This article is pretty old, but it was worth posting.

U2's first UK gig in their current tour will break all previous attendance records for a Wembley Stadium concert, organisers have claimed.

Around 88,000 are expected at the Irish group's concert on Friday - 5,000 more than what is believed to be its biggest previous crowd for a musical event.

U2's radical "claw" stage has enabled tour organisers Live Nation to increase the capacity for the sold-out show.

(...)

Michael Jackson holds the record for Wembley concerts, the late singer having notched up 15 appearances at the legendary venue.

The Rolling Stones come next with 12 concerts, followed by Madonna with nine.

However, U2 will exceed the American singer's tally when they play their 10th night at the stadium on Saturday.

The band's current 360 tour uses three different stage structures, each in the shape of a giant claw.

Well, at least they didn't surpass his 1988 record from the bad tour for the record for Most Successful Concert Series Ever; Michael sold out for seven nights at the legendary Wembley Stadium, London, England. A total of 504,000 people saw Michael perform at the legendary stadium in the summer of 1988.

And don't forget that MJ holds the record for being the first person to sell 1 million tickets in Wemberly.

Also you have to consider that there were 2 different Wemberly stadiums. MJ sold out 15 times in the old one. Breaking records there. And U2 sold out 8 in the old one. When you think about it, they only sold out 2 shows in the new wemberly.

But in the grand scheme of things, who cares if U2 sold the most shows there. They still can't top MJ's record set from 1988. Plus MJ made more shows there then they did. MJ has 15, they have 10.

Thing is that it was always going to be broken. More people go to concerts now as its so much easier to get tickets now with the growth of the net. Plus U2 tour all the time whereas MJ was sporadic with his. And Wembley is a lot more music friendly now so more bands go there. Muse are even due to go there in September and that would have never happened in the old stadium. Michael still has a ton of Wembley records that won't be broken though. No one has sold out Wembley that many times, and no one will comes close to.

No suprise U2 broke Mike's attendance record; the "new" Wembley, built in 2007 is far bigger than the one Michael played at in the 1980s and '90s. The rotating claw for U2's 360 tour means it is not a coventional stage set up and that every seat is put up for sale as there are clear views for everyone. Mike's normal rectangular stage blocked seats, so that was a few thousand wasted. Concert tickets have been increasing for years too.

well..first of all..it's a claim of the organizers. secondly, it's a deceptive article, because the attendance of one concert vs. the number of concerts. U2 is for the first..Michael still holds the record for the second, respectively.

and...in both instances, the venue was sold out, so it's really an insignificant article. i'm guessing..what? standing room only people came in for U2? so what. MJ still sold the place out. once you sell a place out, the other 'facts' become mundane. Guiness still calls MJ the most successful entertainer of all time. not U2.

it really doesn't matter what all the articles say, because MJ made his mark. and one thing U2 doesn't have that MJ has, is all these articles making MJ the standard of comparison.

So, have they broke the record officially yet?

(BTW, the stage and performances at 360 gigs are more spectacular and gigantic than This Is It..., what a pity that Michael was limited with O2 Arena, U2 and Rolling Stones have always had bigger stages than MJs...)

What was the point of posting this old article? Geez some members here just love to start drama for no good reason! :rolleyes2:

come on..., TII stage was incomparable..., it was not so huge...

What are you talking about? You do realise that TII never made it onto the O2 stage right? Or have I missed something here? Plus it's unfair to compare the Staples Center and the Forum arenas which were only being used for the rehearsals with the actual main shows of U2 and other acts. (if that's what you're getting at)

I'm wondering if there's any point leaving this thread open...

...let it be..., you are too nervous...., have some imagination..., stadium and arena are two different things.

Umm i thought Michael Held the record for the old wembley arena not the new one? I remember reading he held the record for the Bad tour before the stadium was torn down and rebuilt

because O2 is owned by AEG and in order to use and promote their own venue, AEG forced MJ to do 50shows there.

agree. just cause its got mjs name on it doesnt mean its worth posting. if u cant tell the difference maybe it should be left to news staff to post

Not important, but anyway..

am I misreading it says MJ 15 appearances, U2 will be making their 10th appearance..?

15 is more than 10...

If it interests anyone, the biggest U2 attendance record to date happened to be in Italy - 150 000 fans attended a 1997 Popmart show. This was the stage:

Some of Michael's records would be surpassed sooner or later. It's no biggie.

So true! Thank you for putting it in perspective.

Michael is the most successful and greatest entertainer of all time, and not U2. I personally went to a U2 concert (as a guest- I am not a fan) in Miami which may be irrevelant to this article I know, but the place was only one third sold. I literally was falling asleep- they were so boring- but again I am not a fan and I am spoiled by the greatest and most successful entertainer of all time! Just had to get this in.

Michael was and will always be the standard in the many facets of the music business - now that is one of the signs of a true genius/legend!

I think that record is make to be broken after. And who breaks writes the name on the History, and Michael wrote his name so many times.

Congrats to U2... before them than Lady Gaga hehehe

Don't even joke! :fear:

Regardless of all the other records, I doubt there will be an entertainer who will sell out 50 shows within a couple of hours. ever.

That will never happen. There's no one big enough to sell out that many shows at the o2 arena.

50 years old and with no new songs, there is only one Michael Jackson

It´s getting more crowded on this planet.
We became 5 billions , maybe it was in the 80ths, now we are more than 6 billions.
There are more people who can go to concerts nowadays.
