I'm not a big fan anymore but EXCELLENT album title. V clever.

I am happy for Mariah but it bugs me at the same time..

Her next single that goes to #1 will tie the the world record of the Beatles for the most number ones.

Why it bugs me... I wish Mike had this world record..

p.s
Michael needs 1 more WMA award to tie Mariah for the most WMA awards. 2 to have the MOST...

Her impact on music cannot be ignored.. She's done great in her career..

I will most likely get ish for this but while there is no denying her enormous success I do argue her "impact". While she is obviously a force I don't think her music is all that memorable nor has she really impacted the world the likes of other contemporaries. I don't really feel she has challenged herself or donated anything substantial to the music world. I'm sorry if I offend any Mariah fans. This is my personal opinion. Mariah seems like a really sweet person and I mean no disrespect. I simply could never look at her as a legend the likes of Michael no matter how many #1's she rakes in.

But her voice is INCREDIBLE though lol

I won't deny that either. How could anyone? Well, I'm sure there is someone out there who doesn't think she's all that. I personally think Ms Houston is superior. :p

Co-sign in everything you said. I would never call her a legend. She is an icon, that I do believe but not a legend. Most of her number one songs are pretty bad. LOL. I believe she got most of her number ones because she makes songs that are popular. She used to be a great singer, imo, but she mostly whispers than sing. When she used to SING, she was flawless and amazing.

As for her CD cover, I do not like it. LOL. She is too old for this. Can she do something more classy?

Mariah still sings. It's simply the style she's adopted that you don't like. It's not whispering, it's just the way she styles. She's one of the best singers around and is technically superior to Whitney Housten.

At one time I was a huge Mariah fan.....then her style changed and she lost me somewhat.....her singing is also not as it used to be. I would'nt use either of the words 'icon' or 'legend' to describe Mariah, but I will say she does her thing without being obnoxious or catty to her fellow artist (like one in particular) and she really does seem like a sweet person....her attempts at 'sexy' makes me laugh, she's a bit mechanical when she performs live ( that hand movement she does always irks me).... but hey, the girls trying.....!lol

And as for that album cover.....not feeling it....I did'nt like Janet's cover as well and the Madonna one is'nt much better either.

vocal range goes to Mariah (i personally prefer her idol Minnie Riperton) but quality and tone is on Whitney's side, imo. she can belt the soul out of a song.

You could argue for quality on Whitney's side, I'll agree. Though I think Mariah has more deimension to her voice, a greater layer of quality, so I'd say they're even in that department. Mariah is amazing because of her entire range and the control she displays. She doesn't just hit high notes, she actually can sing within that range, and the same goes for her lower registers, she sings within that range and displays great control. Seth Riggs, who is Whitney's voice coach, said that any time she steps out of her comfort zone, she has a lot of trouble controling her voice. I love Whitney and think overall, she's had better songs the Mariah, but I just don't think she's as a good a singer.

that's undisputed, and though such technicalities are better than Houston's, i think for me the superior soulful quality and realness in Whitney's singing outweighs in terms of what i enjoy listening to. so..

we have to disagree

but as to her impact, some of you here must have been high to deny her the rightful praise in R&B history. hell, many even see her as the successor to Whitney. her vocals and the 80 million records she sold is a lot to be shrugged off as mere commercialism.

go listen to fantasy, emotions, dreamlover, one sweet day, breakdown, always be my baby, hell even we belong together and try to say that again lol

she is a bonafide R&B legend.

You've got that right arXter. Mariah is clearly more then an assembly line pop star. She's the real deal and a hell of a singer. She get's a lot of gruff around here, for some reason, but she's intense. She's been going strong for 15 plus years, she's not a product. There are only a handful of singers in the world on her level.

Anyone who thinks she can't sing live, just check out her concerts from the early and mid-90s. She was amazing.

I think she's got a lot of soul. "Vision of Love", "Butterfly", "Without You", "Anytime You Need A Friend", etc... Her voice changes from note to note, which I think is a sign of great quality.

mate she gets heat from just about everyone because of her millennium duds.

forgetting the fact that her Butterfly album >>>> anything by her current R&B "contemporaries"

skip to the powerful endings..

^^ um that's edited to make it seem longer at the end.. She did not hold that note for that long in real life..

She is a great singer but has always looked uncomfertable on stage.

LOL obviously, and the editor didn't try to make it seem like that. it's a compilation of the many times that tune was sung live..

Yeah man, she's awesome, even still. People try to say she can't sing live but that's total crap. I think she's just incredible live, as she is on record. Amazing power and control.

I don't care what people say, she's the bomb in my opinion.

Mariah is a great artist. Not only is she a world class vocalist, but as a song writer she is in a class by herself. I challenge anybody to name somebody as multi-talented in her genre. Alicia Keyes and Janet Jackson might stand a chance but there aren't many like Mariah in pop/R&B music history. She has always written her own material. She beat out the Jackson 5 when her first 5 singles all reached #1. She has been a steady force recording consistently through the 90's and 00's. Biggest selling artist of the 90s. She will hold the record for #1 singles all-time very shortly. More than the Beatles, Elvis, or Michael Jackson. That qualifies her as a legend people. She has a great talent for writing catchy upbeat songs and beautifully melodic ballads. She may not have the greatest stage presence as a pure performer, but nonetheless I'll take her skill set over most any diva.

Mariah's voice is a most definite bragging right but I wouldn't brag as far as her writing skills. Mediocre at best. I personally think her lyrical talents are as complex as something a 12 year old girl could come up with. Mariah's music hasn't evolved her entire career. I actually think that with each album her artistry has depleted. Her last album that had any type of depth was 1997's "Butterfly". That's just me. She can have all the #1's she wants but the quality of those #1's is where it's at- and in my opinion it is very low and VERY forgettable. Michael, Elvis, Beatles, and even Madonna and Janet all have much more memorable hits than Miss Carey. I'm sorry if I ruffle any feathers but I'm simply speaking my mind and trying to remain respectful at the same time. I could never look at Mariah Carey as a true legend because she hasn't contributed anything substantial to music. When I think of Mariah Carey there isn't any single "it" moment that stands out where I can say "OMG! Remember that time.... that performance.... that video....". Honestly, I draw a blank.

then she's also technically superior to mj

No, actually, she's not. Mariah only has about 1 half step larger range then Michael. Michael has a range of 4 octaves, about, Mariah has a range of 4.1. And considering Michael's technical brilliance in transitioning between registers, the control his displays, the timing and breathing technique, no one is technically better. Whitney has a range of about 3 octaves. Michael is superior to her as well, in every way.
