Ottoman princess to bring Jermaine Jackson to İstanbul for charity project
İstanbul had a royal visit last week. Princess Nilüfer Cem Sultan visited the city as a guest of internationally famous fashion designer Atıl Kutoğlu -- to attend his İstanbul Fashion Week show.
Nilüfer Sultan is the granddaughter of 31st sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Abdülmecid I.
The princess, a very chic lady, says her favorite “thing in life is children, not fashion.”
Nilüfer Sultan helps children with health problems through her organization the HIH Princess Nilüfer Association in Memory of Her Daughter Princess Tatiana. Her daughter, Princess Tatiana, died at age 17 from lung disease.
Recently, Nilüfer Sultan has been working on a project to help children who sit at the sharp end of the Israel-Palestine conflict. The princess hopes to bring Israeli and Palestinian orphans from the war-torn territory together – most likely in Switzerland, where she resides – to receive education and learn the value of coexistence.
“I am trying to bring peace. By bringing a few children together in Switzerland, Jews and Muslims may learn to live together. When they go back, perhaps they become future leaders, but with normal minds -- and not completely opposed to each other,” Nilüfer Sultan explained.
The princess is working to raise money for the project. In an effort to kick-start the fundraising drive, Nilüfer Sultan, with the support of volunteers, plans to host a ball featuring Michael Jackson’s brother Jermaine Jackson – whose family is known for its charitable deeds.
Nilüfer Sultan first met with Jackson at meeting in the US addressing education gaps between countries.
She attended the meeting as a speaker, on the recommendation of her close friend Daphna Ziman, founder of Children Uniting Nations – an NGO specializing in academic advocacy.
Sultan says the meeting helped her expand her humanitarian network and despite not representing an official body – unlike other speakers who were representing governments – her speech was valued as much as any others.
“Mrs. Ziman said: ‘Princess Nilüfer, you help Israeli and Palestinian children. Could you please come because Hillary Clinton needs a person like you from Turkey who is American.’
“We were both born in California and we connected through a friend two years ago. I am happy that I attended the meeting because I talked about Turkey and realized the impact the country makes – as I tend to stay out of politics. I spoke for 20 minutes. When I met Jermaine, I was introduced as an Ottoman princess. He immediately told me that he loved Turkey. His wife said she had never been to Turkey but wanted to go. It was a very fortunate meeting,” Nilüfer Sultan added.
The association plans to hold the fund-raising ball at Yıldız Palace in İstanbul. Jermaine Jackson will contribute a performance at the ball, which is expected to take place in around two months and which Nilüfer Sultan hopes will raise $200,000.
The money will go towards the project’s expenses, including the salaries of nannies who can speak Hebrew and Arabic. Initially 20 children – 10 Palestinian and 10 Jewish – will take part in the three-month program. The princess also noted that she will attend another US meeting in September where she expects to meet US President Barack Obama and his wife Michele Obama, in an event at the Turkish Embassy in Washington.
Princess Nilüfer is an ambassador for an anti-aging cream produced by Swiss dermatologist Harald Gerny. She has been using the cream for four years like her mother. The princess is opposed to Botox and plastic surgery.
“I am opposed to Botox treatment and surgery. I prefer taking this cream and being comfortable with who I am. After surgery, the face sags. My mother and I started using the cream at the same time. It cured her hands of sunspots. She will turn 82 in a few days, and her hands look wonderful,” she explained.
The princess met Gerny at a cocktail party where the skin-care specialist and entrepreneur asked her to be an ambassador for his products. “He said, ‘Do you like my cream?’ and I said, ‘Very much.’ I didn’t know it was him at first,” she added.
And so another project came up for the princess, aside from all the humanitarian work: she is looking for Turkish distributor for the anti-aging cream. “I want to help people avoid surgery. You can rejuvenate your face with this cream and avoid invasive surgery. It is also less expensive.”
