Fans swamp Web site offering tickets for Michael Jackson tribute in Austria

VIENNA (AP) — Fans have swamped the Web site offering tickets for next month's global Michael Jackson tribute in Vienna.

Some 85,000 passes for the Sept. 26 event in the Austrian capital are up for grabs on http://www.tribute2009.com. Prices range from about $85 to more than $712.

Event promoters say the Web site crashed more than half an hour before the sale was due to start at 11 a.m. EDT after a million people had accessed it.

Jackson's brother Jermaine is expected to name the performers in the next two weeks.

The tribute will take place at a 17th-century palace. Jermaine Jackson has said Vienna was chosen as the venue because his brother "loved castles."

Takeaway culture: James Cracknell - The Friday

Tuck into this week’s cultural treats. From top pop to cult viewing, Olympic rower James Cracknell shares his picks.

often listen to music. Though, to be honest, it’s mainly whatever my little boy wants to play. He’s really into Michael Jackson at the moment.

He loves “The Way You Make Me Feel” from the Bad album, which I have to hear about 50 times a day – the pleasure of listening to it does wear off when it’s on repeat during a two-hour car journey, however! I can play Michael Jackson’s albums over and over again, though. I’m definitely not bored of him yet. I like Johnny Cash, too, but it’s rare I get to choose the music we listen to in the car.

The detailed tribute has been created by artist George Vlosich III, who specialises in producing one-of-a-kind pieces on the popular children's toy.
It depicts Jackson in a number of his most iconic looks, from his fresh-faced days in the Jackson 5 to the military jacket and sunglasses-wearing King of Pop who sold tens of millions of records in the 1970s and 1980s.
Vlosich usually spends 70-80 hours working on his Etch a Sketch creations, but said that he spent almost double that on his Jackson homage.
His previous subjects include US President Barack Obama, Hollywood actor Will Smith and Elvis Presley.
"I've worked hard to create a new type of art that is totally different and unique," he writes on his website.
"I can proudly say that I've transformed the Etch A Sketch from a toy into a rare collection of pop art. My artwork has been featured in museums and galleries across the country and now sells for thousands of dollars."
The Etch a Sketch, which was invented in the 1950s, allows would-be artists to create drawings from aluminium filings by twisting two plastic knobs. Its popularity has survived the digital age, and in 2003 it was named as one of the top 100 toys of the last century.
Vlosich says that he hopes to get his Etch a Sketch signed by performers at a Jackson tribute concert in Vienna, Austria that is being held on Sept 26, before putting it up for auction.

Everything dead is new again: UMG buys Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra

Universal Music Group recently signed deals giving it control over much of Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra's catalogs and likeness rights, Variety reports. Universal will become the official multiyear licensee for 38 albums and 14 DVDs by Ol' Blue Eyes, and the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of merchandise for the King of Pop.

In an industry always struggling to find the latest thing, UMG is exploiting an increasingly lucrative strategy. Living stars' private lives and public problems often get in the way of business, but dead artists offer a known, popular product, with no drama. And once a celebrity dies, his or her likeness and output can be endlessly manipulated for maximum financial effect.
In Jackson's case, the two months since his death have been among the most lucrative of his career. Between June 25, the day he died, and July 16, Jackson sold 2.3 million albums in the U.S. and nine million worldwide. Amazon.com reported that it received more orders for the Gloved One's albums and MP3s in the 24 hours after his death than it had over its 11-year history.

Death can also vastly increase the value of an artist's likeness. In life, Jackson was a tragic figure, his later years tinged with disturbing rumors, physically destructive surgery and drugs, and an increasing inability to connect with a listening public that had long since moved on. For his fans, Jackson had long been a guilty pleasure: watching the shambles of his personal life made any enjoyment of his work bittersweet. Even the radiant happiness shining through his earlier work is tinged with the darkness of the longterm costs of his childhood fame.

But death has a tendency to erase darker themes from the public memory. A visit from the Grim Reaper restored Elvis Presley from a bloated, washed-up Vegas novelty act to the sleek, leather-clad sex god he once was. For Jackson, the metamorphosis promises to be similarly startling, shifting him from being a damaged cautionary tale to, once again, a pure, glowing personification of innocent love and artistic joy.

The same can be said of Sinatra. While the Chairman of the Board was never as physically iconic as Jackson, his forceful I'm-gonna-pop-you-bozos persona was appealingly, elegantly sleazy. In life, he veered from PG-13 to hard R, combining bullying, intense sexuality and more than a touch of hard living. In death, however, there need be no grotesque domination of Mia Farrow, no unsavory February-December relationships, no embarrassing tales of mob connections. The post-death Sinatra can be all romance: a skinny kid with a velvet voice and a lot of moxie.

