Katherine Jackson has announced that The 5th Annual Michael Jackson "King of Pop" Tribute Festival of the Arts will take place in Gary, Indiana, on Aug. 28-30 at 2300 Jackson St, Michael's birth home.

This year's tribute festival is different from previous years. The theme is "Art for Life," and the festival will be showcasing undiscovered talent.

The outdoor tribute festival is free to the public and will begin with the opening ceremony conducted by Gary, officials and a tribute to Michael Jackson from the Roosevelt High School marching band.

I might go. I kind of abhor anything the family does because it's always so damn tacky, but if there is a legitimate itinerary and whatnot, I might consider it. I'm just in Minneapolis, so only a days' drive...and if nothing else I can say eff it! And go to Chicago for the weekend :)

GARY | Partners gathered in a vacant lot at 25th Avenue and Jackson Street Thursday morning to ceremoniously break ground on a new home project aimed at revitalizing the neighborhood as well as the city.

"It's more than building houses," Jeff Cardwell, special assistant to Gov. Mike Pence said. "This is about changing lives."

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said discussions began about six months ago when Cardwell approached her with the idea of bringing a Fuller Center for Housing project to her city.

Freeman-Wilson said there had been a host of ideas discussed for the area near 2300 Jackson Street where Michael Jackson and his famous siblings once lived.

The previous ideas, Freeman-Wilson said, were "all sorts of big ideas, but no money."

With this proposal, the mayor said she, "immediately started to see that vision."

"What better way to honor the legacy of Michael Jackson and Katherine Jackson ... than to really make this something we would be proud for tourists from all over the world to see," Freeman-Wilson said.

The Christian-based Fuller Center for Housing — a Georgia-based nonprofit founded by the late Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller — helped establish a local chapter with a board to oversee the project.

Four homes in a two-block radius near 25th Avenue and Jackson Street will be built and mortgages will be held by the nonprofit. Families can purchase the homes for about $50,000 with no interest and pay them off in about 10 years.

The project brings local, county and state governmental entities and elected officials from both sides of the aisle together with corporate and nonprofit donors and volunteers.

The Rev. Chet Johnson of New Tabernacle Baptist Church and president of the board of directors for the project, said the program aims to provide affordable housing for those unable to secure traditional mortgages.

Site preparation work will begin soon, officials said, and construction begins Aug. 25 with a prayer service at 7:30 a.m.

Anyone can volunteer to work on the project, which will complete construction on four homes in five days.

"If you can stand on two feet, have a heartbeat and breathe, you're qualified," Cardwell said.

Pence is expected to spend time putting in hard labor working on the project as well, Cardwell said.

"Everyone's put their differences aside," he said. "This is not a political program. This is about helping people."

The project will be complete on Aug. 29, which would have been Michael Jackson's 56th birthday. A 3 p.m. dedication ceremony is scheduled for that day.

NIPSCO contributed $50,000 to the project and the Indiana Department of Correction pledged $50,000 as well. All of the Department of Correction funds have been raised and donated by inmates and staff throughout the Department of Correction system.

Inmates from Westville Correctional Facility will also be providing labor for the project.

Majestic Star Casino and the Gary Railcats are partnering for two fundraising efforts as well. Centier Bank also has pledged financial support.

Local laborers, small hardware stores and Menards also have pledged support.

If his children are dragged and used for it (again). He always seemed much wiser than that!

Now before I hear again the kids are old enough and want it.... noone will convince me that Paris wanted the situation of last year uh?! She wasn't protected and shielded enough as easy as that! I don't need to see this happen to more kids (no matter if those are Michaels or just some other kids btw!)
Adults can do the stage as much as they want and it's nice if they don't do it for money but for charity. Children have to be shielded and protected till they are not children anymore but adults.

Good tell us about it. I know Cassi went before and shared some wonderful pictures. I guess the kids will not be throwing the first ball in the game this year. I expect the boys will attend, but I don't know about Paris. They should turn this into some structured high quality event, but they need some A list people to plan it, so that it will be a great symbol of taste and professionalism nationally. I like the idea of building houses for the less fortunate and hope it really becomes a reality.
 
Will do. I would love to see these house this is just beautiful to see if Michael was here he would be proud to see this. Homes for the low income. This is good for them to started build up Gary. This will be ready on Aug 29 how awesome.


I wonder if Michael had anything to do with this that just imo.

^^Well it has always been like a carnival, but the people who attend love it; so let them have their happiness.
 
This year it was different it was alot of things that was done it showcase the talent of the young ppls in Gary homes that was build for four family on the same street as Michael's house to me it was the best one that i have attend. This year Rebbie came Mrs. Jackson got a special awards call the Gary Community School Corporation Children Of the World Award. There was a International Orchestra from Wirt-Emerson Academy that preform their did a beautiful job. When we first walk in the aud their were showing some of Michael performs it just brought tears to my eyes. The group called Roses In Gary we had deliver to Michael 's house 56 yellow roses in honor of Michael birthday here are a few pictures. Mrs. Jackson did see the flowers. This year it was a Jacksons-Gary celebrated and we may see more of this in the future.

Pminton Yes from the right ups it does seem that this year had more to it. ^^Thanks for the photos. I guess Joe did not go this year? The statue of the 2 kids playing--is that from Neverland, and if so, who took it there?

Oh but it did i was wondering that too where did the statue come from i don't remember seeing them in pictures from Neverland. Joe was not there.
 



Rebbie came this year the brothers send a letter to mom wishing their could be there with her cong her on the award she recvied. I would just love to see the whole family there.

Nice photos. Yeah the statue looks like something I saw in Neverland photos. I like how that house has those images on the window. Is that a type of window shade?

I don't know if their are window shades. It could be a big poster over the window it was new this year not there last year. Now that you mention it that could be true the house was use for the special guest that was there.
