I think it’s worth starting a new thread for this, for visibility.
So, HBO has teamed up with the Apollo Theater for a documentary about the theater’s history, and they somehow managed to not mention Michael Jackson or the Jackson 5 once, which is ridiculous.
This is the Apollo’s tweet:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">We can't thank you enough for tuning in to embrace, to witness, to celebrate, to watch the premiere of <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/TheApolloDoc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#TheApolloDoc</a> on <a href="https://twitter.com/HBO?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@HBO</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/HBODocs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@HBOdocs</a>! Here's WHAT'S NEXT for our historic theater - and we do hope to be seeing you walk through our doors very soon! ❤️ <a href="https://t.co/I9BNc5O8Y3">pic.twitter.com/I9BNc5O8Y3</a></p>— Apollo Theater (@ApolloTheater) <a href="https://twitter.com/ApolloTheater/status/1192287560736923648?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 7, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Notice the low number of likes and retweets versus what’s going on in the comments. So the public is aware that something stinks.
As we all know, the Jackson 5 famously won a talent night at the Apollo, which kickstarted their career:
And the last time MJ appeared at the Apollo was for Bill Clinton’s fundraiser in 2002:

And this is AP reporting from The Apollo after his death:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Poe7GRTXt8Y" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Yet, HBO chose to represent MJ’s part in the theater’s history like this:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">So <a href="https://twitter.com/HBODocs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@HBOdocs</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/Kamilahf?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Kamilahf</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/RogerRossWill?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@RogerRossWill</a> chose to use the first image to acknowledge Michael Jackson, rather than the second that is historically accurate. Every single one of them should be ashamed of themselves. <a href="https://t.co/xDO3gvda8L">pic.twitter.com/xDO3gvda8L</a></p>— andjustice4some (@andjustice4some) <a href="https://twitter.com/andjustice4some/status/1192670518186401793?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 8, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
For reference, this is how other artists were represented:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">For context, this is what The Apollo documentary showed in tribute to its artists. Houston, Prince, Brown all shown on the marquee. Not Michael Jackson. And not one image of the Jackson 5 whatsoever. <a href="https://t.co/HCltJFIxCs">pic.twitter.com/HCltJFIxCs</a></p>— andjustice4some (@andjustice4some) <a href="https://twitter.com/andjustice4some/status/1192669232682586112?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 8, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Now, you’re probably not surprised that HBO would do something like this, but the Apollo?
It’s beginning to make sense when you look at their supporters:
I decided to open a new thread because it looks like we need to investigate this.
