Today in Michael Jackson History March 10th

HISTORICAL DATES

1978 - The Jacksons attend the First Annual Rock 'N' Roll Sports Classic.

1983 - MTV played "Billie Jean" for the first time and forever changed the course of its music programming in the process. MTV's playlist was 99 percent white until Michael Jackson forced his way on the air by making the best music videos anyone had ever seen, "It's not enough to say the Thriller videos forced MTV to integrate," Tannenbaum co-author of I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution, insisted. "Michael Jackson helped save the network from being shut down. MTV executives had expected to lose $10 million before they showed a profit. The network quickly lost $50 million, and its parent company was prepared to shut down MTV and call it quits. Jackson's three Thriller videos came out in 1983. In the first three months of 1984, MTV had their first quarterly profit. Ironically, MTV was rescued from failure by a musician who didn't fit the channel's original 'rock 'n' roll-only' format."

1988 - The "United Negro College Fund" presents Michael with Fisk University’s "Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree" and the Frederick D. Patterson Award at the Sheraton Hotel in New York City, N.Y., honoring the entertainer’s continued commitments to "UNCF" , towards alleviating world hunger, his help of terminally ill children and his inspirational example to the youth of America. In 1986, Michael Jackson donated $1.5 million to UNCF to establish a scholarship endowment, The Michael Jackson Scholarship—a fund. Then Earlier in March Jackson presented the UNCF's CEO with 600,000 dollars from a benefit concert he held at Madison Square Garden.

President Henry Ponder of Fisk University praises Jackson and his relief contributions on handing the degree over to him: “As though your special gift and talent was not sufficient, you have sought to make the world a better place through many humanitarian and philanthropic efforts including “We Are The World”, a song you co-wrote with Lionel Richie. You touched the hearts of hundreds of millions of people and spurred international efforts to eradicate world hunger.” President Reagan's recorded congratulations was also played at the event: “Michael, I’m sorry that Nancy and I could not be with you for this very special day, but I want to congratulate you for the honors you are receiving tonight from the United Negro College Fund and the honorary degree awarded you by Fisk University. Let me be the first to call you the new Dr.“J.” ~ Ronald Reagan. Among the quests were , Katherine and Joseph Jackson, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, Yoko Ono, Elizabeth Taylor & Liza Minnelli, CBS Record's president walter Yetnikoff.

1996 - 'The Daily News' reports: "Michael Jackson is King Of Cyberspace. His elecrtronic chat with fans last year attracted a record 6,000 participants, and his name appears on more than 6,000 Net home pages. That means more than 6,000 users have set up sites on the Net where browsers can find information about the superstar. Bill Clinton is second, with over 5,500. "

2007 - Michael Jackson greeted U.S. troops and their family members March 10 at Camp Zama, Army base south of Tokyo, taking a break from days of parties with die-hard fans and well-heeled business people. About 3,000 troops and their family members gathered at a fitness center at Camp Zama. Michael received a certificate of appreciation from Col. Robert M. Waltemeyer, garrison commander to thank him for visiting the service members, their families, and U.S. civilian and Japanese national employees at Camp Zama, Japan. A lucky soldier had the honor of Michael pinning his medal. Jackson also read a short statement thanking them for their service: “Those of you in here today are some of the most special people in the world, It is because of you in here today, and others who so valiantly have given their lives to protect us, that we enjoy our freedom.” The Army was very grateful and proud Michael came to visit and released a video of the Event.

2011 - The video for "Hollywood Tonight" a single released from the MICHAEL Album premiered.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"An education opens a person's mind to the entire world and there is
nothing more important than to make sure everyone has the opportunity
for an education... To want to learn, to have the capacity to learn and
not be able to is a tragedy
."

~ Michael Jackson

:clap:Michael's words about how important an education is--wow!!!! beautiful!!!:clap::clap:

Beautiful. Anyone knows what number in the set list is the History song above? Has the History jacket been auctioned yet? Everytime I see clips from the History tour, I wish we could have a concert. To me it is one of the tours with the most creative wardrobe.

History was the last song performed in the concerts. John Branca said he is planning on releasing a History concert on DVD. I believe he said Munich but not for certain on that. The reason I used the song "History" for Song of the day was because of the notable Historical events in today's MJ in History :)

^^Thanks Qbee about the set list. Great that a History dvd will be something to look forward to in the future.
It seems to me that Michael looks as thin in 07 as he did in TII.

I added another important Historical date and video to March 10th Today MJ In History

1983 -

"Ironically, MTV was rescued from failure by a musician who didn't fit the channel's original 'rock 'n' roll-only' format." Of course that would be the case since it is Michael Jackson we are talking about. He is individualistic & never settles into one "specific format." Michael creates new things, not settle & becomes a part of what already exists. That is why he is the King.

Added more historical content above. I find more when 'Im searching for daily historical events.

Of course these numbers are low compared to today, but back then before twitter and facebook etc etc it was very significant.

1996 -

^^Michael was also king of the internet. I am finding out so much more about Michael than I expected.