It will be interesting to see what UMG tries to do with Jackson and Sinatra's likeness rights. Legal standards have given licensees the freedom to endlessly manipulate dead performers, but 1990's-era laws have constrained what companies are capable of doing. Even so, with T-shirts to be made and bobbleheads to be sold, it's easy to imagine how a newly redeemed Jackson and a family-friendsly Sinatra can be pushed on a hungry American public.

Michael Jackson News for August 22,2009:

Agents raid pharmacy in probe of Jackson's death

Investigators look for evidence of improper dispensing of controlled substances, a category that doesn't cover the anesthetic propofol.

Federal agents investigating Michael Jackson's death seized prescription drug records Friday from a Beverly Hills pharmacy favored by the pop star.

Nine Drug Enforcement Administration agents armed with a search warrant spent five hours sifting through records at Mickey Fine Pharmacy for "evidence of improper dispensing of controlled substances," Special Agent Jose Martinez said.

Jackson was known to have prescriptions filled at the Roxbury Drive store, running up a $101,000 drug bill in 2005, which the pharmacy collected after filing a lawsuit.

The DEA search, part of a multi-agency investigation into Jackson's June 25 death, suggested that detectives are looking beyond Jackson's personal physician and the role of the anesthetic propofol. Detectives have been considering manslaughter charges against Dr. Conrad Murray, but law enforcement sources have told The Times that prescription medications -- other than the propofol they said Murray administered -- were found in Jackson's system.

The search warrant specified controlled substances, a category that doesn't include propofol, and Murray's attorney has indicated that the doctor did not prescribe any other drugs. Martinez declined to say whether the pharmacy was the target of a criminal investigation, but noted that only pharmacies, and not doctors, can be investigated for improperly dispensing medication.

A man answering the phone at the pharmacy hung up on a reporter and an attorney did not return calls seeking comment.

The search came as the probate judge overseeing Jackson's affairs approved a traveling exhibit of Jackson memorabilia.

Lawyers for Jackson's mother, Katherine, had criticized the deal negotiated by temporary administrators of the estate as a "fire sale" that didn't do enough to protect the singer's legacy. But after listening to witnesses involved in the deal between concert promoter AEG Live and the estate, as well as outside experts, Judge Mitchell Beckloff called those arguments "hyperbole."

"There is no question in my mind that this is in the best interest of the estate," he said.

The exhibit was part of a larger contract that settles Jackson's debt to AEG Live for backing the performer's planned comeback concerts as well as addressing the costs the promoter paid for the entertainer's memorial service. Attorneys for AEG declined to discuss the specific terms of those portions of the contract.

The exhibit will travel to three cities, beginning in October with a four- to six-month stop at London's O2, an entertainment complex that was to be the site of Jackson's comeback concerts, said John Norman, the president of AEG subsidiary Arts and Exhibitions International. The other two stops and the contents of the exhibit have yet to be worked out, he said.

NEW YORK — New York City officials want to find a larger place for Spike Lee to hold his celebration of Michael Jackson's birthday.
The filmmaker had planned to mark the late King of Pop's birthday with a block party-style bash in Brooklyn's Fort Greene park on Aug. 29, when Jackson would have turned 51.
But a spokeswoman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday that city officials and Lee are looking at other sites because crowd estimates have grown.

Jackson-themed bus tour celebrates singers roots

Bob Roberts Reporting
CHICAGO (WBBM) -- If you want to find Michael Jackson's roots, a new bus tour leaves weekends from Matteson and Hyde Park, to make a Jackson-themed tour of Gary, where the King of Pop was born, and lived till he was 9.

The tour apparently has the approval of Jackson's father, who said Friday that he was pleased to see the Steel City get the recognition in the "King of Pop Hometown Tour."

"I think that's good," Joe Jackson said. "I"m glad to see that they praise him like that."

But it's not just about Michael Jackson.

You can see the small white-sidinged house, at 2300 Jackson St., in Gary, that the Jackson family once called home. You can see where Michael and his brothers were born and attended school. There's a stop in front of the steel mill in which Joe Jackson once worked, another at Lucky's Lounge, where the Jackson 5 first performed, and yet another in front of the house that was once the office and recording studio of tiny Steeltown Records, the label that first signed the Jackson 5 to a contract in 1967.

Aboard the bus, Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 hits play, along with videos depicting Gary and those who once knew him. Tour guides fill any spare time with Jackson trivia questions.

Jackson said his son would be pleased to see Gary get the recognition and reap the benefits.

