.... Hmm.

i'm gonna see milk and doubt this week and then it'll be safe enough to make some predictions.i can only say for the best animated film category that wall-e is most likely to win it.

2008 was a great year for movies. In this past month I've watched a lot of the most talked about and critically acclaimed '08 movies. So here are my picks for the Academy Award winners....

Best Picture
I'd first like to say that I am disappointed that two movies I really loved didn't get nominated in this category. The Wrestler and Gran Torino. I can let Gran Torino slip, but The Wrestler was amazing to me and I am quite disappointed it didn't get nominated. I also think The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is very overrated and I hope it doesn't win Best Picture. The only credit I give to it is for the make-up work and technology that went into creating the visual of Benjamin Button. Apart from that, the movie was very long and quite dull for the most part. I didn't really like it. I liked the rest of the movies nominated in this category. But I would wager a heavy bet on Slumdog Millionaire winning. It's a great movie, a fantastic love story and I know a lot of critics and people in the industry loved it. So I'm pretty sure it will win.
My pick: Slumdog Millionare

Best Director
This is a harder category to pick that Best Picture. There could be a variety of things that the Academy will look at when voting for a winner. Ron Howard is in with a chance for Frost/Nixon. But I think the award will end up going to Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire. From a directing point-of-view, I think the movie was well done. I like the way that after each answer the main-character gives on the "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" show, you then see a 'flashback' into his life to see how he knows that answer. So Slumdog Millionaire is again my pick.
My pick: Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)

Best Actor
I think everyone knows this, but you can narrow this category down to two nominees. Sean Penn (Milk) and Micky Rourke (The Wrestler). I think Sean Penn did a great job, but should he be getting so much acclaim just because he's a straight guy who played a gay guy and had to kiss other guys? Should Rock Hudson then be considered the greatest actor ever? I saw a review where that point was made and I think it's a good one. But even with the straight actor playing a gay guy thing aside, Sean Penn still did a great job, but Micky Rourke was better. He was amazing, he was so real, so human, and there's no doubt in mind he was the best actor of 2008.
My pick: Micky Rourke (The Wrestler)

Best Actress
This is a harder category for me to pick because I wasn't really blown away by any of these performances. Sure, they were all great, but none of them stick in my mind like Micky Rourke in The Wrestler. But I'll make a pick and my pick is Kate Winslet. There's no rationale for it except that I have a feeling she'll win. There's a lot of buzz about her in the industry at the moment. I don't know, I just have a feeling she'll win.
My pick: Kate Winslet (The Reader)

Best Supporting Actor
This is a no-brainer. Heath Ledger will win. Not just because he's left us and it will be a great dedication to his memory to give him this award but because he really did do the best job out of all these actors. He was incredible. Mind-blowingly so. He'll win for sure and it would be a great disappointment if he doesn't.
My pick: Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)

Best Supporting Actress
Again, this category is harder to pick than the others. Maybe I'm just not as impressed with female acting performances or something. I don't know, but I don't think any of these performances were stand-out. But my pick is Marisa Tomei. Maybe it's just because I loved The Wrestler. But even on her own accord, you can't deny she was great in this movie. So she's my pick.
My pick: Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler)

I wont make predictions for the more minor categories. Except Best Animated Feature (is that considered a major award?) will definitely go to Wall-E. So there we go, they are my picks, let's see if I'm right next month with the Academy Awards are held.

^ i agree that the benjamin button movie is kinda overrated. i think its basically because of the story. i dont think the oscar will go to either slumdog or benjamin. i'm betting on milk. as for best supporting actress i think meryl streep will be the winner. ledgers performance in the dark knight was phenomenal but i dont think it will win an oscar. why ?
because its very predictable and the academy loves to surprise ppl. because of all the fuss that surrounds that performance. also, his character was not complex like all the others that are nominated. his personality is one-sided and very unrealistic. jmo

Well it is a supervillian he was playing. Comics are enjoyable only if you are able to achieve suspension of disbelife. I don't agree that the character was uncomplicated. I think quite the opposite, actually. He was playing a seemingly insane criminal who killed for no reason other then his own pleasure, but at the same time, he gave what could only be taken as a very sensible reason for what he was doing. As an audience member, you actually felt yourself agreeing with the Joker. On top of which, Heath was able to make what should have been an unsympathetic character sympathetic, and that's just great acting. The Joker is also an unpredictable character who from one moment to the next can be a mischevious clown and the next a pyscopathic killer. He can be comical and frightening all at the same time, and his past is shrowded in mystery as he gives mulitple stories as to how he became what he is. Heath should win. Not because he died, but because he really deserves it, and I think he will win. Meryl Streep should win for best actress. If they give it to Kate Winslet, I'm gonna scream. Kate is a good actress, but Maryl is the best and she's always nominated but never wins. She should win.

Just because heath is dead doesnt mean he cant win this oscar his acting was spectacular in every movie he did you only have to watch them for 2 minutes to see that

and he has had a nomination before for brokeback mountain and lost out but i think he will win this

he did win the SAG award last night

5 out of 7 ain't bad.

