Why does The Media feel the need to try and bring down celebrity's all the time whenever that celebrity gets a little bit sucessfull? Let's take Michael Jackson for an example here, when he started breaking music records and when Thriller became the biggest selling album of all time the media called him weired, a freak, said he bleeched his skin etc. The media basicly tried everything in their power to turn the general public againts Michael Jackson and why is that? The Media can't handle anyone getting some success so they feel the need to try and bring them down

The Same thing is happening with Will Smith right now. Ever since Will Smith have become one of the biggest movie starts in the world and have started breaking box office records the media is saying that Will Smith is a Scientologist and that he loves Hitler and none of those stories are true. Again this is the media doing everything in thier power to try and turn the general public againts Will Smith and other people who get some success

because people actually pay attention and money to watch them do it. among many things, we are also a sadistic and jealous race.

In a way I agree with arXer, but it is a very complex thing. One of the factors is that our media world has grown out of proportion, and "news" has become "infotainment". Another factor is that media/ propaganda has always been used to influence people.
But the reason why people by it? Jelousy, the satisfaction it gives that someone sucessful fails ( keeps people looking at that instead of their own life), but most of all I think its about people that are successful and powerful are so far away from "ordinary lifes", that people in general loose their natural ability to feel emphaty.
And not to forget the "bullying factor". People are not either good or bad; they are good AND bad. And its a never ending battle......If people accept that in themself, its harder to gloat when it comes to others mistakes.

On the uside: people in general has lost faith in journalists. The trust towards journalists are about the same level as when it comes to politicians ( who in fact changed the laws so the media became the monster it is today). Kind of ironic..................

You talk so much sense. I wish you would post more often:D

It's all for the money...

They first lift a person to stardom
bring them down
and if they try to get up, they will first kick them.. But if it does not work, they will ride the co-tales for a COMEBACK..

there is a reason why 'the rise to glory', the 'fall of a hero' and 'the comeback kid' are the 3 most sucessfull movie themes.. IT SELLS..

Now that they tried to bring him down.. They will try to kick him when he comes back. But when that is not sucessfull they will praise and raise him again.. WATCH..

It's human nature to be jealous of those better than you. It makes sense when they bring successful people down because it makes the 'average joe' feel better about themselves.

Thank you Datsy:)

But my spelling is horrible..........:eek::lol:

I have been thinking about this lately: seems to me that we want to deny our bad sides, or what we think of as "bad" emotions ( anger, jelousy, insecurites, fear etc......). But they are there for a reason, its part of our "survival kit".Jelousy is there to tell us that we desire something, that we want something more- its an opportunity to find out what we want. I think many people seem to think that feeling jealous is sutch a bad thing, so instead of taking time to find out what that emotion tells them, they supress it- and then it comes out in another and even more harmful way. And maybe thats the reason why people are so interested in gossip as well- as taking their bad feelings out on people far away. living lifes they can not realy relate to is less shameful then envying you brother, or your sister, or anyone else close to you.

I'm telling you it's about what SELLS, what will get RATINGS.. And a little of re-writting history..

It's not that they are jelouse of the hights he as a musician reached.. It's how high MICHAEL JACKSON reached..

They try to re-right history to make it seem like Michael is a large artist but not in the line for the LARGEST..

They praise the Beatles, and Elvis..

U go to a memorabelia store, a store collector store, or pratically anywhere.. U will see Elvis and Beatles stuff everywhere..

So that shows it's not about just jelousy of sucess.. It's an agenda towards MICHAEL as an individual.

On the news OFTEN we hear them compare Elvis/Beatles world sales, then say Michaels U.S. sales.. That way people that know cannot say they are lying, but they mis-guide people on purpose..

This is why many MJ fans get bothered to see praise for Elvis and the Beatles, it's not that they are bad.. It's that the media uses them to over shadow Michael for the purpose of re-writting history.

When discussing Michaels case, there are more complex issues then jealusy.
But when it comes to "common gossip" about successful people, I think the reason why people buy it, and why people sell it may be slightly different.
The people publishing this stories are mainly focused on money- but its the publics interest that gives them a market.
And, then you have the people who publish stories that has another agenda, and when it comes to Michael its a bit of both, I think.

What I said earlier, is my thoughts aboy why people buy it. Because as long as there is a market for it, people will publish and sell it. Witch is the reason why Michael say "burn the tabloids", I guess.....................
