Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” moving up to November release date

Lionsgate and Tyler Perry appear to be tossing their hat into this year’s Oscar race.

The studio announced this morning that Perry’s next picture, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,” will premiere on Nov. 5 … and not in 2011 as was expected.

The star-studded film, an adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s landmark 1975 stage study of the African-American female experience, packs Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Tessa Thompson and Thandie Newton into its ensemble.

Clearly, the studio feels Perry’s drama can compete in the annual awards race. Perry had success just last year as a producer for Lee Daniels’ “Precious,” which won two Oscars (for screenplay and co-star Mo’Nique).

More on “Colored Girls” as it begins to screen, but this is a very good sign for Lionsgate, a vote of confidence for Perry, and a shakeup for the still forming Oscar picture.

Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls Set for Box Office Gold

Lionsgate announced last week that it will release Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” on Nov. 5th, positioning the film for year-end awards consideration. Based on the critically acclaimed play by Ntozake Shange titled “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf,” Perry’s adaptation looks poised to become a box office hit. “It’s a serious film that really lends itself to the fall period,” said Lionsgate distributor David Spitz.

Perry’s adaptation is described by the studio as a poetic exploration of what is to be of color and a female in this world. But for the uninitiated, the play “For Colored Girls” consists of a series of 20 poems performed by a cast of seven women characters, each of whom is known only by a color: “Lady in Yellow,” “Lady in Purple,” and so on. Tackling issues of love, abandonment, rape, and abortion, embodied by each woman’s story, the play drives home the power of womanhood.

“For Colored Girls” features an A-list cast of talented Hollywood ladies, including Thandie Newton, Kerry Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Tessa Thompson and Macy Gray.

I hope this is released in the UK, but not months later than in the USA this time, Janet and Whoopi; should be an amazing film :D

I don't know anything about this movie. I am just going by the picture. But for it to be about "colored" girls the cast looks very European to me. maybe it's th epicture they chose??

Edit: Maybe it is the picture.

European? they look like black women to me, like michael said black people come in all colors...hence colored.

I am looking forward to this movie and seeing Janet on the silverscreen again. I hope she continues pursuing more acting roles. She looks gorgeous on that picture!

Janet looks utterly gorgeous in those stills....wow...red is her color...love the lips! Im glad she is doing more films...keep it up Janet and do well! Great cast with Thandie Newton, Kerry Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Tessa Thompson and Macy Gray. I can't WAIT!!!!!

i'm wondering why she is wearing the colored contacts..is it because her character is insecure about her own eye color? or is it just that her character is about making fashion statements that way. i'm assuming it has nothing to do with the actress, since it's being marketed as the marquee to a movie.

I think it has to do with her character who i heard wasn't very nice in this play.

Good questions.

PS: Get ready for more interviews about Michael and 'you know what'.

Ohhh, it will be interesting to see Janet do mean :D
yes it will! here is something i read about the play

dark phrases
The play opens with seven women dressed in the colors of the rainbow plus brown, running onto the stage from various directions and then freezing in place. The spotlight picks out the lady in brown, who comes to life and performs the poem "dark phrases," which speaks of the trials of a young black girl growing into womanhood in America. The other six women chime in—after the lady in brown says "let her be born"—as being from "outside Chicago," "outside Detroit," "outside Houston," and so on. The melancholy mood shifts to a playful rendition of "mama's little baby loves shortnin" and dance ("let your backbone slip") and a game of freeze tag, which is interrupted by the next poem.

graduation nite
A theme of male assault combined with longing for male companionship is introduced, as the lady in yellow narrates, with some pride, how she lost her virginity in the back seat of a car. The other ladies
variously express their agreement with or disgust over her joy in the discovery of sex.

now i love somebody more than
Their discussion slides into this next poem, narrated by the lady in blue, who says she has Puerto Rican blood. Speaking some Spanish she describes her love of music and dancing and of the men who make music. The rest of the ladies softly join in saying "teammasque" ("Have you more than").

no assistance
The lady in red interrupts to tell that in spite of rebuffed love she continues to "debase herself for the love of another." But she ends in strength when she says "this note is attached to a plant/i've been waterin' since the day i met you/you may water it/ yr damn self." The lady in orange responds with a throwback to her desire for love and joy ("i wanna sing make you dance"). The rest of the ladies join in with "we gotta dance to keep from cryin," "we gotta dance to keep from dyin."

i'm a poet who
The dancing culminates in a declaration of pride in expression summed up by the lines, "hold yr head like it was a ruby sapphire/i'm a poet who writes in english/come to share worlds with you."

although I respect and applaud Janet for her acting skills and successful acting career I do quite honestly find her film projects quite 'niche' in the sense that she is tending to only be in films of the same genre, unlike her brother who was very much intergrated in his music and his message.

