janets middle name is 'damita jo' ; I'm assuming that Joe of Joe Jackson but who is / was Damita?? If anybody...

Katherine's favorite singer was Damita Jo Dublanc and so she gave the middle name to Janet to honor/commemorate her.

Lol Janet thinks Katherine made the Damita part up and the Jo is after Joseph but I think she was named afte the singer Damia Jo DuBlanc ironically one of her biggest hits is I'll be there

Sounds similar to ''Stand By Me'', did they sample ''Stand by Me'' in this song or did Stand by me sample this song?

Never knew there was a real Damita Jo. Ha ha ha...I always thought it was made up.

smh at the "Stand by me" sample. It's more than a "sample" when the whole song is copied. Music is the same...only the lyrics were changed.

Sampling wasn't invented back then. The Damita Jo song was a reply or answer song to Ben E. King's song. Answer songs often used the same arrangement or music as the original song. Lydia Murdock's "Superstar" sounded similar to the song it was replying to - Mike's "Billie Jean". The Real Roxanne's answer song sounded like UTFO's "Roxanne Roxanne".

So in other words they copied/used the exact same music and sold it as an reply/answer song? Smh:no:

It's not really any different than what Weird Al does. If the answer song sounded totally different, people aren't as likely to make the connection to the original. Answer songs used to be common in soul & blues songs. They don't all sound like the original song, but it usually helped with the general public.

So....basically an answer song was nothing more than stealing a great melody that was already a big hit? And then making money off someone else's creativity? :mello:

Sometimes the answer song was written by the same person/s who wrote the original. Anyway, most singers/groups in those days didn't write their own material. They just sang whatever the record company gave them, which were usually written by staff writers or songwriters for hire. If the answer song sounded exactly like the original, they had to pay the writers of the original song, if different.

I get what you mean, but still

I love Janet's middle names. It sounds so beautiful, Janet Damita Jo :)

Motown used to have many of their acts record the same songs. It's always been the record "business". The only criteria is to make money for the company. That's why they've always ripped off the acts. Whenever something becomes popular, all the record companies saturate the market with the a lot of same thing and people get tired of it and move on to the next craze. People think there is some sort of artistic ethics, but it's no different than any other business.
