noel gallagher says he has quit oasis - claiming he could not go on working with brother liam "a day longer".

The announcement came just hours after the band cancelled their second gig in a week.

In a statement on the band's website, noel said: "it's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that i quit oasis tonight.

"people will write and say what they like, but i simply could not go on working with liam a day longer.

"apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in paris, konstanz and milan."

the band were expected to perform at the rock en seine festival in paris this evening.

But the crowd were told by bloc party, who were due to perform before oasis, the manchester band would not be taking the stage.

Some fans thought it was a joke - until the big screens at either side of the stage displayed the message: "as a result of an altercation within the band, the oasis gig has been cancelled."

ben clover, 28, who travelled from south london for the festival, said: "there are a lot of british oasis fans who have come over for this gig and they are very disappointed."

last weekend oasis pulled out of the v festival in chelmsford, which they were meant to headline.

The band cancelled because front man liam was struck down with viral laryngitis.

But their non-appearance sparked rumours they were set to split.

Earlier this month liam revealed his turbulent relationship with noel was so bad that they no longer speak, limiting their contact to exchanging insults on twitter.

Liam told the nme: "he doesn't like me and i don't like him, that's it.

"he hasn't told me what he thinks of anything this year. We've got nothing to say to each other at the moment."

oasis fans have taken to twitter to express their dismay at noel's departure.

Psychedelicadam said: "noel gallagher leaves oasis? Gutted, no more oasis then i guess, they were one of my favourite bands."

wolvolass posted: "i feel sick, sooo many good memories and gigs seeing oasis over the years."

mattgriffin added: "this is the worst day ever."

i can't believe it! :(

I didn't know they were still together. When was the last time these two were relevant?

Aaahh!! Noel - spread the brotherly love around mate.

My brother was at V Festival last week which they were supposed to be headlining, but cancelled at the last minute.
He said "he's like a man with only a fork in a world full of soup!"

SORT IT OUT GUYS!!!

That comment now no longer makes you relevant!

Oasis are absolute legends! Theyve done Manchester proud for years! Sad, sad day in the world of music.

ive gotta feeling this is for real. It has happened before but this time seems more serious :(

I feel sorry for their fans, but personally I can not stand them, to me they come across as horrible rude people, and I only like one of their songs (wonderwall)... so for me it's no big loss...

They'll get back together again no doubt.

This is like the 3rd time they've split :D

Damnn that sucks , they aren't much of a band anyway without Noel. I don't think they were particularly good anyway after the 90s though

They've had some pretty great tracks and are fantastic live but they'll be back together before you know it. These brothers properly cant bear each other after some amount of time, I find it quite amusing that they are still like that after all these years but really, they wont be successful apart, either of them. Liam needs Noel, hes the brains, yet Noel needs Liam cause without his antics Oasis would be boring and the appeal just wouldnt be there.

Erm, ok. :ermm:

I wasn't aware they have had any success outside their own watering hole since 1995??? Am I missing something? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. They had a couple hits and disappeared as far as the states are concerned. The Spice Girls lasted longer and had more of an impact.

Yeah you are missing something, American success isnt the be all and end all.

Well said. As an American, it always disappoints me when other Americans believe that the world revolves around the United States. . . . All one has to do is look at Oasis' album sales and chart positions to end that argument of relevancy (about 50 million sold worldwide). FYI Oasis' last album went to number five in the United States in 2008 and received favorable reviews:

As for the band breaking up, they'll be back together! Eventually they won't look back in anger and will stand on the shoulders of giants again!

mo - can you tell me what peter kay said about mj on the brits? apparently he introduced a tribute but it wasn't a tribute at all.. :(
