Lots of talk of the two lawsuits

Will Rival Promoter Put Kibosh on Michael Jackson's Curtain Call?

British oddsmakers figured that Michael Jackson would come up with some excuse not to perform his Final Curtain Call. But we're guessing even they didn't see this coming.
A promoter tells E! News that he's willing to go to court to shut down the King of Pop's multi-night stand at London's O2 arena because it violated an earlier deal Jackson's manager had signed for a Jackson family reunion show that included a reunited Jackson 5 along with sister Janet.
"We have a noncompete [clause]," says Patrick Allocco, president and CEO of AllGood Entertainment. "Prior to our show, Michael cannot perform anywhere in the world."
According to Allocco, Jackson's manager, Frank Dileo, signed the deal last November committing the King of Pop and the rest of the clan to a show scheduled for July 3, 2010 in Austin, Texas. But Jackson's solo stand is set to kick off this summer.
Allocco claims he was willing to negotiate when Jackson showed an interest in the AEG-sponsored O2 Arena concert series in London, but efforts to resolve the situation were rebuffed.
Allocco says the 50-year-old Moonwalker is set to gain nearly $24 million for the Texas show.
For now, the promoter is going forward with plans to file a lawsuit against the pop star by the week's end. But Allocco & Co. will have to get in line. The perpetually targeted Jackson was just tagged with a pair of new lawsuits by his former manager/publicist and his "Thriller" video costar.
Dileo, AEG, and Jackson's rep were unable to be reached for comment.

Michael Jackson tour could release more tickets for O2 Arena

By Bob Grossweiner & Jane Cohen
jackson-O2-77x77_3.gif

Michael Jackson's comeback performances are supposed to kick off at the O2 Arena in London, ENG, on July 8. All 50 dates reportedly sold out, practically as fast as the tickets could be issued. The 50-show residency in the 20,000-seat capacity venue means 1 million tickets sold. Right?
Well, maybe not. After the March 13 on-sales, promoter AEG Live and CNN reported that 750,000 tickets were sold to the 50-show residency, which would set the arena's nightly capacity around 15,000.
However, the venue will be configured for closer to 16,000 to 17,000 people, presumably with no tickets sold behind the stage in a proscenium setting, according to the British concert industry trade publication Audience. When the staging is set up in the venue, and like almost every other tour in a large building, more tickets will be sold due to production kills. The promoters will then be able to see which previously held-back tickets will have decent sightlines.
The shows are expected to gross $72.2 million from ticket sales. "We often talk about unprecedented demand," Ticketmaster Managing Director Chris Edmonds told Audience, "but we witnessed a live entertainment phenomenon."

"The idea of booking these capital market arena residencies is something [AEG president] Tim Leiweke and I have toyed with before the 02 opened," added AEG Live CEO Randy Philips. "We had a list of artists we thought who could do it, but had only ever really thought of acts doing five or 10 nights."
The venue record is held by Prince with 21 concerts, followed by The Spice Girls with 17 shows.

Michael Jackson rehearses near Burbank airport

The erstwhile King of Pop has a lot riding on his upcoming 50 sold-out shows at London's O2 Arena.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/la-et-jackson12-2009may12,0,758954.story?track=rss

By Harriet Ryan and Chris Lee May 12, 2009 Four mornings a week, an SUV with darkened windows bears Michael Jackson through the gates outside a nondescript building near the Burbank airport. He spends the next six hours on a soundstage in the company of 10 dancers and pop music's best-known choreographer.

The details of rehearsals for Jackson's upcoming concerts in London are closely held secrets, but what's at stake for him is not. The ambitious schedule of 50 sold-out shows could turn out to be the final, sad chapter of Jackson's storied career -- or one of pop music's all-time greatest comeback stories.

When -- or if, in the view of many industry skeptics -- Jackson takes the stage at the O2 Arena July 8, it will be his first extended concert run in 12 years. Doubters cite his long hiatus from performing, health problems, a onetime prescription pill addiction, age -- he is 50 -- and his reputation for flaking out on performances and business deals.

But the concert promoter, Los Angeles-based AEG Live, insists that Jackson is prepared mentally and physically and that the show, called "This Is It," will break new ground in both artistry and sheer cost. The production budget is "north of $20 million," a price tag that will include as many as 22 different sets, said Randy Phillips, the company's chief executive.

"It's going to be the biggest, most technologically advanced arena show -- and the most expensive -- ever mounted," Phillips said.

On Monday, the company announced that choreographer and director Kenny Ortega, the force behind the movie "Dirty Dancing" and the "High School Musical" series, as well as Jackson's Dangerous and HIStory tours, has signed on to direct and design the shows. Ortega agreed to work around his schedule as director of the planned remake of the 1984 movie "Footloose" to take on Jackson's shows, according to AEG.

