A visit to the Motown Museum now means walking through two houses on West Grand Boulevard where Berry Gordy and Motown recorded hit after hit after hit. Standing in the small studio where those hits were recorded, it's hard not to get chills. Now, the museum has announced it intends on becoming even more of a tourist destination with a $50 million expansion.

This is great news for the surrounding neighborhood. The Motown Museum is located on West Grand Boulevard, down the street from the Fisher Building and the Henry Ford Hospital. With these new renderings, it looks like Hitsville USA will be hard to miss in the near future.

The expansion will turn it into a 50,000 square foot tourist destination, with interactive exhibits, a new theater, recording studios, and expanded meeting and retail space.

According to the Free Press, fundraising has been underway for years. The museum also owns many nearby properties.

Phil Freelon, who led the design team for the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, helped develop the initial concepts for the design. He recently mentioned the project on Curbed.com.

"This is happening right on the site where Berry Gordy first started Hitsville. It's a renovation of his house back in the '50s. That's going to be our full-scale artifact, restoring that and some of the recording areas in the basement where many of the tunes we're all familiar with happened right there. We're adding forty thousand square feet behind the legacy building, Hitsville being one of them, and there are three others. It becomes this constellation of legacy structures and new construction woven in together to make the visitor experience, including twenty thousand square feet of new exhibition space. "

Detroit-based Hamilton Anderson Associates are the architects of record for the project.

No timeline has been announced.

Motown Museum expansion includes new theater from Ford
And Stevie Wonder is getting his own street

A couple months ago, we shared that the Motown Museum was undergoing a $50 million expansion. We now have a few more details on that big project.

Ford and UAW-Ford are lead donors in the project, pitching in $6 million to help create a new theater at the site.

The Ford Motor Company Theater, a state-of-the-art performance space, is part of the gift, along with educational, music and other programming as part of community outreach. Also part of this gift is something called CARaoke Experience, which we’re guessing means you can sing along to Motown songs in a Ford vehicle.

Also in Motown Museum news, Friday at 5 is the unveiling of Stevie Wonder Avenue at the corner of West Milwaukee & Woodward Avenue. Isn’t that lovely?

I'm sorry if this is off topic a bit, but I could not find a thread, other than this one,
to make my post and I didnt want to start a new thread.

If MJ went back to MOTOWN, it would look like this.
There are plans underway for an expansion of the famed MOTOWN Museum....aka HITSVILLE USA.
I would sure like to visit it now to experience the original place where The J5 recorded before it's expansions take place
Pretty cool, huh?:)

And look! You can see the picture of the brothers in the near background.
