If you were head of Sony back in 2001, which Invincible singles would you have assisted Michael in promoting/releasing? Let's just say history was different here ;)

Chronological order:
1. Unbreakable
2. Whatever Happens
3. You Rock My World
4. Butterflies
5. Don't Walk Away
6. 2000 Watts
7. Break Of Dawn
8. Threatened
9. Speechless
10. Heaven Can Wait

I personally went with 10 singles (yes it's a lot), but if we compare this to other albums.. Bad had 9 singles and Dangerous had 9 (would have been more).

How many singles would you have released and how would your list go?

Good question. mine would be, in this order:

1.Unbreakable
2.You Rocked My World
3.Butterflies
4.Whatever Happens
5.Speechless
6.You Are My Life
7.Threatened

1. Speechless (Promo, as it was)
2. Unbreakable (with the 20 minute video that Michael wanted)
3. You Rock My World
4. Break Of Dawn
6. Threatened

Unbrekable
You Rock My World
Whatever Happens
Threatened

Unbreakable (like Michael wanted it)
Whatever Happens (I always pictured the Video in the YRMW-Setting with MJ and Santana performing it on a small stage)
Invincible (with a minimalistic B/W Dance-Video)
Threatened
Butterflies

I always wonder how things would be different if Invincible was appropriately promoted with short films that fit Michael's visions.

To me, the following would be wonderful for singles with good videos (no particular order):

1. Unbreakable
2. You Rock My World (I love the exisiting short film)
3. Speechless (don't know if they can make a video for the song, but it's just too beautiful)
4. Butterflies
5. Whatever Happens
6. Threatened

1. Butterflies (A video similar to The Way You Make Me Feel)
2. You Rock My World (I live the existing video)
3. Break Of Dawn
4. Unbreakable (Video MJ wanted)
5. Threatened (A Thriller styled video)
6. Heaven Can Wait

1. Unbreakable (20 Minute Scream type video)
2. Break Of Dawn (No Video)
3. You Rock My World (Same Video)
4. You Are My Life (Similar to OMC video but with his kids)
5. Threatened (B/W video, similar to mid-1900s horror film)
6. Whatever Happens (Like GITM but with western theme)
7. Lost Children/Speechless (One video for both, similar to Cry but with Michael)

1. Unbreakable
2. Break Of Dawn
3. You Rock My World
4. Speechless
5. Butterflies
6. Heartbreaker
7. Whatever Happens
8. Threatened
9. Invincible
10. Cry

I agree with this.

My list would be as follows:

1. Butterflies
2. You rock my world
3. Don't Walk Away
4. Speechless
5. Cry
6. The Lost Children
7. Whatever Happens
8. Heaven Can Wait
9. Break Of Dawn

I just love his slower "love" type or "Don't leave me" type of songs. :) I was really into it when I did a video for "Butterflies" in his memory.

1. Unbreakable
2. You Rock My World
3. Whatever Happens
4. Cry
5. Threatened

2. You Rock My World
3. Break Of Dawn
4. Threatened
5. Butterflies
6. 2000 Watts
7. Cry
8. Heartbreaker

BUMP! :) This is how I would've handled Invincible:

1. "Unbreakable" (using Michael's "Beat It"-inspired video idea, explained in Frank Cascio's book.)
2. "You Rock My World" (with the existing video, but rewritten. The ending never really made sense to me.)
3. "Heartbreaker" (no video for this.)
4. "Whatever Happens" (Western-inspired video, very Clint Eastwood-esque.)
5. "Threatened" (scarier than "Ghosts" and "Thriller" combined, with a dance that would stop the world!)
6. "Privacy" (I've always thought it would be cool to see Michael dancing with just shadows.)
7. "Speechless" (no video for this. Nothing interesting comes to mind.)
8. "2000 Watts" (I've always envisioned a revamped version of the "Scream" video for this one!)

My choices are:

1.) Unbreakable (Invincible as a B-side)
2.) Butterflies (an instrumental as the B-side)
3.) You Rock My World (an instrumental as the B-side)
4.) Whatever Happens (Break of Dawn as the B-side)
5.) Speechless (One More Chance released as an exclusive B-side)
6.) Threatened (to be released around Halloween 2002) (Thiller as the B-side)
7.) Heaven Can Wait (You Are My Life as the B-side)
8.) Cry (What More Can I Give as the B-side)

I'm thinkin, about 5 singles.
I don't know what could be "the magic number", but I wouldn't have stopped at like, 3.
The album got more gems than that.
(in this order)

1. You Rock My World --- just like the way things went. It was a good choice.
2. Butterflies --- I think there was actually a lot of buzz esp. on adult R&B stations.
As the second single with a classy video, who knows what magic it woulda done?
It was the 3rd single, but I woulda persuaded Michael to go for this first.
A remix version by R.Kelly released as well to keep the momentum going.
3. Unbreakable--- another dance track wouldn't have hurt.
Woulda been a lot better if a remix had become a single.
I like the song as it is, but the beat shoulda been beefed up. It needs more base.
4. Break of Dawn --- to the public, this single musta felt like "New R&B MJ" coming.
The last time he put out a sexual song as a single, it was In the Closet.
And it's not like he'd done that a lot during the pre-Dangerous era.
If we talk about slow jams in particular, we got The Lady In My Life, and that was it.
5. Cry --- I don't think the song itself is bad, but not that good either.
IMO, certainly bad choice for a single, but I woulda understood where he was coming from.
Songs about humanity and peace meant a lot to him personally.
But I wouldn't have agreed on releasing it as the 2nd single.