In a statement, Ortega called Jackson "the greatest entertainer of our generation" and said he was eager to collaborate with him again. "My answer without a beat was nothing could keep me away," he said.

In Ortega, Jackson chose someone who has achieved what he could not -- continuous cultural relevance after great success in the 1980s. He tapped as the show's choreographer and associate director Travis Payne, who worked with Jackson in the mid-1990s. Payne's recent work includes routines for Beyoncé and Madonna, as well as a "Dancing With the Stars" tribute to Jackson.

Also involved are younger choreographers who rose to prominence translating Jackson's style for a new generation. Todd Sams, who has worked with Usher, is collaborating on the show, according to a representative, and Rich & Tone Talauega, a duo who have choreographed Chris Brown's moves, were present for auditions last month.

The two-day casting call drew 700 dancers to downtown Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre. "They were from the elite agencies across the world -- London, France, New York," said Australian dancer Nandy McClean, who was not chosen. "There were hip-hop dancers and jazz dancers. You could tell a lot of them were crazy Michael Jackson fans who grew up watching him."

In the end, eight men and two women were selected. Jackson attended the second day of tryouts -- one agency head compared the experience to basketball players auditioning for Michael Jordan.

"Dancing for an artist who is so amazing and who everyone looks up to was the best feeling of my life," said Atlanta dancer Victor Carter, who did not make the cut. "He perfected the profession."

Jackson is taking a hands-on role in coming up with routines, according to Ortega and Phillips. The singer is developing a move that he hopes will be as distinctive as the moonwalk, Phillips said. "He's working on it," he said, refusing to say more: "I'm sworn to secrecy."

When the public last got an extended look at Jackson -- during his 2005 molestation trial -- he appeared in no condition for a grueling concert schedule. He was hospitalized during the proceeding, his clothes hung on his gaunt frame and at times he seemed to have difficulty walking. He later acknowledged an addiction to painkillers.

But AEG's Phillips said Jackson had "filled out" by last November, when discussions about the London concerts began. He said a four-hour physical with an independent physician this spring found no medical problems. In preparation for the shows, Jackson is doing aerobics with a personal trainer and has had no difficulty keeping up with dancers half his age during rehearsals in Burbank, Phillips said.

Those practice sessions occur in secrecy, thanks to security patrols and confidentiality agreements. There have been rumors, especially in the British media, that the production will include a duet with Jackson's eldest son, Prince Michael, a stage filled with Jackson look-alikes, and a cast of monkeys and elephants.

Beyond denying the last report -- "No animals. No animals!" Phillips said -- producers are tight-lipped about what the 20,000 fans in the arena will see. Jackson will perform between 18 and 22 songs. Some choreography will feature aerial dancing similar to routines by Cirque du Soleil, he said.

The singer has said he will sing his hits, telling a March news conference, "I will be performing the songs my fans want to hear."

The concert preparation has not been spared the lawsuits and threats of suits that seem to be a given in any dealings with Jackson. Last week, he was sued by his former publicist and the actress who co-starred in the 1983 "Thriller" video. On Monday, a New Jersey concert promoter sent a cease and desist letter, alleging the London appearances violated terms of an agreement to play a Jackson Five reunion concert.

Phillips said the claim was "meritless" and had not affected rehearsals.

A music promoter plans to sue to block Michael Jackson from performing in London this year, claiming that a contract signed by the "king of pop" prevents him from giving a concert until July 2010, the head of the promotion company said on Monday.

New Jersey-based AllGood Entertainment Inc contends it signed an agreement in November with Jackson's manager, Frank DeLeo, committing the singer to perform in July 2010 along with his brothers from the Jackson Five and sister Janet Jackson.

Under the agreement, Michael Jackson cannot give another concert until that Jackson Family reunion show, said Patrick Allocco, managing partner at AllGood Entertainment.

AllGood Entertainment sent a cease and desist letter to Jackson in March warning him not to perform a series of 50 shows in London's 02 Arena with concert promoter AEG that are scheduled to begin in July, Allocco said.

Representatives for Jackson and AEG did not return calls.

Allocco said his company's plans to sue in federal court come after failed attempts to negotiate with Jackson and reach a deal to allow the London shows to go ahead.

"As of right now we've gotten zero cooperation from anyone, Frank DeLeo refuses to honor our agreement and that's why we're filing a lawsuit by week's end," Allocco said.

AllGood Entertainment said that its one-time concert featuring Michael Jackson is scheduled for July 3, 2010, at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas. The concert would be available as a pay-per-view event over the Internet, Allocco said.

Jackson could make up to $30 million for the show, Allocco said.

