The Premiere of Kanye West shortfilm: runaway

Yes, the float was a float of Michael. I don't know, but I really enjoyed this short film, it's no Thriller, or Smooth Criminal, or even Ghosts, but the imagery used in the video, the setting, everything just fit. Despite of his actions, you can't deny Kanye's talent and eye for art, as far as videos in 2010 goes, this is fantastic.
 
I don't like Kanye but I must admit this was fantastic. I really liked it.

I'll watch this when I get some time. Been curious about it since I heard he was doing it.
 
I really liked it, especially the ballet and showing homage to the King of Pop. Way way better than Gaga's "Telephone", that's for sure.

Did anyone else notice how white people were serving at the table? I LOL'ed. :lol:

'Runaway' Solidifies Kanye West As The Greatest Pop Star Of This Generation

On Saturday night (October 23), Kanye West let loose his new short film "Runaway" in a special broadcast on MTV. "Runaway" is a 35-minute opus starring himself and model Selita Ebanks. In the film, Ebanks plays a phoenix (as in the mythical creature) who crashes to Earth and gets saved by West (who plays a vaguely fictionalized version of himself). The two strike up a relationship that ultimately ends in tragedy. Along the way, the film tosses out all sorts of gorgeously rendered scenes and a handful of mind-bending tracks from West's hotly-anticipated upcoming album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

In fact, the greatness of the music and the stunning quality of the film (combined with West's back catalog and his previous success in the music video realm) have solidified West as unquestionably the greatest pop star of this generation. His music has appealed to hip-hop fans, pop aficionados and rock enthusiasts alike, and his approach to video, fashion and public image have made him an instantly recognizable and unique singularity. His work is constantly evolving, and he has managed to be good at just about everything he has ever tried. And he has consistently gone out on a limb, attempting things that are way outside of his comfort zone. It's even a little obscene to think about West as a "hip-hop producer" at this point, as while that is certainly the universe that gave him his start, he has evolved way, way past that world.

And the great thing is that West doesn't just rely on his incredible talent — he also puts in hard work and takes on challenges. When MTV News' Sway asked West about the challenges of making "Runaway," he was up front about everything he had to confront. "Thinking about dressing all of those people. Or finding where the [phoenix] wings were, who would make the wings. Laying the colors, having to go back and forth. Directing myself, 'cause I can make awesome decisions right there," West said. "But when I stand on that piano [in the 'Runaway' scene], I got to make sure Kyle, who is an amazing [director of photography] on this, I got to trust him that he caught that shot the proper way. So it takes a little bit longer, when you have to go around and get behind the camera. So these shots, I would have to go look at it, do it again, look at it again. I had a number of concerns: Is it realistic? Are we getting a good angle? We didn't have Hype Williams-level lighting in that warehouse."

So take a look at West's "Runaway" and try to keep your jaw off the floor. Whether you like it or not, know that you are witnessing the most important pop star of the current generation. He has managed to take popular music and, just like Michael Jackson, Radiohead and others before him, turn it completely on its head while still bringing the rest of the world along with him.
 
I watched it earlier and really liked it. Can see 'All of the Lights' being an absolutly massive hit, althhough the MJ reference at the beginning of the song threw me a bit. Always good to see some tributing to the King but this is a great short film.
 
It looks like a homemade video for a school project using a HD video camera..., nothing special, and this is compared to Thriller? or Ghosts?

GEEE ... I am sure I could make a better videofilm....
 
I liked the video, it was compelling, I watched it till the end. Much different from "Telephone" where I felt a constant urge to click the video away. That said, I can't stand Kanye's music (or any hip-hop for that matter) but I kinda liked that "All of the Lights" song (was that Rihanna singing? I think so). I don't know if I would classify this as "art" per se, but at least it was original. I personally have never seen a rapper making love to a bird in a music video. The girl looked beautiful btw. I still don't get the MJ reference though; was it positive or negative? First impression was that it was negative cause of the combination of MJ and those KKK-like figures so I thought maybe he's implying that MJ was a racist (in light of those skin-bleaching rumours) but then I heard Kanye is a big MJ fan himself so idk..

Exactly........it looks sooooo cheap...........


........I've see amateur short films that look more expensive then this!!!!

Yeah I liked it, but I only watched it because its Kanye's and it's been anticipated. But it's not something I'd go back and watch again though. I reckon the Michael float looked cute and happy.
 
Btw, didn't they say this video was gonna beat Ghosts as the longest music video ever? I checked again and this video is "only" 34:32 minutes long while Ghosts is 39:31 minutes :unsure:
