Have lots of preparation.

You should also have a planned escape route or routes. Extra fuel on hand for your vehicle, I think I've read 5 gallons is a good idea. Also if you have pets or animals of any sort you need to think about them, too. And self defense must also be considered.
And if you do have a disaster kit, check it periodically and update it!
