The Video Vanguard Award, also known as the Michael Jackson Music Video Award or the Lifetime Achievement Award, is given to musicians who have made a profound effect on the MTV culture.
NO other Artist has had such an impact on the world, culture and MTV, than the King of POP, Michael Jackson.
It was Michael Jackson who changed the music video from a mere promotional tool featuring musicians playing instruments and singing, to a piece of art with a storyline, or as Michael likes to put as 'short films'.
His video Thriller influenced and changed music videos into what it is like today.
It was Michael Jackson , who broke down MTV's color barrier and revolutionized Music Television
Attention MUST be paid to the Legacy of Michael Jackson!

For some reason, MTV made a decision to remove Michael Jackson's name from this award.
This was when,Michael was fighting for his life,in a court of law. He was later, acquitted and the accusations against him were proven FALSE.
It is time for MTV to honor the commitment,they made to Michael Jackson, his children, his family and his fans.
We can not name, one artist that has changed the world of Music Television, more than Michael Jackson
It is time for MTV to "do the right thing" and honor "the King of POP

I'm all for it and I'm so proud of the fan family!
Michael Jackson shall be Victorious!
Long Live the King!

Is there any information on how and when the decision to remove Michael's name was made? I tried to google articles for 2003-2005, but found nothing about it. There is no official web site for the award, but the Wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTV_Video_Vanguard_Award doesn't mention any name changes either. Apparently, the Vanguard Award was given to U2 the last time in 2001, and no one was awarded since then. So how do we know Michael's name was removed? Were there any statements from MTV back in '03?
It would be helpful to have links and references at hand before I bother top management with letters.

Mellie123 (original poster in News section) who started this effort lives right in NYC and has been campaigning for this. All I can find is the link to the petition where is states that award was renamed in 2003. From the petition: http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/mjvideovanguardaward

The Vanguard award was derived as note to achievement in video music. It had been given to many musicians and directors for their influence in the music culture. In the beginning, it was named the Video Vanguard Award, then the Michael Jackson Music Video Award in 2001. In 2003, after Michael Jackson was accused a crime, the video award was renamed the Lifetime Achievement Award. in 2005, Michael Jackson was exonerated by a jury of his peers with a NOT GUILTY verdict. The award was never renamed in the honor to Michael Jackson since. Since Michael Jackson was determined NOT GUILTY, means he is INNOCENT and his name should be restored.

The Vanguard award is an achievement musicians strive to obtain. It is recognition for worldwide cultural influence in the music domain. Michael Jackson remains the most awarded musician of all time with over 380 awards throughout his career, some 12 category awards were given to Michael Jackson many times over. Michael Jackson was awarded his name on the award due to his worldwide influence to musicians without any age boundary and his achievements in music entertainment. Michael Jackson to this day remains a highly respected individual in the music world.

It is time that Michael Jackson's name is restored on the Video Vanguard Award. When Michael Jackson was exonerated to criminal charges, his innocence should remain intact worldwide. Possbily due to media influence, his name remains off the award. There is no doubt amongst the musical community that Michael Jackson's legacy is in part his music and that over 40 years, he is still the most influential performer of all time. No other musician has been able to achieve his status ever or since. His music continues to influence all ages and will continue to do so in the future. If this is not lifetime achievement, what is?

We the undersigned ask MTV to reinstate Michael Jackson's name to the Video Vanguard Award. We recognize it was given to him as his lifetime achievement unmatched to any other and as his inspiration remains worldwide. We believe it is time MTV honors Michael Jackson once more.

We apologize for the typo in this petition, petition spot does not allow us to edit existing text.
The Michael Jackson Vanguard Award was first presented in 1991
instead of 2001. Prior to that MTV handed out this award and named it the Video Vanguard Award, and on occasions called it
the Lifetime Achievement Award .

We have over 5,000 views on YOUTUBE!
thank you #TeamMichael and please keep sharing the video, everywhere !!

A plea addressed to MTV so they put a stop to their cockiness regarding Jackson? After what they did to him on his own birthday in '02? No, thanks. MTV channel is a complete joke anyway, along with their award shows.

It seems that it has been given twice since 2001 - once in 2003 and once in 2006 and effectively it was not given as "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award" -<TABLE border=1 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 sizcache="1" sizset="0"><TBODY sizcache="1" sizset="0"><TR nodeIndex="1"><TH>Année</TH><TH>Artiste</TH><TH>Notes</TH></TR><TR nodeIndex="2"><TD>1984</TD><TD>David Bowie, The Beatles, Richard Lester</TD><TD>Richard Lester et les Beatles ont été honorés car ils "ont inventé le vidéo-clip".</TD></TR><TR nodeIndex="3"><TD>1985</TD><TD>David Byrne, Kevin Godley, Lol Creme, Russell Mulcahy</TD><TD>Byrne a été décoré pour son travail avec les Talking Heads. Taj had tweeted about it in september and he mentionned the missing ; and the campaign has been launched.

"Michael&#8217;s nephew Taj Jackson, son of Michael&#8217;s brother Tito, discussed some memories about MTV on Twitter. While tweeting about how MTV removed Michael&#8217;s name from the lifetime award and how they begged him to make an appearance, MTV responded immediately. This is the full transcript:
&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to watch the VMAs because every time I watch it, I think about 3T being there. No one rocked the VMA&#8217;s like my uncle Michael did. I am still upset at them for not mentioning his name on the Video Vanguard awards anymore. The lifetime award, they removed his name&#8221;
&#8220;I was there when MTV was on the phone begging my uncle Michael to make an appearance cause their ratings were down. Funny how easy they forget.&#8221;
&#8220;They didn&#8217;t mention his name the last 2x they gave it out. My comments were about MTV America. I think the MTVs overseas are way better, are they?&#8221;
MTV responded immediately at the discussion that arose on Twitter between Taj and Jackson fans. Via @MTV they tweeded: &#8220;Hey MJ fans, we hear you loud & clear. I&#8217;m hearing we don&#8217;t do it every year, just when ppl deserve the recognition. Will look into it.&#8221;
