Liverpool 1988 - Beatles Medley performed by MJ?

After his two-hour set, including a Beatles medley in tribute to being in Liverpool, the superstar left the city and returned to America.

Source:

Is it true? Is there footage?
Apologies if you already know all of this! :)

There's audio only, afaik. EDIT - there is footage, see below.

@R1chard provided good info on this. Michael doesn't sing the medley, it's just the band. You can find the audio version on @MJbr2 YT channel. There's a time stamp for the Beatles medley. Keyboards very prominent. Loads of audience participation. Lots of noise for Yellow Submarine and Let It Be and then they all go crazy at the end.

I don't have the show bookmarked. I do love the medley but I'm more into BWT 1987, not so much 1988, but if you tag @MJbr2 I'm sure they'll help out.

Here's the list of Beatles songs:

Ok, I didnt read the whole thread yet, so I don't know if anybody else posted this, but during the last European date of the Bad tour, the show in Aintree, Liverpool, which I think was also the biggest show of the tour, the band played a medley of Beatles songs as the groove instrumental section.

Songs were:
Day Tripper
Taxman
I Wanna Hold Your Hand
Eleanor Rigby
Yellow Submarine
Drive My Car
Lady Madonna
Let It Be

Thanks for the tag!

Yeah, it's the band playing while Michael is off having a drink and getting changed. If you watch the Wembley DVD it's where they play Eric Clapton and Bee Gees (after Thriller and before Workin' Day and Night).

Presumably this was changed every night depending on what country/city they were in. I'd actually love to see a database with the list of medley songs for every night of the tour.

If you look at aerial photos of Aintree, there are two black squares on either side of the stage - I'm not sure if they're screens or not. Mostly it was during the 90s that shows started to have live video, but with MJ you never know if it was recorded or not.

We know at least a little bit was recorded bc there's television footage. Presumably it was one of the regional broadcasters but the footage is out there, just don't know how much. I'm guessing a tv crew wouldn't film the entire show bc they're only going to use a few seconds for the tv report. Actually, hang on ...

EDIT - @MJ5 ⬇️

oh, I'd forgotten about this ...
Full shows were filmed, including Aintree... We also know that a concert film was produced in the Summer of 1988 featuring shots from Paris & Wembley among others, clips seen in the live performance short film of Another Part Of Me. The source materials should still be in existence.. All the footage was turned over to Michael's storage facilities (presumably filed under optimum productions) at the conclusion of the tour.
Here’s my list:

- Bad Tour Aintree 1988: the only show from the tour which was confirmed to have been fully shot using film cameras. In many ways a special show. Michael at his peak and performing for his biggest crowd. It would be delightful to see this [...]

On that note, Wembley was also confirmed by Warren Eagles. Every time I get reminded of this it makes me sad that none of his concert films have been located/released yet.

I am crap at remembering this stuff but, yeah, you are spot on. Thanks for the reminder.

Otoh, I do remember seeing this thread when I used to spend a lot of time in the back pages ...

It's so depressing and frustrating. I don't want to go on and on about it bc I think I've probably said as much as I need to about all of this but ... just beyond annoying.

I'm here!

Not the whole piece. Each of the musicians had a solo spot during the jam, but Greg was the guy playing the random songs. The most recurring song was It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night by Prince which was even played on the July 16 show, but I reckon it was the Estate's call to edit that out of the DVD to avoid having to pay royalties (also Prince was not fond of people using his music, so who knows).

Greg left after the Tokyo shows to join Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler and John Barnes replaced him for the last 5 shows in LA. It seems Chris Currell took over his duties as you can hear him play a talkbox-ish version of Off The Wall, as well as Superstition on the final night.

In case you'd like to dive deeper into them, Bad Tour Source is at your disposal. You can find all the recordings available (although Bad Groove, the jam, is cut in some of them). It'd also be great if you'd be willing to take it upon yourself to create a list of which different songs were played in each night (some people even helped namedropping some of them in the comments of some videos).

ALL of MJs solo tours were taped in full by Nocturne Productions, a company he hired himself for the job. The problem lies within the fact that MJ didn't have a proper resource management back then. Also, he potentially stored everything at Neverland and we can't forget about the 2003 raid and how the FBI conducted it. While pieces of evidence of several tapes still existing have been shown over the years in multiple places, it is believed that some tapes are either lost or have been destroyed.

As for the additional film material, MJ had a second crew with film cameras rolling during the Bad and Dangerous tours. Mostly for the Another Part of Me music video project, but Warren Eagles, colorist and crew member, stated that a full concert film was edited from the bulk of footage shot during the Wembley dates in July, sent back to Frank's office in LA, but that's where the trail goes cold as its current location is unknown. What does survive is a handful of APOM performances from several shows, which ended up being used by Spike Lee to create a montage for the Bad 25 docu in 2012.

In regards of SD tape masters, the Estate has been disconsidering them since 2012 over the argument of them having "unusable audio", something that does not apply in times of AI and stem-separation tools. Also, Rome and Tokyo which have been widely available for years are reference for what they call "unusable audio" if you're curious. As for the video quality, they have used a brief snippet as a patch for a damaged part at the end of Billie Jean on the Wembley DVD which you can look up for yourselves.
