What was the first ever single you purchased?

Janet Jackson "You Want This" on cassette.

The b-sides were pretty cool as well... 70s Love Groove and And On And On.

I think the first single I bought with my own money was the song "Ode to Billie Joe." I found the song to be so mesmerizing...was I somehow attracted to the darker side of it? I doubt it, I was only about eleven.

What I believe was the draw for me was that it "told a story."

I think one of the things that aided in making MJ's Billie Jean such a hit is it, too, told a story, and because it did, when he performed it, he could put so much more into it...he became the character whose plight he was singing about.

Interesting, when I think about it, both songs are about a "Billie."

single?
Mmmm.... I guess that was "Jesus to a Child", by George Michael.

I have but a few singles, just by George Michael and Michael Jackson.
In my country singles are not popular at all and are very difficult to find. Music stores would have only albums.

I've actually never bought a single. It's like an outdated concept to me unless we're talking about buying a single off iTunes, which I haven't done either.

I think the first single I ever bought was by 702 off the Goodburger soundtrack!:D

I'm so old I don't remember. I'm looking at my old 45's and I have:

Hazy Shade of Winter - Bangles
What Have You Done For Me Lately - Janet Jackson
Rhythm Is Gonna Get You - Gloria Estefan
Bad Boy - Miami Sound Machine
Dance to Themes From E.T. - Walter Murphy

I don't remember which was the first though.

I think I have singles on cassette but I'm too lazy and old to look at them.

the only single I ever bought was 'Scream' ....other than that, I NEVER buy singles....I only bought it cuz I was too impatient for the album to come out and I wanted it DOUBLE TIME....I was 13 years old, and saved my money for it .....Taken from the savings I had for the insanely expensive HIStory album when it came out....:D

I think it was Humpin' by The Gap Band and Who Said? by the Isley Brothers. I bought them both at the same time. Technically, it was a 45 by Big Bird called What Can I Do When I'm Alone or something like that. :D But I didn't buy it myself. I asked my mom to buy it when I was little.

^Since you mentioned one your mother bought for you, I will too...I remember getting a record player for my birthday one year from my mother (I must have been 11 or so) and along with it she included the 45 single for Frankie Valley and The Four Season's "Oh What a Night". A huge hit at the time. Hmm the lyrics for that song are pretty racy. Thinking back, my mother was pretty permissive with us in some ways (and strict in other ways). But at the time I had no idea what they were really singing about.

To us older ones that's all we had.

Ditto- no way I can remember back to the late 50's, early 60's. Half the stuff my parents already had. Plus, back then, not like a young person or even teenager had much money to spend on records. :timer:

I hardly bought any singles, usually just cassettes with the whole album or compilations. The first single I bought was Black or White :)
