Even when Michael Jackson was still alive, rumors abounded that he would lose Neverland Ranch due to his debt. And even since his death (2 years ago this summer already!), nobody's really sure what's going to happen to it. But there are rumors now that his children Paris and Prince Michael Jackson would like to create a “community park and center for animals” on the 2,800 acre property, and PETA is encouraging them to make it happen.<!-- Item fulltext -->
In a letter to the Jackson kids, PETA representative Michelle Cho writes, “We are writing because it has come to our attention that you hope to one day turn your father’s Neverland Ranch into a community park and center for animals. We encourage you to call for this vast refuge to be turned into a true wildlife sanctuary where animals can be properly taken care of instead of a zoo, where people are encouraged to gawk at imprisoned animals in the name of profit.”

You may remember back in the day when Michael used Neverland to house all kinds of animals, including the chimp Bubbles, who became a true companion to the King of Pop – so loved by Michael that he relocated Bubbles to a sanctuary away from the public. “Michael realized that Bubbles belonged with others of his kind in a loving and safe environment, and we hope that Prince Michael and Paris will honor his memory by doing the same for other animals,” PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk said in a press release.

In Cho's letter, she recommends resources for the kids on how they can convert the ranch. “Much would have to be done, but with some of the necessary facilities already in place, Neverland Ranch could be a suitable location for an animal sanctuary.” She emphasizes that Neverland has the potential to be “a place where animals can escape from their former lives of abuse and neglect. With that in mind, I would like to offer you PETA’s support if you choose to go forward with plans to turn the Neverland Ranch into a true sanctuary.”

We hope the children go forward with the plans. With Neverland's vicinity to Hollywood, it would be a great place for former showbiz animals to retire and rehabilitate in peace. Hopefully they'll follow in their father's giving footsteps.
