Dancers Emulate Michael Jackson for Charity Event with Late Singer's Mother in Attendance

</aside>In Gary to celebrate the life of her youngest son, the late Michael Jackson, with the sixth annual Michael Jackson I Can't Stop Loving You charity event, she watched with interest as dancers emulated every step of his best-known routines.

The event — also a school-supply giveaway for Gary students — kicks off a weekend devoted to Gary's most famous native son a week before what would have been his 57th birthday.

Vanessa Pereira, Jasmina Maamesi and Jenny Fulimani, of the Malibu Fan Club from Germany, didn't sleep a wink upon arrival in the states Thursday. On Friday morning, the trio saw the house in which the Jacksons lived on Jackson Street and couldn't get over how small it is.
"It's crazy to see where it all began," Fulimani said. "How did they all manage?"

GARY | What started as a memorial for one of Gary's favorite sons has turned into an annual party celebrating his life.

The sixth annual I Can't Stop Loving You Charity Weekend kicked off Friday afternoon at the Genesis Convention Center, bringing a mix of music, dancing and games. The free event is presented by Katherine Jackson, mother of Gary native Michael Jackson, the late King of Pop. Activities continue at noon Saturday at the center.

Aside from entertainment, the event focused on distributing backpacks and school supplies to children in need within the community.

The annual gathering takes place around Jackson's Aug. 29 birthday. It draws people to Gary from all over the country, including Linda McHard, of Iowa City, Iowa.

Dressed in a black T-shirt emblazoned in a sparkly rhinestone silhouette of Jackson, McHard bragged about the late entertainer the way a mother boasts about a child.

"When he danced, it was like watching God's feet dancing," she said. "He was an amazing talent."

She paused and turned to the blond-haired boy who was spinning and moonwalking to a horn-heavy instrumental version of Jackson's "Dirty Diana."

"This is Willie," she said. "He's 8 years old."

A third-grader at Reavis Elementary School in his hometown of Lansing, Willie "Willie the Entertainer" Osborn won the dance contest at this event last year, and videos of his moves have earned Internet acclaim.

"That's what we need," McHard said of Willie. "Is this generation to honor Michael, to keep that legacy alive."

Georgia Current, of Oglesby, Ill., became friends with McHard and other fans at the first Jackson-themed "fan-vention" in 2010 in Merrillville.

Current sported a red and black leather jacket similar to the design Jackson wore in his "Thriller" video.

"I ordered this online straight from China," she said. "It took six months to get delivered."

That type of enthusiasm was rampant at Friday's event, as many people wore T-shirts imprinted with pictures of Jackson's face and album covers. They sang, danced and spun. They emulated his moves, his sequins and his white socks/black shoes signature look.

Dressed in a gold sequin jacket and ready to perform was Angel Diaz, a teen singer and dancer from El Paso, Texas, who sings a song called "Like Mike," a tribute to Jackson.

Talent scout Big Mike Robinson emceed the event, joined by Diamond Strawberry of VH1's "Love & Hip Hop."

The doors opened to the public about 40 minutes later than advertised Friday, which drew frustration from at least one person in line.

Gary resident Shilon Cunningham, who had her 3-year-old son with her, said she was upset for the inconvenience because it was hot outside and she had been waiting since 10 a.m.

NWI reports that the event, known as the I Can&#8217;t Stop Loving You Charity Event, featured an array of festivities and musical concerts at Gary, Indiana&#8217;s Genesis Convention Center. Although the charity is a celebration of Jackson&#8217;s August 29 birth date, a spokeswoman for the event, Mel Moore, stated it was held a week earlier since Katherine wanted it to coincide with school starting back.

Starting the event a week early gives the Jackson family a chance to help out needy children with supplies before they return to their classes. Moore indicated that Katherine wanted to make sure the children had their necessary supplies prior to walking into school.

&#8220;With Michael Jackson being a legend and being from Gary, Mrs. Jackson wants to give back to the community. The children of Gary were very important to him.&#8221;

Among the items given to children included school supplies, backpacks, and other necessary essentials. Jackson&#8217;s three children, Prince, Paris, and Blanket, were on hand to give out the supplies to the children. Over 20 Jackson family members attended.

I'll say this for Prince-he really is so charming, sweet and personable-he's the first one organizing the family pix and he's the first one to run to the fence to greet the fans-he doesn't act like it's a "duty", but that he's happy to do it. He's the epitome of a devoted son. I'm proud of him.
