love it! and i pray to god i dont live to see her die in my lifetime. losing one icon with michael was bad enough.

i think much of her success comes down to clever marketing, really good choices in her career, and her versatility as a performer and artist. i cant think of anyone else who was able to transcend each era so breathlessly as she was. shes like the everready bunny - she keeps going and going and going.

madonna and michael should've had a baby together hahaha

I'd say this thread is a response to the "The Queen of Pop is..." thread cause this says a lot.

That list of achievements is dated now but it's still grand to look at. Madonna has actually now tied Elvis with having the most top 10's in the history of the Billboard charts (38). Also, I didn't see it listed anywhere but her song "Hung Up" has the record for debuting at #1 in the most countries (I believe around 40 countries simultaneously). Although 2005 belonged to Mariah Carey in the states, Madonna outsold her by a landslide worldwide with her Confessions On A Dancefloor album. Also, back then, Madonna's Confessions Tour was the record holder for highest grossing tour of all time but she has now beat her own record with the still ongoing Sticky & Sweet Tour which is now the all time top grossing tour in history... and this is during an economic crisis!

Confesssions did not outsell Emancipation.

Also, "Hips Don't Lie" was #1 in over 50 countries if I'm not mistaken.

Wow, very impressive comprehensive list. I've never adored Madonna like my other favorite artists such as Prince, Michael, or the Beatles, but I've always enjoyed her hits as catchy, addicting pop classics that are welcome to get stuck in my head any time!

Favorite song: Borderline

Madonna is a great artist who works very hard every day to get all these positive achievements in their career. And all this is the result of hard work. She will never stop. Madonna also will bring many new things that is always reinventing. She will always be the greatest pop singer, will always be the Queen. And Michael will always be the greatest pop singer and our King. They are the greatest!

Madonna also will bring many new things that is always reinventing. She will always be the greatest pop singer, will always be the Queen. And Michael will always be the greatest pop singer and our King. They are the greatest!

Confesssions did not outsell Emancipation.

Also, "Hips Don't Lie" was #1 in over 50 countries if I'm not mistaken.

Nope, Madonna holds the record for having a song debut at #1 in the most countries simultaneously. Emancipation sold 6 million copies worldwide- 5 million being in the states. Madonna's Confessions sold 8 million (reportedly up to 10). It's 100% fact. Mariah has never had the world wide appeal or sales of Madonna. EVER. Sorry to burst your bubble. All the lambs in the world can flood the topic and try to dismiss the truth all they want but it doesn't change a thing.

madonna and michael should've had a baby together hahaha

lol that would have been the ultimate music baby!!!

Congratulations to Madonna. She will always be the queen of pop. She always said she wanted to be like Michael Jackson. Seeing her achievements in writing is mind-boggling. Amazing!

Sweetheart, by the end of 2005 Emancipation had scanned 5.9mil in the US alone becoming the #1 selling album of 2005. This is a known fact.

Are you really gonna sit there and tell me it only sold 100k copies outside of the US? In addition to that, Emamcipation is 6x platinum according to the RIAA.

And there are multiple sources stating that COAD only sold a little over 8 million:

And there are multiple sources stating Emancipation sold over 10 million:

And mathematically:

8 < 10

Madonna < Mariah

Anything else? :coffee:

To date Confessions On A Dancefloor has sold over 12.5 million copies worldwide making it one of her most successful albums in the last 10 years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confessions_on_a_Dance_Floor

Wikipedia is not a reliable source for information unless their a footnote to the source.

Reuters is an reliable source like it or not. Not to mention, both are press releases. COAD has sold a little over 8 million.

I'm sure Mimi has moved more copies since it's original release back then but it still sold poorly outside the USA- managing to shift a mere million copies outside US borders (despite being re-release TWICE). Confessions did indeed sell more. Sorry but nice try. LOL!

P.S. Wikipedia does indeed give references.

It still sold poorly? It sold 6mil in the US and 4 million outside of the US. That doesn't seem like selling poorly to me.

And if you want to be technical:

Madonna sold 8 million of COAD. It sold 1.9mil in the US according to scans. Assuming over the years ppl have bought the album, rebought it, and digital downloads we can safely assume 2mil sold in the US...and 6 million worldwide.

Mariah sold 10 million of TEOM. It sold 6mil in the US, and 4 million woldwide.

They both sold the same worldwide (for Madonna) and US (for Mariah) when you cross the albums. However, Mariah sold more worldwide than Madonna did in the US. So tell me whose album looks worse?

Secondly, Mariah's album was only re-released ONCE. Saying it was "re-released twice" implies that there were two additional releases following the original release.

And where are your sources stating that COAD outsold TEOM?

I'll wait. :coffee:

If you have no valid sources then the point still stands.

Reuters > Whatever you say
Insider > Whatever you say
NBC > Whatever you say
Prnewswire > Whatever you say
Islands' report > Whatever you say

Would you like for me to continue dragging you in this argument, or would you like to admit that Mariah outsold Madonna in 2005?

I don't wave a white flag because you still said what I wanted to get across and that is Madonna sells more worldwide than Mariah. I looked in to those numbers and it does appear to be neck and neck but unfortunately it's hard to narrow it down to 100% factual numbers. I will say they are close but the fact still remains that Madonna outsells Mariah worldwide being that she sold 8 million outside of the USA (2 million within) and Mariah 4 million (based on info you provided). Madonna's much more popular outside the US than Mariah Carey (and Mariah herself is losing grip on the USA audience in which she relies on as evidenced by her last album). Of course, hardly any artist is selling these days due to all the piracy. No one buys music anymore. Madonna's Hard Candy was one of the top 5 albums of 2008 (it's top 10 best selling of 2009) having sold 3.2 million copies. That tells you something right there.

Also, here's a link that has a bunch of chart info if anyone is interested (MJ is all over the place)...

TEOM outsold COAD. Get over it lol. And let's not exclude US sales, because last time I check the US is part of the world.

And if you want to use Mediatraffic, can you tell me what album is at #4 and what album is at #10 please.

Let me correct you: Madonna has some achievements, but those achievements are nothing compared to Michael's. Michael is the artist who broke all the records. He holds almost all the records. As a MJ fan, you should know it. So...seeing HIS achievements in writing is mind-boggling. Amazing!

What does Michael have to do with this?

Well good for Madonna I guess lol. I really think this particular thread is better suited for a Madonna site, but that's great for her. She's been very successful obviously. She must be doing something right.
