Re: MJ's album sales in the US is still huge

It will be nice if thriller overtakes the eagles hits as the certified best selling album in the US. I expect it will.

My Personal Expectations For This Week In The US:

Number Ones: 350,000-400,000
Thriller: 150,000-160,000
Essential: 100,000-110,000
Bad: 50,000-60,000
Off The Wall: 50,000-60,000
Dangerous: 40,000-50,000
Other Jackson/J5 Albums: 40,000-50,000

TOTAL ALBUM SALES PROJECTED THIS WEEK: 780,000 (low) -900,000 (high)

Online Digital Downloads: 1.1 to 1.2 million

Who the heck is still buying "Thriller"?. That album never stops selling, even before MJ's passing, it was doing fairly well.

 that was funny

I hope my professor can find the Triller LP Vynil, and some dvds I don't have in Barns & Noble.
If he can, I'll do my part with Thriller too

Good! I believe Thriller already sold more than the eagles they just don't want to say it.

He is still the King. All he's gotta do is lay there and he still dominates the charts :)

why are people sleeping on invincible?

A lot of people don't even know it exists. Sadly, it barely got any radio/video play in 2001-02, and I haven't heard any tracks from it on the radio in years, until recently.

I think it's simply because the stores aren't carrying INVINCIBLE or else they'd buy them. (rolls eyes) Reason why it's NUMBER ONES that's... NUMBER ONE... lol

If Michael finishes this week with 6 entries in the top 10 best selling albums that will be phenomenal. Nobody has ever done that in the history of Billboard. It would break another record. Look how much Maxwell's BlackSummerNight has surged up. It almost went up 100,000...hopefully it doesn't overtake MJ's position. The final results will be issued tomorrow night so keep your ear out for that. With that, here is my new updated figures:

Number Ones: 350,000-400,000
Thriller: 150,000-160,000
Essential: 100,000-110,000
Bad: 60,000-70,000
Off The Wall: 55,000-65,000
Dangerous: 50,000-60,000
Other Jackson/J5 Albums: 50,000-60,000

TOTAL ALBUM SALES PROJECTED THIS WEEK: 810,000 (low) -950,000 (high)

Can someone explain why it isn´t possible to buy the original Bad album anymore? As I have understood it, they have stopped producing it and they only sell a newer special version. I want to buy the original version and original version only!

You're right. That is one reason some of his other CDs didn't sell as well is because you couldn't find them anywhere. They now have several of them when before all you could find was Thriller and maybe Number Ones.

JACKSON'S NUMBER ONES IS #1
Maxwell Bows at #2, Hannah Montana #3 and All Time Low #9, But Michael Jackson Continues His Reign with five of the Top 10, 10 of Top 50

Michael Jackson may still be dead, but the record biz he left behind is alive and kicking.

The King of Pop reigns supreme once again, with five of the Top 10 and 10 of the Top 50, including the Jackson 5’s Ultimate Collection on Motown at #13.

Epic’s Number Ones collection leads the way, with a total of 333k, just enough to top Columbia Records soul man Maxwell’s BLACKsummers’night, his first album in eight years, which bows at #2, with a robust 311k, a real triumph for Steve Barnett and his label team.

The other Jackson titles in the Top 10 include Thriller (#3), Essential (#5), Off the Wall (#7) and Bad (#8), with Ultimate Collection (#13), HIStory Greatest Hits Vol. 1 (#28), Invincible (#41) and HIStory—Past Present & Future (#43) all scoring in the Top 50.

Thriller is up 32%, Essential 9%, Off the Wall 104%, Bad 321% and Dangerous 160%, while Jackson 5’s Ultimate Collection, HIStory Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, Invincible and History—Past, Present & Future all enter the Top 50 for the first time.

Thanks to the late superstar, Sony Music nabs seven of the Top 10.

Fans Snap Up 1.1 Million Michael Jackson Albums In One Week
July 14, 2009 - Rock and Pop

By Keith Caulfield, L.A.

The King of Pop dominates the Nielsen SoundScan and Billboard charts yet again.

Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, Michael Jackson's catalog of solo albums sold a mighty 1.1 million copies in the U.S. in the tracking week that ended at the close of business on Sunday (July 12).

That's a jump of 37% stacked next to the previous week, when his combined albums sold just shy of 800,000. In just the past two and a half weeks, American consumers have purchased more than 2.3 million Jackson albums.

Record label sources have suggested that sales of Jackson's albums were particularly strong last week because of publicity surrounding his memorial service on Tuesday July 7. Additionally, a wider selection of his albums were re-stocked by key retailers, in addition to key hits compilations like "Number Ones" and "The Essential Michael Jackson" and of course, "Thriller."

When Nielsen SoundScan's charts are released in the morning on Wednesday, July 15, Jackson's "Number Ones" collection will be the top selling album in the United States for the third week in a row, with 349,000 copies sold (an increase of 3%).

His "Thriller" moved 264,000 (up 41%) while "Essential" powered through another 149,000 (up 18%). Some older Jackson titles also saw great gains, likely owed to the one-two punch of re-stocking by brick-and-mortar retailers and the publicity generated by the memorial service.

"Off the Wall" sold 107,000 (up 108%), "Bad" did 97,000 (up 332%) and "Dangerous" blew through 67,000 (up 157%).

In turn, Jackson is still the King of the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. It tallies albums that are more than 18 months old, have fallen below No. 100 on the Billboard 200 and don't have a current radio single. Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200 chart though they can chart on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart.

This week, the entire top 12 albums are all Jackson-related. The singer specifically has the titles at Nos. 1-6 and 9-12, while two Jackson 5 compilations hold down the fort at Nos. 7 and 8.

Top Pop Catalog Albums Chart (Week Ending 7/12/2009)
1) Michael Jackson "Number Ones"
2) Michael Jackson "The Essential Michael Jackson"
3) Michael Jackson "Thriller"
4) Michael Jackson "Off The Wall"
5) Michael Jackson "Bad"
6) Michael Jackson "Dangerous"
7) Jackson 5 "The Ultimate Collection"
8) Jackson 5 "The Best of Jackson 5: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection"
9) Michael Jackson "Greatest Hits: HIStory -- Volume 1"
10) Michael Jackson "HIStory: Past, Present and Future Book 1"
11) Michael Jackson "Invincible"
12) Michael Jackson "The Ultimate Collection"

Jackson's digital track sales have leveled off in the past tracking week, but still totaled 2.5 million in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Fantastic...blew past my expectations for sure. 1.1 million albums in 1 week! Thats unheard of! MJ has 5 of the top 10 best selling albums in the United States

There is really absolutely no way that the Eagles Greatest Hits has sold more copies than Thriller in the US. Thriller has to be over 30 million at this point. It really can't be that hard to recalculate, so let's go ahead and do it.

The thing is that this mega success of MJs albums is not officially presented as a relevant fact, and people who dont see the billboard.com website dont know that soome Contemporary album chart exists!

And of course, in the "offcial" chart Michaels album are not there.

Anyway, I dont understand why people are buying GHs albums, why not HIStory, Off the Wall, BEN, Got To Be There, or the Jackson5 classics and MJs beautiful voice from the 70s!????