"He was so well known all over the world, but they never gave him his props," Joe Jackson said. "They always talked about him, and all that, but he helped everybody who needed help."

Jackson is involved in the development of a museum in Gary memorializing his son, and said only that when it's built, it will be "a good one."

'Michael Jackson tribute tattoo doesn't make me a sinner'

A DEVOUT Muslim mother says she has been called a sinner for having a tattoo of her idol Michael Jackson.
Lifetime ***** fan Fatima Butt, 37, of Higher Antley Street, Accrington has had a picture of his face tattooed on her left upper arm despite it being frowned on by some Accrington Muslims.
The mother-of-eight who works at Hyndburn Park Primary School as a nursery nurse and is currently studying beauty therapy at college says she has been labelled a ’sinner’ by those closest to her.
She said: "I don’t understand what the problem is, I’m not hurting anyone. I have loved Michael Jackson all my life and I wanted something to remember him by.
"I work hard and look after my family, I am a good Muslim a tattoo doesn’t change that."
Fatima’s family has a special Urdu-Arabic teacher who teaches her eight children how to be a good Muslim and under her rules all tattooes are a terrible sin.
The pop loving fan said: "How many people drink or smoke and are still classed as good Muslims? What I have done is no different."
Fatima has passed on her love of all things ’Jackson’ to her children; twins Nimat and Tayyib, 12, Awwal, 10, Hawwaa, eight, Kamil, seven, Nabi-Siraj, six, Ada, three and Azaan, seven months who all claim they are bigger fans than their mum.
Their home which is currently under renovation will have an entire room devoted to the music superstar, when completed which will house a huge collection of posters, picture frames, records, masks, badges, dress up kits and jigsaws.
The collection which was started when Fatima was 16-years-old is estimated to have cost several thousands of pounds.
Fatima had also paid £500 for two tickets to see him at London’s O2 arena as part of his final ’This is it’ 50 gig tour.
She said: "I had just got home from college when my uncle phoned me to tell me he had died. I just couldn’t believe it.
"All Michael Jackson fans are very loyal and they will never let his memory die."
Fatima’s tattoo was created at Accrington’s newest tattoo parlour Inkognito on Blackburn Road by co-owner Beki McGill.
Fatima added: "My husband and children have supported me and that’s all that matters. I have always pleased myself regardless and I will continue to do so. Jackson is a hero."

Don’t you forget about him

Like millions around the globe, I was saddened by the untimely, unexpected death of Michael Jackson. For Gen Xers like me his passing was particularly difficult because he was a towering icon to us — a musical superhero who, with “Thriller,” provided the soundtrack to our youth.
Many of us were only beginning to adjust to life in a post-Michael Jackson world when barely a month later John Hughes, the Hollywood writer/director we loved for the way he understood and reflected our lives and feelings in such classic 80s teen films as “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” died of a heart attack during a walk in New York.

Ben Brown, the Man Credited for the Discovery of Michael Jackson, Speaks for the First Time Since the Untimely Passing of the 'King of Pop'

NEW YORK, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In a written statement released today, entertainment executive Ben Brown said, "I continue to be a bit traumatized by the loss of my friend Michael Jackson. In addition, this is a most sensitive time for me personally since the recent loss of my only daughter Donna Cherice Brown, and my wife Joanna who suffered a stroke triggered by the loss of my daughter."

According to a spokesperson for Super Gold International, Brown continues to receive calls and letters from around the country related to the passing of Michael.

The spokesperson went on to say that Ben Brown's responses usually include recommendations that friends and fans try to think about the good times. Speaking of Michael's incredible recordings and performances to date, Michael achieved what many artists seek; total creative freedom completely unrestricted by lyrical subjects, rhythmic styles, or melodic moods. Brown provided a few examples of non traditional rhythms like the song, The Way You Make Me Feel, or the rock influence of songs like Beat it, and fun tunes like Say, Say, Say.

"Michael Jackson," Brown reiterated, "was in fact a giant in the world of music which he will continue to impact through his creative works."

AUSTIN AMAZED BY JACKSON'S ART SKILLS

Music mogul DALLAS AUSTIN has revealed MICHAEL JACKSON's talents didn't stop with music - the King of Pop was a great painter and sketcher too.
The record producer, who worked with Jackson on his HIStory album, admits he was really impressed with the pop star's artistic efforts.
He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "People didn’t know how much of a painter he was. He would draw a lot of stuff inside his album.
"If you look inside of the HIStory album... there’s a little kid sitting in the corner, which is one of the sketches that he did while we were actually sitting in the studio.
"I was like, 'Man, do you paint and draw?' and he just started showing us all these paintings and drawings that he had like at his house. The stuff was amazing."
