Why did Michael wear arm bands, what were they a symbol of?

Why did Michael wear arm bands and what were they a symbol of, I've read several different reasons ie they were to remind him of suffering children around the world or that they reflected his mood, but which is the right one?

Also why did he wear band aids on three fingers, anyone know?

It's from the military police. Michael wore military styled jackets, so that goes with it.
