For once, almost 200 girls at a St. Paul school don't have to wear their uniforms--instead, today they look like zombies and some are dressed like the late Michael Jackson and even actor Vincent Price.

The middle school girls from Laura Jeffrey Academy ended their 2nd quarter of school by reenacting the dance from Michael Jackson's thriller song. The 5th through 8th graders performed in a ballroom at nearby Macalester College, with parents watching.

Operations Manager Sally Spreeman says students usually mark the end of each quarter with a performance or exhibit of their work. The girls learned the dance moves from an online dance instructor. Then they worked with their art teacher to do the drama component and makeup, she says.

While the school focuses on science, technology, engineering and math, Spreeman says the curriculum is "art infused," which means the kids take an art and choir class every day on top of the academics.

Laura Jeffrey Academy is a tuition-free, year-round, public charter school at Summit and Snelling Avenue in St. Paul.
