Releasing a VHS rip on a DVD is simply quite ridiculous in this day and age. When you walk in an electronic store, you can find a large selection of concerts in Blu-ray. Yes, concert that took place in the 80's can be released in high definition. It's not something revolutionary. People have too much faith on the restoration effort. Video engineers are not magicians. They can't miraculously turn a degraded VHS tape to DVD. The limitations are not assumed here, but real concerns. Supposingly, the videos on Visions are "remastered", the quality was still disappointing.

No, future release of Blu-ray is not ruled out. But again, don't expect Sony to do Bad 30 or a special Chistmas release in 2013. Sony doesnt exist to please us. Whenever they plan a project, they have to analyse the market. You think they'll find enough demand for Bad Tour again within a short period of time to justify another Bad release? Bad 25 is already a re-release.

Not really, I am extremely happy with what we are getting, and no I don't yell about sony or the estate. Have you seen the final DVD? no. We have no clue just what it will look like, so let's all stop jumping to conclusions.

I just don't understand the hope that restoration effort can work magic. They simply can't add non-existing details. And, I don't understand the optimism that a Blu-ray release will be released soon. What we are going to get this year will be what we have on Bad for a long long time.

It really has nothing to do about projecting negativity. For crying out loud, it's 2012 and we are going to get a VHS quality DVD. If Madonna is releasing a VHS quality DVD, I'll simply skip it; despite the fact that I enjoy her live performance very much. Casual fans are less lenient on accepting sub-standard quality.

I agree with much of what you guys are saying, but this is the reality and I'm happy with it. I don't expect anything from Sony (perhaps that is why I'm partly happy with this) and was only using Bad 30 or a Christmas release as a hypothetical. I have no more to add. I'm happy. I've reached a stage where I realize, that MJ's catalogue is completely different to anyone else's in terms of how it's handled. It's always been handled (quite badly imo). I don't know why that is.

@ lom kit
I've never said once "we should be thankful for what we are getting" all I've said is "I'm happy with it". Anyways......roll on Bad 25!

You are happy...and so are we! We just have different viewing preferences and have different expectations on how we want to experience things, I guess. As I said before, I'm super pumped we're getting this...I've got a perma-smile since the day this was announced....

It's just that some people have lowered their expectations, and if we continue doing that, then we'll continue to get sub-par releases (VISION, anyone!?)...Some fans are Sony's wet dream, that's for sure (not saying you), I'm just using that as a realistic example as some fans will accept anything they can get. But we do have a right to judge.

But anyway, I'm happy too....As you said, 'roll on BAD 25!

i didnt mean everyone in prarticular. didnt quote anyone or writte any names.
just for now we are divided in two, again :-\
the one who don't understand why some want bluray and the other who feel that it could be more then this.

Have you watched a VHS tape on HD TV? Let me simply say VHS tapes are not compatible with HDTV. VHS doesn't contain enough details for it to be played properly on wide screen HDTV.

Yes, Michael's catalogue has not been handled the best way. And, that's me saying it politely. It really makes me quite bitter. I just don't understand why every 80's star can have a better quality release than Michael Jackson.

It just seems that the name 'Michael Jackson' alone is all that matters. It seems since MJ's passing, the people in charge posthumously have forgotten that quality and Michael Jackson are synonymous.

@arklove
actualy that startet long before michael passed.
it was since michael stoped "care" what sony is doing.
thats just my impression.

True :(

But I guess more of what I am saying is that Michael put his life work in the hands of the Estate and their track record of release hasn't been up to snuff. It's all the bare minimum. A lot of people say that the Estate IS Michael Jackson, so how exactly are they coming to that conclusion in light of a lot of the releases so far? Those people that say the Estate is Michael Jackson tend to be the ones who will take what they can get, sub part quality or not. But we all know that's not how Michael would have wanted it.

It's just that if Michael were here he would have been like, 'No, I don't care what you have to do, FIND something better'...y'know? That's the attitude I feel the Estate should have, considering Michael put his work in their hands...

That's just my opinion.

Yep. Plenty of VHS' from Bad, Dangerous and HIStory. Even stuff from before Bad. They might not be Moonwalker quality, but I could watch it, and I enjoy watching them. (Apart from the 93 ones obviously!) So lets say that recording footage was going to be released, but it was from a VHS,you would skip it because it didn't contain enough details to watch it on a HDTV? I'd certainly jump at the chance to see him record, much like We Are Here To Change The World. When I first saw him in the studio recording that, the colours were off, it was fuzzy but I couldn't care less because I got lost in seeing the absolute master at work. When I saw the daybreak clip on TV, I forgot about everything in the world. Everything. My problems, the fact he's not here etc. I wasn't thinking about quality, I was just watching Michael, and unlike all those awful YT rips, I could see the smile on his face. Which warmed my heart, and for the rest of that day I was smiling. I could see him in his absolute element and he was on top of the world at that point. Oh, and I heard that the TV clip wasn't even remastered. Just ripped from VHS and stretched to fit 16:9. Whilst they may not be able to do an awful lot, I'll still be happy watching the DVD for the first time. I'll forget about everything in the world and just enjoy watching the King sing his heart out, fans smiling, crying and even fainting. It's just about seeing Michael for me. So I would say that whilst it may not be the best quality, it's still going to be special seeing something that I have wanted for multiple years. There may be issues with it, but I'm not going to be interested, it still is watchable from what I've seen so far. I guess it's just each to their own on this one really.