If Tyler Perry is involved, it'll probably be ghetto.

I have to say I agree with you.
I've seen the play ( For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf) the movie was based on, and the subject matter is beyond depressing; and it was totally meant for live theatre.

"The final group of poems includes the dramatic Night with Beau Willie Brown, an abusive, drunken Vietnam vet who takes his children from their mother and drops them to their deaths from a fifth-floor window. The final poem in the piece is entitled laying on of the hands, a poem that affirms life despite the losses, abuses, and rejection they have experienced: the poem ends with the lady-in-reds memorable line: I found god in myself & I loved her fiercely.

Shange s work has been criticized for its stark, unsympathetic portrayals of black men and its use of profanity, but it has moved and electrified audiences from its first performances in a women s bar in California to its award-winning run on Broadway precisely because of its uncompromising point of view. Her combination of strong language, imaginative staging, and decisively pro-woman stance was revolutionary when this play first ran, and continues to influence black women s drama and literature today."

I, personally, don't want to see the stories told by the women in
the play on the big screen broadcast around the world, because
Black men are portrayed as very low-life creatures without any
withdemptive qualities.

Currently, young black American men have the highest unemployment and highest school drop out rate, homicide
and incarciration rate. Black men are the most likely group
to be shot dead in the street by police.
Young black men could easily become extinct.

This is not the portrayal of young black American men needed at this time. With all his money Tyler Perry should use his talent to try to find some way to help lift young black men up. Young black American men really, really, really, desperately need help, not another sterotypical expliotative Hollywood portrayal.
God Help us all.

Some African American men perpetrate this image themselves. Listen to the average popular rap tune and music video which reaches more people than this movie will. This is basically a movie geared toward an American female audience, mainly a black one, just like Precious. I don't see this movie as being released internationally.

Wow I'm deffenliy going to see this movie when it comes out! & I'm going to be the first one to see it!!! & Janet looks so good on that movie poster!!! Yes indeed!!!

well thank you for posting this...Janet does look wonderful....maybe I will give the movie a try...it might be good...I guess I will have to see it and find out.

Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls Film Heads to Theaters November 5

Tyler Perry's film adaptation of Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf will hit theaters on November 5, according to Variety. The movie was originally scheduled for a January 2011 release. The film features a slew of stage veterans including Tony winners Whoopi Goldberg, Anika Noni Rose and Phylicia Rashad as well as Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Macy Gray and Tessa Thompson.

Originally staged as a series of 20 "choreopoems" centering on the life stories of a group of African-American women, For Colored Girls opened at the Public Theater on May 17, 1976, and transferred to Broadway’s Booth Theatre on September 10, running until July 16, 1978. It was nominated for a 1977 Best Play Tony Award and earned a Best Featured Actress Tony for star Trazana Beverley. The PBS American Playhouse series broadcast the play in 1982 with a cast that included Beverley, Alfre Woodard and Lynn Whitfield.

I hope she sticks with her new found motto ' No Michael questions'

STOP IT, JUST STOP IT!!

Janet answered unavoidable questions about Michael cause it was during the promo of a movie she was filming around the time of his death. The scenes in that movie (WDIGMT) are very signifigant as she is acting out her frustrations over his death, therefore it is a relevant point for interviewers to bring it up.
This film has nothing to do with Michael, so SHUT UP, and support it, cause its got lots of respectable actresses. There wont be mention of michael in new promo CAUSE there is nothing in this movie relevant to him. Get a grip!

Sorry, but in my opinion, UNLESS Janet says upfront that she will NOT be answering any questions regarding Michael, that will be the FIRST question she is asked, i.e. "it's been a year since Michael's death, how are you doing."

Oh and she will ALSO have to say the samething regarding Michael's children. Because, in my opinion, that will be the SECOND question she is asked, i.e. "Michael's 2 older children are in school now, how are they adjusting."

The media will ALWAYS be interested in Michael's children, so if you don't want to answer those types of questions, you will definitely have to say upfront: "no questions regarding [fill in the blank], otherwise the media will ask EVERYTIME they have a mic-in-hand and a Jackson family member in front of that mic.
