$30 Billion!! ...a 2Dec08 article says that Sony/ATV was recently valued at $30 bil

Ok. Enough of the indepth discussions on MJ's personal worth. No one knows how much he has and obviously he isn't trying to let anyone know. The bottom line is that he is not broke.

Let's move on.

Yep, that's how it is. Those magazines in many cases get the stars themselves along with their reps telling and talking about the value of various assets they have then Forbes goes about checking to make sure they are being factual before putting them on a number of rich lists they publish. Michael clearly just isn't trying to be all out like that, who can blame him when you have nutboobs always trying to sue not only him but any celebrity.

True and well said. Michael has always been very humble as well, and it doesn't seem like he care about how much money he has, it's what he does for others with it that I think really sets him apart from other wealthy folks today. Our Micahel, always a gentleman.

I know what you mean, i hear he was last spotted at a homeless soup kitchen lol
I hear that he had to wear the same pair of pants, two days in a row! :bugeyed

I think it's 50 years after something is published its free to use. So beatles from back in 1958 is free. I don't know exactly how it works.
The laws are different depending on the country, date of death of the composer/author, who actually owns the copyrights... in the composition world, it's 50 years from the date of death of the composer for Canada, and in the US it's now date of death plus 70 years. Lookee here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act

(The extension in the US is so the Disney corp. can keep making more money...)

in the uK artists are trying to get a change in the law regarding only getting royalties for so many years after the song is released as talked about above. its the performance rights that disapear after so many years( depending on the country) nothing else tmk. so for eg after 50 years britney spears wont get any money for a song that she sang on. unless shes the songwriter/producer/publisher. in other words all the talentless artist of today who dont write or produce will stop making money after so many years cause they only sung on the song and nothing else.

re the topic at hand i totally agree with mkgenie. all the facts point to the cat being worth around 2-5 billion. imo 30 is a crazy figure when sony/atv isnt even the biggest publishing company around. its a quote out of the blue in some book that has never been supported by any other figures but cause its positive some jump on no matter how unrealistic it is.if the book had said the opposite and that the cat was only worth 100 mill ppl wouldnt be believing it. at the end of the day all that matters is mj keeps 50% control of it no matter what it is worth

Actually I don't believe the $30 billion.

Can't see how it can go from $4 billion to $30 on 5 years! It seems impossiple, especially now with the economi going very very bad.

Also record sales are falling, so people don't earn that many money on songs anymore!

Record sales are falling but record catalogues have risen in value rapidly because record companies are seeking to go into the catalogue business now. Also the so called amout was an ESTIMATION. there was no official valuation, where as this guy has said that the catalogue was VALUED.
Sony,Atv is the 3rd largest catalogue, but it houses the worlds most expensive catalogues, including musicals and counrty and westerns. Rick James claimed that it was valued at 12 billions, years ago. Now that the internet and ipods are on line, I believe the value has increased 3 fold.

It's probably a missprint or something. $3 (three) billion is more logical.

well..lol..each of us is entitled to our opinion...:)

YEP!

Because, just like ME and a lot of other people, you just NEVER know when it comes to MJ. LOL!

We continue to "think" we know what the REAL deal is with MJ, and then MJ comes along and all of a sudden the script is flipped. I ain't gonna even PRETEND to know what the REAL deal is. LOL!

Because unless any one of us have "MJ's SONY/ATV SPREAD SHEETS" in front of us, anything we say is JUST a guess.

aaaaaaa mennnnn

It's very reasonable. There are like 600 000 songs or something. Let's say if 20 of 500 songs are hugely valuable meaning 4 percent of the the whole catalogue. For example if those 4 percent are like a million dollar worth each song (AVERAGELY) and all the rest just for example 1000 dollars each (AVERAGELY). That would mean that 4 percent is like 1000 times valuable than all the rest. With this kind of mathematics:
24 000 songs are worth 24 billion dollars together
576 000 songs are just a little bit over half a billion dollars together

Think about this. And think about how much really famous hit songs really can make. That's why their worth is so much.

Well either way that's a lot of money. But I wonder if it's split between the musical owners, the songwriters, the producers and the artists' families or the artists themselves.

this is an article I came across today that says that the last time Sony/ATV valued Northern songs (the Beatles music mostly).. it was valued at $30 Billions... The author of the new book on the Beatles states this...

there are many doubters as to Michael's fortune and business acumen... but what I like about this article is that it challenges the Beatles' business sense.. in what they or their advisors did wrong...

its just power for the course for me...

Very interestin' Rasta... ;)

A lil' off topic: I slept on the article you posted last month -

Publishing powerhouse Sony/ATV Music Publishing Nashville claimed its seventh consecutive Country Publisher of the Year title

http://www.mjjcommunity.net/forum/showpost.php?p=1674772&postcount=9

:clapping:

With ALL of the songs acquired just since Mr. Bandier took over, IF it ain't worth 30 billion yet, it's well on it's way...
:cheeky:

And besides if I was an artist who had his songs in a catalog that was sold to Sony ATV, I wanna know how much of a percentage I'M getting, ya dig? ;)

they said in court that sony atv was worth 2-3 billion and acuff/rose was worth the same if not more....

so if homie has half of both catalogs....then he's pretty darn rich....and it doesn't matter w/ music sales falling....selling them to ads is more profitable...

hunk of burning love for kraft cheese? y not!?

viva las vegas for viagra? ooookay!

revolution for nike? i think that's about right! woot woot

After the trial Sony ATV has expanded a lot. For example those many soundtracks were added...
