I found something interesting and very disturbing, probably false information on his page. He is saying that MJ's Estate will lose The Beatles catalogue in 2026. Is that true? It sounds like bulls**t to me. How can they lose it when MJ paid for it and bought it?

"What will happen in 2018? Paul McCartney will likely start taking back his rights to the songs he wrote with John Lennon. He has his own publishing company, MPL. Eventually he’ll get back everything Michael Jackson got when he bought the Beatles catalog in 1984. Jackson’s big Beatles part will be over by 2026. The loser could be Sony/ATV Music, unless they can strike a deal with McCartney to continue administering the songs and taking fees."

Can someone please explain what he's talking about? Or is he lying (again).

Thanks!

I think he is right this time. The estate and Sony don't lose the catalogue as a bulk, but they are starting to lose song by song.

The U.S. Copyright Act of 1976 says that the rights to any songs written before 1978 go back to the songwriters after 56 years. For Paul McCartney, this means that he will own his own songs again starting in 2018, when he will be 76 years old. The Beatles broke up in 1970, so McCartney will get the bulk of his sons back by 2026.

For the records, when Paul start getting rights back to his songs, he will not struck deal the MJ estate, he has his own MPL music publishing company, see more here: http://www.mplcommunications.com/about.php

I wonder what happens to John Lennon's songs? They go to widow - Yoko Ono, but I just don't see her to let Paul control John's songs, so she might keep the control with Sony/ATV.

Ugh! When will that Chicken Fried-Man ever shut up!?

Yeah. I just came up with a nickname for Friedman. Chicken Fried-Man.

I have seen this discussed before and it's not as clear as that at all. I don't pretend to fully understand it but it's legally a lot more complex issue than how the media presents it and it does not only concern MJ's Estate and Sony but a lot of record companies who surely won't go down without a fight and there will be a lot of legal back and forths over this. Plus the Sony/ATV catalogue is a LOT more than just the Beatles songs ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony/ATV_Music_Publishing_artists ), so even if they would lose the Beatles songs it would still be one of the most valuable catalogues.

(Roger has been salivating over the prospect of MJ losing the catalogue since forever. Back in 2007 he predicted he would lose it in 2008. It never happened.)

What a stupid law! So, MJ (now Estate) will lose a huge amount of songs because majority of them were written before 1976. And that means a lot less income to the MJ's kids.

I know but The Beatles songs are the most valuable part of it.

Really, I think Sony/ATV-catalog has around 750000 songs from famous artists. Beatles-catalog are 250 songs.

When MJ died and there was a talk that he had Willed The Beatles catalogue to Paul, which wasn't true.
Paul did some tv interviews after MJ's passing, and he was asked about whether MJ gave them back to Paul, and he said "I don't think so", or something similar, then he added "but it doesn't matter because I start getting them back soon" (or something similar). When I have time, I try to find the interview from youtube, and post it here.

Ps, The Beatles catalogue is not just songs written by Paul. There songs from other Beatles members, and I wonder will those stay with ATV or whether heirs of those members wants Paul's publishing company to manage publishing rights?

^^The most recent interview Paul gave talking about Michael was with David Letterman, if I'm not mistaken. And he just told for the millionth time HIS side of the story how Michael got the catalogue from him. :bs:

I don't get why The Beatles catalogue is treated like the most valuable jewelry from the crown if Michael owns half Sony's music publishing rights and I'm pretty sure his own catalogue is pretty valuable.
