Anything Goes is like 95 percent Music related anyways, why not have a Music Forum Section? :D It would be a good idea! :D

There was one and also separate sections for books, movies/TV, sports, general topics (like current news), and a few other sub-forums. But a few years ago, when the site was updated, they were all combined into this one section. In the Michael only part of the site, the MJ news was a separate section from the other stuff like talking about his records. It probaby was all put together because most of the folks who used to post here left and the entire site became really slow. Now it seems most of the people here now are Michael Jackson only fans, when years ago, there were people who were into other topics. The 2300 Jackson Street section used to be busy too. There was one poster who actually knew some of the Jackson family and would post there. I think her name was Soso Deaf (or Def). I just remember the name because that is what Jermaine Dupri's production company was called (and also she would write in like a Louisiana Cajun accent). šŸ˜‚

Oh... well why not just go to that artists forum. That defeats the purpose of a "mj" forum
Not every music artist has a forum or even an official website, especially if they don't make mainstream music. What if the artist is a so-called "one hit wonder" and people want to discuss them and the hit? šŸ˜‚ Anyway, the ones that do have a forum generally have separate sections for other artists & topics. I've never seen one that has only that artist and/or main topic.

What is there to talk about Michael anyway? It's just people making new threads that already exist, like endless "I don't like Invincible" & "the estate does not do what I want" threads. A performer that is alive & active has new music to talk about. Mike does not have much material to discuss since most people here currently are not that interested in The Jacksons/J5 & solo Motown which is the majority of Mike's releases. He only has 6 albums if you don't count that. Mike doesn't have non-album B-sides like Prince, The Beatles, & Sting. He didn't do session singing like Michael McDonald.

I don't think you understand....WHY come to a mj forum to discuss it, they have many groups on fb & etc & its all about what ones chose to talk about. Nobody talks about the steel town days, early motown era. Just 1979-2001/posthumous. (Sigh)

Not everybody is a member of Facebook & Twitter. Plus those kinds of sites are full of negative trolls & bots & spyware, lol. A lot of people have other interests than Mike, and the other sections used to be busy. As far as talking about Steeltown, few if any people here were around for that and those were only local singles in the Gary Indiana area. I don't think that most people are aware that stuff exists. From what I notice, many of the people here now seem to be primarily interested in the HIStory era and maybe Dangerous. So they're probably younger and those were the records that were new albums for the years they were around instead of records that came out before they were born.

I think for Motown era, a person would have to be familiar with that era of music to get it. Early 1970s R&B/funk in particular. Otherwise it is just oldies that they can't relate to it as far as the sound. That is the reason albums like Farewell My Summer Love & Xscape used contemporary remixes rather than the original mixes that might be "dated" to the current audience. I've seen people here say that they don't really like the Off The Wall album that much because it is "too disco" or they don't dig the New Jack Swing songs on Dangerous. Well those albums came out when disco/NJS was hot (in the USA). What are they supposed to sound like? Teddy Riley is a NJS producer. I've never seen on other sites that people only care about main artist to the point that they are just interested in the stuff that only contains them. Comments like "I wish Paul McCartney or Jermaine or this rapper wasn't on this song".

& this place isn't?
Not really, or at least not any topics I go in. If you want to see real trolls, go to Lipstick Alley or Prince.org or read the comment section of magazine/newspaper sites & Youtube. šŸ¤£ People spamming uploads by Warner Brothers talking about "release the Snyder cut!" on videos that have nothing to do with that. That still does not have anything to do with discussing other artists and/or topics here. The threads in "anything goes" exist and most of them are old, so that meant that past members wanted to discuss them. If you're not interested, then you don't have to look at this part of the site. Like I don't go into the Paris Jackson part of the site, because I'm not really interested in her. I don't even know why she was taken out of 2300 Jackson Street and given a separate section.

Exactly so.

All good reasons to stay away, imo. Social media? Or is it anti-social media? An obvious point, perhaps, but still valid, imo.

I've had a couple of mini-conversations about Steeltown and it has popped up on a few threads but, yeah, there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in that part of Michael's career. Shame. There's some good songs on that Steeltown compilation album.

This is pretty normal, as far as I can tell. Most people tend to stick mostly to the music they were into in their teens and twenties. Of course there are exceptions and it's not so much about being closed-minded, it just seems to be the natural way it goes. They've even done academic studies on this showing that most people cling to the stuff they are familiar with.

This is a really good point. I can't prove it and, of course, loads of people can get into music from before they were born. It happens all the time. I do it myself with jazz and blues from the 30's - 50's. That is all 'new' music for me. But I think this is an important point and one that is overlooked so much. There will be many, many people who are an exception to this. A lot of people would have a very indignant reaction to this statement but, in general terms, I think this is very true. It doesn't mean a younger person couldn't 'get' Tamla. Of course they could. But they would have to really immerse themselves in that era - not just the Tamla Motown stuff but other record labels.

Early 1970s R&B/funk in particular.
Yep.

Guilty as charged, lol. I was around when the album was released and I never liked 70's disco. I've posted about 2 dozen songs on the disco thread here but that doesn't alter the fact that 70's disco is not my jam. But you're making a different point, of course. You're talking about people who weren't around at the time who don't have much enthusiasm for the album because it doesn't sound contemporary to their ears.

I have a much better relationship with OTW than I used to. I still don't love it but there are songs I can actually listen to now.

I do find that stuff slightly weird. Personal taste is everything, of course, but I don't really understand this. I don't like TGIM but I understand why Michael did the duet with Paul.

It's also that younger generations are different than the older ones, and many find old entertainment problematic as far as the subject matter goes. This is the era of "cancel culture" and folks calling stuff "woke". That isn't really new to now, but the internet & social media made it widespread and mainstream. A lot of the music, TV shows, & movies that was popular decades ago probably wouldn't get made today. Disney has put Song Of The South in a vault and won't put it on DVD or on Disney+, although there's bootlegs of it. There's scenes in Fantasia that were cut out in the 1960s and has never been on the home video releases. A lot of old cartoons by many studios are not shown today or are banned. In the 1920s there were a lot of songs with "coon" in the title. There's a song from the 1970s by Paul Anka called You're Having My Baby. A lot of women today have a problem with that song. But it was a big hit at the time. It's also probably why there are way fewer daytime soap operas today, when there were many back in the day. I guess reality TV is the new soap opera. šŸ¤£

oh, for sure. Yes, to all of this. It's a story with a lot of layers, a lot of nuances.

I know! Wobbly sets! Crappy scripts, lol. Loved it. :ROFLMAO:

I guess reality TV is the new soap opera. šŸ¤£
Such an improvement. NOT!!!