I think 5 singles well promoted would be enough.

1. Unbreakable
2. You Rock My World (this one was supposed to be a VERY HUGE hit it if were promoted correctly)
3. Speechless
4. Whatever Happens or Break of Dawn
5. Cry

Invincible is an album with much potential, such a shame its promotion was a mess.

1. "Unbreakable"
2. "You Rock My World"
3. "Butterflies"
4. "Speechless"
5. "Cry"
6. "Break Of Dawn"
7. "Heartbreaker"
8. "2000 Watts"
9. "Privacy"
10. "Threatened"

1. "Unbreakable"
2. "You Rock My World"
3. "Butterflies"
4. "Speechless"
5. "Cry"
6. "Break Of Dawn"
7. "Heartbreaker"
8. "2000 Watts"
9. "Privacy"
10. "Threatened"

Now this is where I personally can relate to! These singled and their short films would have made INVINCIBLE a best seller!

1. speechless, You Rock My World, Don't Walk Away,Cry, and You Are My Life.

1. Unbreakable Single (Video) + (Album version and Funky Dance mix)
2. Butterflies (Single edit and Orchastration version)
3. Speechless (Live preformace) + (Single with Break of Dawn as B-side)
4. You Rock my world (video) + (Single edit, and instrumental)
5. Threatened (Video) + (Halloween 2002 single with Shout as B-side)

If I was in charge of promotion, singles & video releases, it would have gone this way:

1. Unbreakable
2. Cry- this would have had a competely different video to it, and would be a 9/11 tribute.
3. You Rock My World- same as the original video.
4. Butterflies- if a video was put to this song, IMO the single would have done better on radio..despite the fact it did very well for no promotion at all (number 3 on the Billboard R&B charts. :) )
5- Whatever Happens- It would have a mexican/spanish feel to it, shot in the video color similar to In The Closet. This and Unbreakable would be the two songs I would HEAVILY promote for single/video releases.
6. Break Of Dawn- Something sexy, and shot in black and white...more sex appeal then In The Closet...more skin then You Are Not Alone
(EDIT) 7. Don't Walk Away- Can't believe I forgot about this song..as it's my favorite ballad on the entire album. I would shoot the video with a She's Out Of My Life/Stranger In Moscow feel to it...and would push it a bit on radio.
8. Threatened- Something scary, lots of dancing, vintage MJ.
9. You Are My Life- This would finish the video releases. A tribute to MJ and his kids.

Also, with Shout being on the Cry single, I would do a video for that too. Something of a concert setting like Give Into Me....but without the explosions.

Launch Single:
Unbreakable (Remixed. The album version had so much going on IMO. I would've stripped down some parts, got rid of the intro, removed Biggie's part, and edited it for maybe 4 minutes) (Faux video setting similar to Give In To Me) (Shout (stripped a bit so you can hear Michael) as the b-side)

Second single:
You Rock My World (different video, it's one of my least favorites of Michael's) (Blue Gangster as the b-side)

Third single:
Butterflies (Michael as businessman who is in love with his beautiful coworker who doesn't recognize that he likes her) (Instrumental as the b-side)

Fourth single:
Whatever Happens (Michael driving through the desert with Santana in the backseat playing the guitar or Michael and Santana performing at a club while shots of a couple on the run are spliced in to connect with the song's story) (A Place With No Name as the bside)

Fifth single:
Heaven Can Wait (no video) (Children Of the World and a remix of HCW as the b-sides)

Sixth single:
Don't Walk Away (video would be similar to the videos of She's Out Of My Life and Why with Michael singing while walking through an empty house with shots of him singing on a stool are spliced in) (a stripped down remix as the b-side)

Not necessarily this order but for me these are strong enough to be singles:

You Rock My World, Butterflies, Whatever Happens, Speechless.

I'd consider 2000 Watts and Threatened as well. And then could maybe see Unbreakable or Break of Dawn in some kind of double A side situation.

1. You Rock My World/Speechless
2. Cry/What More Can I Give (charity single for 9/11 victims)
3. Butterflies
4. Unbreakable
5. Heaven Can Wait
5. Break of Dawn
6. Whatever Happens
7. Threatened

YRMW
Speechless
Whatever Happens
