The Day Shaq Showed Michael Jackson His Bed

The basketball star knew that the King of Pop almost bought his house. What he didn’t expect was for Michael to pop in for a visit.

Back in the day: O'Neal and Jackson

Like most people of my generation, I grew up idolizing Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five. Their dance moves, afros, and hip costumes—everything about them—were the coolest things my friends and I had ever seen. I mean who didn’t want Michael’s red leather jacket from “Thriller”? I sure did. Even though my family spent a great deal of the ’80s in Germany with my military father, there was no way you could miss Michael and his shiny glove or his famous dance, the moonwalk. I could do the moonwalk better than anyone in my class in Germany. The world loved him and so did I.

When we did arrive back in the United States during the mid-’80s, Michael was the undisputed King of Pop, and my brother, sisters, and I ate it up. We watched every one of his videos from the album Thriller with laserlike focus, analyzing his every move so we could re-create them in our living room. “Beat It” was pretty much our family anthem, since we listened to it and sang it so much. After I entered the NBA and got drafted by the Orlando Magic, I went to purchase a house and wanted one on the lake in Florida. The real-estate agent told me he had the perfect house for me and that Michael Jackson had been interested in buying it as well. I actually bought it.

One day out of the blue, there was knock on the door and when I opened it—there stood the King of Pop in all his glory. I’m rarely without something to say, but on that day and at that moment I was speechless. He wanted to see what I’d done with the place (LOL), so I took him on a tour. As you might expect, he loved my recording studio and couldn’t get over my round Superman bed that fits 45 people. He thought it was the coolest thing he’d ever seen. Having just gotten a taste of fame myself, I was really surprised by how normal and kind he was. I could tell he really enjoyed just hanging out and talking for a while about basketball and other stuff going on with me. He liked just being a regular guy for a moment.

Since he was so nice, I asked him to hang around a little longer so my youngest sister, Ayesha, could come over to meet him. She loved Michael on an entirely different level and would have killed me if I hadn’t held him there for her. He stayed, and it was probably one of the best days of our lives. He came back to visit another time with Lisa Marie Presley. She loved my Superman bed, too! A couple years later, when I became a Los Angeles Laker, Michael invited me to Neverland for the day. Again, I was speechless. To go to someone’s house that had a zoo and roller coaster was surreal. I was more excited than any of the kids there. I had a ball and so did Michael.

As my career became more hectic, it wasn’t as easy to spend time with him, but we kept in touch over the years through friends and associates. His death really hit me and my family hard because he’d been so much a part of our lives before we’d ever even met him. My youngest son, Shaquir, who is just 7, cried his eyes out when he heard he’d passed away. Michael was the most amazing performer of my lifetime and, for me personally, an inspiration and a friend.

Shaq's Bed

That was a nice read...the Superman bed...lol funny. Doesn't surprise me.

that bed fits forty five people...or Shaq, comfortably. cool bed. and i like the 2bad song he and Michael did together. so, they really had a connection. i like the design of the room and window around that bed.

Thank you SOOO much for posting that...I love Shaq.....that was a great story....Michael loved the superman bed......I am not surprised....Michael was superman. I am so happy that the two of them got to relax and talk basketball....Michael couldn't trust many people....but Shaq...I know he could trust.. Kudos to you shaq.

Great read, thanks so much for posting! :)

It's so nice to hear actual heartfelt recollections of times spent with Michael. Shaq sounds honest in his interview. I really appreciate that.

The superman bed has got to be one of the coolest beds I have ever seen, I must add.

really nice things he said. (still can't ever root for him in nba ;))

Maybe Jon Bon Jovi have a Superman bed too, lol. He has a Superman tattoo I think. Cool article.

Thank you for this lovely article by Shaq. I am a fan of Shaq and reading how much he loved Michael and how they were friends warms my heart.

I remember reading that Shaquille (Shaq) O'Neal wasn't in the studio with Michael when he recorded his rap for '2 Bad.' They recorded their vocals separately and engineers mixed them later. The article insinuated that Shaq exaggerated the level of his friendship with Michael.

Loved reading that.....this is the kinda story I wish more people would tell about MJ.

Great story..I enjoyed reading it. wish we could hear more stories like this.
Thanks for posting. :flowers:

Shaq's hosting a Michael Jackson-themed kids' holiday bash

While buying Christmas presents for kids to benefit Toys for Tots last month, Shaquille O'Neal(notes) teased his next big public happening. "Oh, coming soon, in a mall nearby, bring your kids to take a picture with Shaq-a-Claus," Shaq told NESN I made some jokes about the Boston Celtics center being a sketchy Santa, you had some laughs, and it was a really fun time for all of us.

That open-to-the-public mall appearance may still be in the works, but according to Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa of the Boston Herald's Inside Track gossip column, "Shaq-a Claus" will throw a holiday party for some young Bostonians on Tuesday. And it sounds like it could wind up being pret-tay dope:

[We hear that] Celtics big-hearted Big Guy Shaquille O'Neal will play Shaq-A-Claus on Tuesday when he straps on the red suit and hat and ho-ho-hos it down to Dedham to treat 75 kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Roxbury to a holiday party at the brand-new Buca di Beppo [restaurant]. Shaq, wearing one glove, will challenge the kids to a dance-moves contest with the just-released Ubisoft video game "Michael Jackson: The Experience." Ha! Wonder if he's got his "Thriller" moves down yet?

Shaq does quite a bit of kid-focused charity and community work, so this isn't shocking at all, but it's pretty rad all the same. It's also cool that he's sharing his love of the King of Pop with the kids — as Shaq told Newsweek after Jackson's 2009 death, he "grew up idolizing Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five," and the two became friends after the Orlando Magic drafted O'Neal out of LSU in 1992. In 1998, they even worked on a track together — "We Be Ballin'," a remix of the 1997 Ice Cube single "We Be Clubbin'," which was apparently intended for an NBA compilation album and the NBA's "I Love This Game" commericals but was never completed (although demos of the cut have floated around the Internet).

The only thing that would make this Michael Jackson video game-themed holiday party starring Shaquille O'Neal dressed as Santa Claus more fun would be if Vince Carter(notes) tagged along. I hear that guy's pretty into "Bad" himself.
