In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the album "Bad" by the late Michael Jackson, the island soon will find out who's the baddest of them all. Everybody is invited to an afternoon full of moonwalks and thrillers, as Hit Radio 100, along with Pepsi Guam Co., presents "Who's Bad?" a competition to determine the island's best King of Pop imitator. The action starts at noon tomorrow at the Micronesia Mall center court.
"The first round will consist of the contestants singing a Michael Jackson song in a cappella for 60 seconds," explains Greg Mosley, a radio DJ, who also will be one of the three emcees at tomorrow's showdown.
The top contestants from the first round will advance to the next round, where they will be tasked to perform full-on Jackson songs, complete with the proper attire, music and props. A panel of three judges will determine the winner, "in a similar set up to shows such as 'America's Got Talent' and 'American Idol,'" says Jason Respicio, advertising sales manager at Hit Radio 100.
Respicio suggests you bring your own props and MJ attire. If you have a preferred karaoke track of one of Jackson's songs, Respicio says bring that too and they'll play it for you during your performance.
Winners will be selected in two categories: best vocal and best over-all performance. Both winners will be awarded $200 in cash and a prize package from Pepsi, including Jackson memorabilia.
Aside from the singing competition, "Who's Bad?" will feature a moonwalk competition and King of Pop trivia for the audience, as well as performances by the Guam Dance Alliance and local musicians.
"We've been wanting to pay tribute to Michael Jackson ever since, and this 25th anniversary for 'Bad' and Pepsi's recognition (of Jackson) is the perfect opportunity to do so," says Rick Nauta, Hit Radio 100's program director and a disc jockey, who will be one of the three judges tomorrow.
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate the icon of pop music."
Contest registration will be available on-site and open to all ages free of charge. Group performances are prohibited in the competition.
"If you plan on coming out, we highly recommend that you have your own music prepared, in case that you are selected to advance to the second round," Respicio says.
"We want performers and people who love MJ and appreciate him in regards to his performance capabilities to just come out to an afternoon celebrating him and his work."
