Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones honor Michael Jackson in the new version of ‘We Are the World’
LOS ANGELES — The late Michael Jackson has a prominent role in the revamped version of “We Are the World.”
Lionel Richie, who wrote the original charity anthem with Jackson, says the King of Pop can be seen in the new video for the track, singing with his sister Janet.
“We left the original footage of that part, but now he is singing with his sister,” Richie said.
“It’s something we wanted to see, but his mother requested it too, for Janet to sing with Michael,” said Quincy Jones, who produced the original track and helped orchestrate the re-recording. “It was perfect. It was meant to be.”
The video is set to make its debut Friday during coverage of the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics. “We Are the World — 25 for Haiti” features 80 artists, including Pink, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Kanye West and Jennifer Hudson.
Proceeds from sales of the song will benefit earthquake recovery efforts in Haiti.

Howard Weitzman, the attorney representing John Branca and John McClain, Special Administrators for the Estate of the late superstar Michael Jackson, released a statement Monday following Dr. Conrad Murray’s appearance in court.
“Sadly, today’s events are a painful reminder of Michael’s untimely passing last June 25 and the deep personal loss we continue to share with his fans, his friends, and especially his family and children,” the statement says. “We hope justice will be done. During the years the world was blessed to have known him, Michael chose to use his gifts and artistry to give people hope, to comfort those in need and to spread messages of unity and peace. Because of that legacy he left behind, we believe that in years to come Michael will be remembered far more for the remarkable things he did with his life than for the tragedy of his death.”
Judge Schwartz also placed limitations on Murray's medical practice, ruling that he can't use or prescribe any anesthetic or Propofol. He also barred Murray from giving any heavy sedation meds. Murray can prescribe anxiety medications. The limitations are in place anywhere Murray is licensed to practice.
As RadarOnline.com previously reported Murray was arraigned Monday at LAX Court in Los Angeles and charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the the death of his former patient. Murray pleaded not guilty and was released on $75,000 bail.
Following the DA’s concerns that Murray may be a flight risk, Judge Keith Schwartz ruled that Murray's passport must be turned over, but didn't place travel restrictions within the US.

TN Senate rejects Michael Jackson resolution
NASHVILLE - Michael Jackson has joined Justin Timberlake in failing to meet the Tennessee Senate's standards for an honoring resolution.
The resolution honoring the late pop superstar received only seven votes in favor and six against. Measures need at least 17 votes to pass the state's upper chamber.
The Senate vote on the resolution sponsored by Democratic Sen. Beverly Marrero of Memphis came a week after the resolution passed the House with one vote to spare. Lawmakers there noted that Jackson was once married to Lisa Marie Presley of Memphis, so he was Elvis' son-in-law.
The Senate in 2007 declined to honor Timberlake, a Tennessee native from outside Memphis, because his lyrics were too racy.
More details as they develop online and in Friday's News Sentinel.
