More than a Material Girl! Madonna joins the billionaires' club thanks to lucrative MDNA world tour and savvy investments

article-0-119AB500000005DC-445_638x797.jpg

Madonna has joined the ranks of the world's billionaires due to her hugely successful MDNA tour and a string of other business investments.

Named the 2012 top earner in pop music, the 54-year old was previously estimated to have accumulated a $700 million fortune.

But the Material Girl has certainly lived up to her moniker and tipped the scales, with the help of her 88 sell out shows grossing over $3.05 million, an additional $85 million income from her combined merchandise, TV rights and DVD sales and close to $100 million from other money-making endeavours.

Both the New York Post and Women's Wear Daily (WWD) confirmed her billionaire status this week, giving details about the ventures that have boosted her position on the celebrity rich list.

Last year, Madonna launched her debut perfume Truth or Dare which brought in $60 million in revenue according to WWD.

Continuing in the health and beauty sector, the singer also saw her financial status rise thanks to the launch of her own chain of gyms called Hard Candy.

Madonna’s Material Girl fashion chain was launched in Macy’s department stores in the U.S. three years ago with her eldest daughter, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon, 15, and reportedly brings in $10 million a year.

Off the back of her retail success, the W.E. director will be designing a shoe collection under the same name of her fragrance as well as a lingerie line for Macy’s.
Moving into the drinks sector, the award-winning performer made a lucrative investment into Vita Coco that has supposedly earned her millions.

She also landed an extra $10 million deal with Smirnoff vodka, who released a limited edition bottle in honour of her name and sponsored her worldwide tour.
In fact, the 88 shows across the world were so successful, MDNA was named the highest grossing tour of 2012 and ninth of all time.

The accompanying album hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard charts on its debut, and even her performance at the Superbowl Half Time show in 2012 secured more viewers than Beyoncé’s.

Despite being in the twilight of her career, the chameleon-like singer is still relevant in the changing landscape of music.

Madonna launched onto the music in 1982 with her hit dance single Everybody.
Two years later she predicted her financial success through her famous materialistic hit.

Certainly history has proven her words right, as ‘experience has made [her] rich’, and secured the luxury-filled futures of Lourdes and her other three kids: 12-year old Rocco - from her marriage to Guy Richie – and her 7-year old adopted children, Mercy Jamesand David Banda.

Re: Madonna joins BILLION-dollar club: report

Michael earned 1 billion dollars (altogether) years ago and maybe he was the first music artist, but nobody (has) ever credited his success for selling music (albums, singles, units...) and touring and his mega businnes investments=Sony/ATV..., one can wonder why Paul McCartney is considered to be a billionaire..., for what?

Maddona is a pure businesswoman using her name for selling herself... and only her tours have made her the hundrads of millions, not selling of her albums or music..., as well as the richiest so.called hip-hop artist P.Diddy by latest Forbes edition... his fortune is estimated at 580 million.... but not for selling his albums or music, but for Vodka and some merchandise brands..., Bono has his shares via Facebook estimated at 800 mill....

Only Michael is/was connected with music, being the real music mogul.

Re: Madonna joins BILLION-dollar club: report

well that is exactly why this is so unfair i find. Why do THEY get these articles as if they're pure bizz people? And why does Michael always get portrait in that same ol negative way? /when he bought the catalog all that was in the press was negative, some saying him snatching it awa blablabla but we all know the truth. Its just that its unfair but yeah, i could go on and on about this. Guess im going way off topic as this is 'M's spot:p

you're right. they say Madonna secured her kids' future, but they always said MJ's kids' future was uncertain while he was still here. They love to lie about him. Also, what they don't mention is that Madonna's 'Material Girl' uses the exact bass line rhythm of 'Can You Feel It' which Michael wrote for The Jacksons. Owning a catalogue the size of Michael's erm...makes one a billionaire. The ability to outbid McCartney, makes Michael a powerful billionaire...long ago. Why else would the media start to crucify him at that time, then?, as MJ stated. It's also interesting that these reports about Madonna come from tabloids. The New York Post is a noted American rag. It notoriously attacked Michael, regularly. Plus, I notice in that article that at times, they say Madonna SUPPOSEDLY earned big money in some cases. They do use the word supposedly Now I'm not saying Madonna didn't do well. Of course she did well. But the media is just scandalous, and suspect.

Yes, it's a Madonna thread, but it's a Michael fansite, and you have the right to speak as you spoke. Many have, in this section, before.

