Band/Singer: Sun Nan & Han Hong
Song Title: 美丽的神话 (Beautiful Myth)
Origin: China
Info:

Han Hong is the stage name of an eminent Chinese singer with Tibetan origins, whose prominence came from her signature works Tibetan Plateau and more recently, Heaven's road (天路). She is also a songwriter who specializes in Chinese folk music.

Her singing has distinctive Tibetan characteristics. She's able to shift freely from piercing high pitches to soft low tones. She once said that if she hadn't become fascinated by pop music, she would have become a Tibetan folk singer.

the best composition ever conceived

Paco de Lucia - Zyryab Part 1
http://youtube.com/watch?v=myG5mZxwNOg

Zyryab Part 2
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8X4IBM9ElY4

Andalucian flamenco by the legend Paco. this is a homage to Zyryab who was an Iraqi music student from Baghdad who created and introduced the Spanish guitar (built upon from the Oud) to the West.

Paco fuses Spanish, Middle-Eastern and Jazz influences.

Music from different areas is nice, but I've never liked the term "world music". It makes it sound like if it's not "western" music or in english, then it's not important or a lower class of music, like saying "third world".

Nice. Really nice. I was amazed by it.

Do you know how to play Oud, arXter? For me Oud generates music from heaven. Follows by Sitar. I really would like to learn to play Oud in the future.

I was around 6 to 7 when I listened to my first Oud. It was played by our King of Oud named Fadzil Ahmad. I was completely mesmerized by it. In Malaysia, it is common to play Oud (we called it Gambus in here) while watching a traditional dance called Zapin.

Unfortunately Fadzil Ahmad passed away several years ago. I was actually heart broken when I heard the news.

Another Oud hero of mine is late Munir Bashir.

I was in trance when I heard this track for the first time. Flamenco Roots from Munir Bashir.

Well if it makes everyone more comfortable, I will change World Music to International Music.

I'm still waiting for Ladysmith Black Mambazo to come to Malaysia.

oh the Oud is something else - it's out of this world to listen to and impossible to play LOL i have one and been meaning to learn it properly but never had the time nor effort. i've never heard of Fadzil Ahmad, but i'll be sure to check him out.

this one's a fusion of flamenco, Middle-Eastern fiddle and South Asian percussion.

it's by a Spanish hip-hop group called Ojos de Brujo.

nothing beats the fiddle.

and this is by the same group, but just a collection of furiously syncopated flamenco drumming

I forgot. I should have explained what is Zapin on the first place.

Zapin (Jawi: زافين) is a dance form that is popular in Malaysia especially in the state of Johor. It is believed to have been introduced by Muslim missionaries from the Middle East in the 14th century.

In the old days, only males were allowed to perform but nowadays, female dancers are included. It used to be performed exclusively for religious ceremonies but through the years it has become a form of traditional entertainment, hence the participation of female dancers are allowed.

The dancers usually perform in pairs and are accompanied by a traditional music ensemble normally consists of the gambus, accordion, violin, marwas (bongos), rebana (drum) and dok.

There are numerous types of zapin, and each type varies by the movement and style of dance:

  • Zapin Melayu Johor
  • Zapin Pulau
  • Zapin Tenglu
  • Zapin Tenglu 2
  • Zapin Lenga
  • Zapin Pekajang
  • Zapin Arab
  • Zapin Jambi
  • Zapin Singapura

Also if you would like to go further:

The gambus (Oud) of the Malay world: its origins and significance in zapin music by Larry Hilarian, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, 06 Jul 2004:

A very good example to showcase a complete Zapin from its music, music instruments, dance choreography, clothes and related:

Niyaz - Nahan (Hidden)

Niyaz-Dilruba

Niyaz—Persian and Urdu for yearning—is the musical brainchild of three musicians: top deejay, programmer/producer and remixer Carmen Rizzo, vocalist and hammered dulcimer player Azam Ali, formerly of the group Vas, and Loga Ramin Torkian of the popular Iranian crossover group Axiom Of Choice.

Azam was born in Iran but raised in India, where she started singing at an early age, absorbing the rich cultures of both countries. Her early music influences include the English soprano Emily Van Evera and singing-medieval- mystic-visionary-composer and abbess, Hildegard Von Bingen. Loga Ramin Torkian plays guitar, the saz, and rabab, while Carmen Rizzo does all the programming; keyboards, synthesizers and drums, as well as performing live with the group. On their new album for Six Degrees Records, Tony Levin of King Crimson plays bass along with other Indian and Armenian musical guests.

Niyaz is a mixture of old and new music styles. Their lyrics are drawn from Sufi mystics, such as the Persian poet Rumi, and other classic poetry sung in Urdu. Niyaz claims it for our times and gives it a modern expression.