"Thirty million for one show is unheard of, that's why we're so frustrated," he said. "Frank DeLeo is standing in our way. AEG has been constantly frustrating our ability to get this show."

Jackson's series of concerts in London also have been touted as unprecedented. AEG has said that, all together, the shows will gather the biggest audience ever to see an artist in one city.

Yes, I enjoyed reading it also.

It's nice to hear from folks who are actually working with MJ and from those who auditioned for him, even when some of them didn't even make the final cut.

Hopefully, these types of "tidbits" will continue to be released, right up to opening night. It would definitely keep the fans (with or without tickets) excited, in my opinion.

AllGood is mainly upset with Frank for blocking assess, yet the media keeps reporting that their riff is with Michael. These news articles always focus on Michael. But Frank is the real culprit behind all of this because he shouldn't have been negotiating with these people in the first place.

sadly... all this drama around the 50 nights show in London... is giving it great publicity....

remember when he broke the record .. the media ignored it.. but with all this drama they have to report about the sell out the potential money to be made...

i don't like the negativity but the media was probably planning to totally ignore the success of the London concerts ..

thanks to midas

Michael Jackson Rehearsals Move Forward

Michael Jackson is four weeks into rehearsals in Burbank, Calif., more than $85 million is in the bank from ticket sales, and the King of Pop's return to the stage for 50 shows at London's O2 Arena is looking increasingly like it will happen.

The shows begin July 8, Jackson's first in 12 years. Producer/promoter AEG Live has footed the bill for a $20 million production, and the show layout is coming together. "Originally we tried to keep the show down to 90 minutes, but Michael has so many must-do songs in his repertoire that the shows now will be two-plus hours," AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips tells Billboard.

Phillips would not reveal details of the production, but one could expect a multi-media experience that would be "the most cutting edge ever employed on a tour. We're using technology that's never been used before in live entertainment."

The deal is set up where Jackson shares in net ticket revenue which, according to Billboard calculations, would make Jackson's take on ticket sales alone north of $50 million, though Phillips would not confirm this.

Tickets average about $115 and capacity for the shows will be about 15,000 per, taking the gross for the run to about $90 million. Premium and VIP packages and secondary market sales will boost the gross to more than $100 million. Merchandise sales could bring in another 15 million.

Phillips says AEG Live is well-insured for the event. "We have one policy in place and we're negotiating for an even larger binder," says Phillips. "We have insured the production costs. In order to get the first part of the insurance in place [Jackson] had to have a physical, and he passed it with flying colors."

Phillips called the rehearsal process "exciting. We're using two soundstages, and Michael's working in one with production designers and choreographer/director Kenny Ortega and associate director Travis Payne. And in the other one the dancers and the band - killer musicians - are rehearsing the set and the choreography for each song."

Dancer auditions were held April 13-15 at the Nokia Theatre in L.A., with more than 700 dancers auditioning. We weeded it down to 200 by the third day, and Michael sat in on the final auditions and chose the finalists with Kenny Travis and myself. Everyone's locked in."

Jackson is now working out specific songs, though a top-to-bottom dress rehearsal won't be ready for a month. "Michael's in incredible physical shape, he's got tremendous stamina, he's been working out aerobically preparing for this, and he is totally engaged," Phillips says. "He sounds like Michael Jackson. He is laser-focused on making this the greatest entertainment event that fans have ever seen."

Various legal maneuvers by former Jackson associates attempting to derail the shows are "completely meritless and have not impacted rehearsals in any way," Phillips says. "We have a bona fide contract, the deal's in place, he's performing, we're performing."

AEG Live is locked in.. they are not going to let that gold mine name MJ get derailed by anyone....LOL

thanks for that article, Dorothy..

Michael Jackson’s tour will be a ‘Thriller’

If Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” tour at London’s O2 arena was as doomed as some reports would indicate, you’d think fewer people would want to have their names attached to the project.
According to reps who spoke to the L.A. Times, Usher choreographer Todd Samms is collaborating on the show, and Chris Brown choreography duo Rich and Tone Talauega were on hand during a recent casting call for dancers.
A person who is involved in the planning and execution of the tour disputes this. “Todd, Rich and Tone are all great artists in their own right who have amazing talents,” said the source. “But they aren’t involved in the production.”

“There is so little that anyone is allowed to say about the tour, it’s shrouded in secrecy,” says the source. “All I can say is anyone would want to be attached to this. There are some big things that will happen and amaze.”
As for the idea that Jackson isn’t going to be healthy enough to pull off the tour, the source says, “Michael is focused, dedicated, healthy beyond belief. All rumors that indicate the opposite are bullsh--. Michael wanted to rehearse seven days a week, even, and we had to talk him into rehearsing six days a week.”
Jackson’s tour, his first extended concert run in 12 years, begins July 8.