The Daily Mail Tabloid Story is said to be false by Forbes. Even the sources Daily Mail claimed for the info about Madonna's Billionaire status are said to be non existent and false ...

Why Madonna Isn't On The Forbes Billionaires List

Zack O'Malley Greenburg, Forbes Staff

FORBES released its annual Billionaires issue earlier this month, and the list features plenty of new faces
(Tory Burch, Renzo Rosso) alongside the usual suspects (Bill Gates, Warren Buffett).

There are plenty of entertainment moguls on the list (David Geffen, Oprah Winfrey), but there aren’t any billionaires who’ve gained their wealth by working as a musician or actor. Not Diddy or Jay-Z, not Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie—and not Madonna.

Yet earlier this week, the blogosphere exploded with declarations that the Material Girl had ascended to billionaire status. Most of the stories erroneously cited a WWD story as the source of this revelation (representatives from the publication confirm that no such piece exists), probably because of a New York Post item that initially linked to WWD before shifting its attribution to another site.

There’s a reason Madonna isn’t on our Billionaires list: simply put, she’s not a billionaire.

We estimated the singer’s net worth at $325 million six years ago. Since then, our wealth team has chronicled the scads of cash she’s earned via our Celeb 100 list, and while she’s earned a ton of money, the numbers don’t add up to anything near $1 billion. She earned $72 million in 2007, $40 million in 2008, $110 million in 2009 and $58 million in 2010. With no touring or new albums in 2011, she didn’t earn enough to make our list that year, then pulled in another $30 million through the first half of 2012.

Add it all up (plus whatever she earned in 2011–let’s call it $10 million) and you get $320 million. Lop off 35% for federal income taxes ($112 million), another 10% for state and local taxes ($32 million) and 20% for management, legal and agency fees ($64 million). That leaves $112 million before figuring in any expenses for housing, staff, travel or luxury goods.

What about that big concert tour? Most of the recent reports have mentioned Madonna’s past 12 months as the reason for her ascent into the financial pantheon, citing sales of her MDNA album and a world tour that grossed just over $300 million. They mention perfume sales of $60 million, tour merchandise sales of $75 million, and other branding deals that add up to $30 million.

But the difference between gross ticket sales, gross earnings and net earnings is ignored. Artists typically take home about one-third of gross ticket sales on the road–in Madonna’s case, that means $300 million becomes $100 million.

To gross $75 million in merchandise sales, she would have had to average sales of $34 per head on her tour (or about $10 more than Justin Bieber). And that’s just the gross number. For most artists, we project net earnings of $5 per head for merch; Bieber’s take tops the charts at about $10, according to his touring team. Let’s give Madonna the benefit of the doubt and say that she also nets $10 per head–over the course of a tour that drew 2.2 million fans, that would have added up to $22 million in take-home pay.

Madonna’s record deal guarantees her a base advance of $1 million per album, but MDNA hasn’t likely earned much more than that. It’s been certified gold in the U.S. for sales of over 500,000, and it seems likely the album has sold at least as many copies abroad. Still, that’s only a little more than a million copies sold, resulting in just a few million dollars in her coffers–about the same amount that most A-list entertainers net from perfume deals, regardless of heady gross sales.

But let’s be overly generous. Let’s say Madonna earned $200 million over the past year. Take away 65% for taxes and management fees, as we did before. That leaves $70 million. Combine that with the $112 million left over from 2007 through the first half of 2012, and you get $182 million. So even if Madonna had saved every single penny she’d earned since 2007–no travel costs, no living cost, no splurges–she’d be worth about $500 million.

Is it possible that she has other assets that have increased in value and therefore wouldn’t be figured into our annual earnings estimates? Sure. Her real estate holdings, art collection and stakes in other business ventures could have increased. But keep in mind that 2007 was the peak of a long bull market; assets that lost value during the recession are only now returning to those highs.

Madonna’s representatives wouldn’t respond to FORBES’ requests for comment on this story, as it seems was the case with all the stories about her net worth published over the past week. And this isn’t the first time FORBES has weighed in on inflated claims about the singer’s billionaire status–staff writer Clare O’Connor debunked one set back in 2010.

Madonna is a cultural icon, and undoubtedly one of the most successful entertainers of all time. She may well reach the billion-dollar mark one day. But as of now, at best, she’s only about halfway there.

You gotta love the Daily Mail.

When it's about Michael the lies they make up are all negative - like last time when they said that the Thriller Live musical closes down, and it wasn't true.

When it's about someone else (*cough* a white icon *cough*) they lie about her by making up positive lies...
