I Get Why Michael Jackson Called His Son 'Blanket'

Back when Michael Jackson first introduced his son Blanket (born Prince Michael Jackson II in 2002), I thought he was absolutely nuts. Blanket? Who calls a kid Blanket? I passed judgement, snickered, probably even took some jabs about the name with friends. I was childless then. Now that I'm a mom, I totally get calling your child Blanket.

I find the nickname to be adorably endearing. Just like Blanket himself.

We all have nicknames for our kids. But we aren't all in the extreme public eye like Michael Jackson was. His every move was watched and judged. People questioned if the kids were really his and made fun of their names.

These are things his kids, who are growing up, will know about if they read what has been written about them. Paris is 13. Prince Michael I is 14. Blanket is 9. No child deserves to read some of those terrible things people said about them -- those who questioned their "validity" or took cheap jabs at a name that perhaps a father lovingly gave.

It's clear to me that Michael was a great dad to these kids. They seem loving and warm and kind. And Blanket is an adorable nickname. Maybe he loved his blanket -- couldn't be without it. Maybe it's just one of those nicknames that just happened.

I call my daughter Bunny most of the time, but her name is Penelope. My husband and I also call her Pips, Pippi, Monkey, Monks, Boo Boo, and Tutu. My son, Hunter, is called Hunti, Manny, Man, and Baby Man. If media outlets started making fun of the nicknames I gave my kids, it would feel terrible. I think I would want to live in a bubble and never come out of it. And that's kind of the way Michael lived with his three kids. And I get it. He was a protective father and I would be the same way if I faced that kind of scrutiny that comes with that level of fame.

My heart hurts for the Jackson kids. They lost their father way too soon. Every time I see a story about them or when I saw Paris on Ellen -- I root for them. And I'm reminded how much love Jackson had for his kids -- he gave them nicknames that came from the heart. We shouldn't make fun.

Can you understand having a "different" kind of nickname for your child? A nickname like Blanket? What is your child's nickname?

Thanks. Michael explained why he called him Blanket, and I hope the author finds that out too.

Wait what? People thought his nickname was weird enough to make fun of? really? Wow that's news to me.

thats what angers me about articles like this....the author had NO PROBLEM making fun of his nickname before she had children...and didn't realize until after she already had kids that nicknames are..ok. Well not for nothing...but who gives a crap what the author thinks of Blankets nickname...obviously she was SO judgmental that she found it ok to pick at a child....WHY do I care what she has to say NOW??? I DON"T. ...and I am sure Blanket wouldn't either...smdh

People change for the better sometimes - That was Michael message "Make that change". So if our message is Heal The World and we want people to change for the better it seems only right we except that and not judge them when they do. We have many fans who thought weird things about MJ before they understood and learned the truth. We forgive them and allow them to be part of MJ fam. This woman is certainly not a bad person she is clearly stating she is ashamed for not understanding and now knows why childrens nicknames are so endearing. And now she is spreading a positive message to help others. Those willing to change and admit mistakes show good character In my opinion. I respect her for doing that and setting the record straight. Myself Im more concerned and worried over people who are judgemental and unforgiving of others than those who are willing to mend their ways ?

I understand the feeling how people say these nice things after Michael died and after whatever the situation was and you feel like it's too late now. But I do appreciate when people say they were wrong and made a mistake. It's the people you know said bad things about Michael and when he died acted like they were so close and they did nothing wrong. There are so many hypocrites but if there are people willing to say they feel bad or were wrong towards Michael then I want to hear it. I just wish that people were kinder and more understanding to Michael when he was here. Maybe he would have had less hurt in his life.

I am ALL for giving people second chances,,,glad this person has changed their mind as well..BUT I cannot sit back and pretend to say that I could careless about what it is this person thought about the nickname of a child....that is the lowest point that a person can go to...speaking negatively about a child because of a stupid thing like a nickname...not to mention that she gets it AFTER Michael passes...thats the thing about people like this,.,,for the past two years..the NOW get it. I say whatever...and I am glad that she had forgiven herself for having negative opinions about something that was none of her business to begin with...Blanket is not her child so what should she care WHAT he is called for a nickname...I am sure she has her hands full with her own little angels...she needs to worry about them...not Blankets nickname.

I was going to write something very nusty about the woman who finally got it that by using Michael Jackson name you will have site traffic, but in the spirit of Christmas, i won't.

Took them 10 years to write this article. they arent very quick or bright are they!

The first part of the article sounds extremely phoney to me. She's using Michael's name, and Blanket's picture to introduce an article about nicknames. That's all this is to me.

for real

I never understand this people. Why it's so strange that MJ had a nickname for his kid? It's just interesting that people can make fun of him for everything. Anyway, it's good that she finally got it. MJ told himself almost 10 years ago why he called him Blanket. sigh~~~

I think it's because since people are so ignorant, they think 'Blanket' is his actual name.

Cute article but ummmmmmmm... I mean, Blankets name is imo not just a random nickname... there is a meaning/message behind his name - "blessing".

That is the point, that michael said a long time ago why he called his son Blanket and the other Prince. They never believed him then. Prince was named after his grandfather, and some said he called the child Prince because he was stuck on this royalty thing. They ignore what Michael say and then years later miraculously become enlightened.

yet we're supposed to be over the moon because after years of ignorance, they've finally decided to use common sense instead of prejudice while forming an opinion about Michael.

prince is only a nickname aswell. but of course that was ignored by the media because as the poster says above they were to tied up trying to act like he was obsessed with being royal. the media should talk to TJ about that lol

I thought it was a nice, light article. I am always pleased when people admit to their narrow-minded points of view because it sometimes leads them to further investigation. Many a fan has come from "What a loser" to "Wow, maybe I was wrong" to "Michael Jackson is like the greatest thing EVER!"

Wouldn't it be great if writer ended up on this board years from now, passionately defending Michael against the attacks of the narrow-minded? Like, how cool would that be?

Prince was the name of his Grandfather that is why he called his son Prince.

Yeah mjs grandfather and great grand father were both prince. prince is a nickname though his legal name as on his birth certificate and other legal docs is michael joseph junior

I don't understand why people always look for some " weird " things when it's about Mike.

People are so stupid.

Brainwashing of the masses. gotta keep the agenda going

I never understood why prince was a family name for generations in Katherine's family, yet she never used it for any of her sons, when she had 7 boys names to come up with. Glad mj carried on the family tradition and thank goodness jermaine didn't get in first with jerprince.
