Judge: Documents In Jackson Child Custody Dispute To Be Filed In Court

LOS ANGELES -- All original documents in the child custody dispute between entertainer Michael Jackson and ex-wife Deborah Rowe Jackson must be filed at a downtown Los Angeles courthouse, a judge ruled Wednesday.
The order by Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider means documents that had been filed with the private judge hearing the case will now be open for public review, according to Marci Koch, an attorney for the celebrity Web site TMZ.com
"It's important for the public to see every case, regardless of who the defendant may be," Koch said.
Deborah Jackson, the mother of two of Jackson's children, was granted a divorce in October 1999 after three years of marriage. They couple hired retired Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Lachs in 2004 to hear their case in a private office.
Lachs later took himself off the case, and it was referred back to the downtown Los Angeles courthouse before Schnider.
Koch said Schnider's ruling clarifies an apparent misunderstanding by attorneys representing the singer and his ex-wife that only a few documents had to be filed in the courthouse.
Koch said some of the court papers have been filed directly in the courthouse and have been available to the public. But she said she does not know if they represent the majority or minority of the total number of documents filed in the case.
Among the documents that have been kept from the public are papers filed in December that have something to do with allegations of child abduction, Koch said.
Schnider told Jackson attorney Michael Abrams that the lawyers can still request that part or all of some documents be filed under seal and kept from the public, but that they will have to be reviewed by the court for a final determination.
Schnider set a July 26 hearing to see if all of the court papers have been filed in the courthouse.
In another development, Abrams said he is asking the California Supreme Court to overrule a state appeals court decision in February that Lachs had not properly terminated Deborah Jackson's parental rights.
Lachs had given the singer sole custody of the couple's children, Prince Michael and Paris.
The pop star also has another child, Prince Michael II, whom he infamously dangled over a balcony at a hotel in Berlin. The boy's mother has not been revealed.