I'm disappointed Mickey Rourke didn't get Best Actor. But I am so very glad Heath won Best Supporting Actor. I can't even begin to express how glad I am. It's wonderful.

THIS IS MY OPINION...
I do think Heath Ledger was a great actor but I think he got the award because he passed away un-expectantly and that was the Academy's only way to give him the Oscar that he should have receive for "Broke Back Mountain". I have been watching the Oscars for years and they do have a pattern when it comes to giving the awards to actors and actresses for past performances. Kate Winslet has been nominated so many times and now she finally won. Also I believe Sean Penn got the award for "Milk" because the gay community is very powerful in Hollywood. A lot of the movers and shakers in Hollywood are gay. That was Hollywood's way of sending a message to the people who voted yes for Prop 8, the anti-gay measure that was passed here in California. And just so you know I voted NO on 8.

Heath deserved to win for this role. The Oscars also have a history of not giving the award to actors who have passed.

Yes, I'm happy Heath got the Oscar, he really deserved it.

Now I also want to see Slumdog Millionaire since it got so many Oscars...

I didn't bother watching the Oscars only because it was another year where I wasn't going to see any of my favorite Hollywood stars there. I guess it is mainly because most of them are dead now. But I did tape the Oscars only because of the movie Slumdog Millionaire. I am so very happy that movie won so many Oscars. And I still have yet to see that movie. Which I will as soon as it comes to dvd. No way am I going to paying those insane movie theater prices.

Mickey Rouke should have won. and god does sean look stuck up or what. or is that only his expression?? lol

heath deserved the oscar..the acadamy thought back to broke back mountain in making the decision im sure as well. but some people do tend to treat people with this amazing compassion all of a sudden when they pass on rather than when they were alive. ..but with heath..if the guy was a bad actor he would not have gotten the award.
when he was alive folks were raving about this Batman role all the same.

on fashion..i wish the women would step outside of the box more. either they all look dressed the same or its not so glamorous anymore. with exceptions like halle berry.

you know i wish people would treat the grammys as big as the oscars..i mean its big but noone cares who the host will be and blah. music makes the world go around..it should get more respect as the oscars do..dont yea think?

and loved seeing my favorite actress whoopi there. :) and slumdog deserved it yay!

not many actors in history passed away the year that they were nominated for a role in a movie.

But some have and the Acadamy has only ever given it out once before to an actor who passed. Heath deserved it for this role. It wasn't given to him because he died, it was given to him because his portrayle of the Joker was phenomenal and anyone who says otherwise doesn't understand what it was he was able to do with the character. He created art and acting very rarely is raised to such a level.

I'm thrilled that Slumdog did so well....I've seen it twice and would easily go again. I agree the soundtrack is brilliant, must get my hands on it.

Slumdog truely deserved all the prizes it got! I could have seen some actor prizes for the kids that played Jamal though!

is it expansive to go to the theater where you live? In denmark it's not much more expansive that to order a huge dinner on burgerking :p uhm that thought made me hungry..

For those who were watching the oscars you might of caught this special oscars commercial of jimmy kimmel and tom cruise promoting jimmy's late night show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN-kBd5ltV4&fmt=18 And here's a behind the scenes look at filming it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN-kBd5ltV4&fmt=18 Plus jimmy had a special oscars show later that night with special guest mel gibson looking like colonel sanders from KFC. A lot of people are bitching about Sean Penn's acceptance speech where he mentioned the anti-gay people who were protesting outside the Academy awards and said:

Sean Penn said:
I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone.

What do you think of his statement and the "outrage" over it? Was he right to turn his acceptance speech into a political speech? I don't think he got too politically and he basically delivered a standard acceptance speech except for these few lines. And if they were protesters then that makes his comments even more legitimate.

Also, some are saying the Academy's choice of Sean Penn for Best Actor was political and that he didn't win the Oscar so much as gay marriage did. This was their way of approving of gay marriage. The major competition for Best Actor was Mickey Rourke who showed some support for George W Bush and some are saying that's why he didn't recieve an award from such a liberal-leaning organisation. What do you think of that? I think politics may have had something to do with it but Sean Penn did do an amazing job in Milk. I personally thought Mickey Rourke was better. He blew me away. But I can see from the Academy's perspective that this would have been probably the hardest decision of the awards. Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn were both amazing and I do think Sean Penn won mostly on his acting performance with maybe a little political persuasion thrown in there.

That's what I was saying in my post earlier, Sean Penn win was a political win. And his speech wasn't a typical speech coming from Sean Penn who is usually very very low key and laid back. Mickey Rourke should have won, but he had a reputation in Hollywood for being difficult to work with when it came to other actors and directors. That may have changed now.

Also I wasn't saying that Heath Ledger didn't deserve to win, but had he lived he would not have won the Oscar. He deserved to win for "Broke Back Mountain" but he didn't get it... My reason for saying this is because "Dark Night" grossed Billions of dollars around the world yet it didn't get that many nominations for many of the major catagories. Most high action pack films in Hollywood that do extremely well at the box office do not get nominated for Oscars. Or if they do, they are shut out from winning.
