I'm only half way through the Michael chapter but I'm taking a break. So far, it's all lovely but it's still somehow so intense that I need to step back a bit. That long quote you just posted, that is SO intense. Can't decide if I'm feeling 🥰 or

I feel a knot in my stomach. This is all so sad. I am happy that Michael did, in fact, find real love, like he wished for, but it ended so sadly. And it was so hard for them to live their love, stay together peacefully and create a family ...

Lisa Marie was in London when Michael died on June 29, 2005, of cardiac arrest caused by propofol intoxication, but sat with his coffin for hours after his funeral.

“My mother told me that she communicated with Michael through her dreams for months after he died,” Riley said.

This explains why she became friends with Karen Faye years later, two obsessed crazy women

So I read the chapters Mimi onwards right to the very end on the kindle this morning. Whilst her last years were extraordinarily melancholy completely embroiled in addiction to an extent that I thought was far worse than Michael ever was - the irony of it all (but that was my understanding of it…) , aside from the birth of her twin daughters it was pretty rubbish for LMP. The chapters on Ben Ben had me balling my eyes out.

There was nothing we in fandom didn’t know already in Mimi …. The narrative of he was manipulative and calculative carried on - it was disappointing she would constantly second guess , call him a ‘snake’ despite Mimi bearing his soul to her in every imaginable way you could conceive, I believe the Presley camp said Michael was going to file for divorce and that it would be better she filed first - this was complete heresay turns out and Michael was devastated.

Two things that really got under my skin - Karen Faye said Michael feigned a fall as he didn’t want to do the one night only HBO special ….. hooookay then these two women became besties swapping notes did they?!! No wonder Michael wanted to distance himself from ms Faye!!!

If I wasn’t mildly annoyed about the mofo Danny Keough in all of this then I was absolutely annoyed by the end of the chapter - he didn’t want his children near Michael- said Ben shouldn’t be sitting on Michael’s lap - Danny Keough also got his news from the tabloids nice nice good for him. I have no doubt he was in her ear too … they were doomed from the get go - it felt they were such a wonderful couple that were never given half a chance which is what’s sad about the whole thing.

Lisa Marie saying she read Michael like a book but she appeared to create her own narrative half the time - not a criticism but it seems like the pot calling kettle black.

I will read the chapter preceding Mimi tomorrow .

All in all I’m glad I can draw a line under it now completely and fully understand why Michael too drew a line under that relationship- it sounded exhausting. He must have not wanted to be painted as a conniving loose cannon by the Presley camp.

[...] What did everyone else think?!
Too soon to say.

I read the Michael chapter, skipped around trying to find stuff about her music - she doesn't seem to have written about it, as far as I can see - and now I've started at the beginning. I wasn't even going to read that early section bc most of it is stuff I already know but actually I'm finding it very interesting albeit very intense and emotional.

Disappointed by the lack of music content but she had a busy life. One book was never going to be enough space for all the different elements of her life.

Correct - there seems to be entire chunks of her life being omitted equally some elements she and Riley go into great detail and depth which was a bit odd but I have read some snippets re: Prissy dear on X and they sound like stuff I’d like to read with some popcorn whilst I congratulate myself for sussing that woman for the compete imbecile that she is!

I found the bit about her speaking to him in her dreams absolutely endearing - I suspect people who lose loved one have those spiritual connections and Mimi was certainly someone who was deeply connected to Lisa and her children …

I also had to go and listen to Happy Birthday Lisa from the Simpsons!!! How sweet. A friend like beeeennnnn 🥰

It is lovely, but it also makes me quite sad atm.
I hear you. :( 🤗

Rambling thoughts which might or might not qualify as spoilers!

Am almost at the end of the book and wish I hadn't started, ngl. I haven't learnt too many things that were new, just 2 or 3 things, but they were pretty devastating. My plan was to avoid reading the early part of the book bc I think her childhood was grim but I dived in anyway. Big mistake. Other things - for me, there's not enough about her music plus there's a quote from Lisa Marie saying her music wasn't successful. I don't know what measure she's using - record sales, ticket sales for her gigs, did the record label not renew her contract after that last album? - but it made me sad bc there's a lot of good stuff in her music. We'll never have the chance to find out more about what she thought about her music career. She got some good feedback from fans and she liked that but there is so much more I would like to know. If she had lived she could easily have done a 3-volume autobiography. But she died so this little thing is all we'll ever get.

Darn, I love autumn, but this year it has been quite melancholy so far ... 🥺
💯

I need to see the back of this year. I'm fed-up to the back teeth with it. :(

Wait she called Mike a snake....but yet said he was normal I'm confusec

I don't think they will it's too complex
I can definitely see a film company or Netflix being interested in this. She did have a complicated life but most biopics leave out loads of stuff. Otoh, her son died and she never really recovered from that heartbreak and then she died (too young) and all of that would be too much of a downer for the film to end on so perhaps it won't happen. It's not something I want to see, I was just thinking out loud.

The book is really painful, imo. A film probably would be too much. :(

I just finished reading the part about MJ. Overall, it’s mostly positive (and emotional), except for the end where she refers to him as a "snake." I have to say, though, there wasn't much that I didn’t already suspect or hadn’t heard in interviews before. On one hand, I’m glad they were able to experience such intense love with each other, but on the other, I think the relationship was doomed from the start. They were two very complicated and stubbern people with eccentric lives, which drew them together but probably made their relationship hard to sustain in the long run.

Trust the media to pick up on MJ being a virgin at 35 apparently 🙄

They love to make a mockery out of him

There was less time spent on exploring Lisa Marie’s marriage to Michael Jackson, which is explored in considerably greater depth in the book. Keough did say that her mother was truly and madly in love with Jackson, before things went south some time into their marriage. “She really was obsessed with him. I remember when he would come to the house and she would run to her bathroom and put her makeup on and panic and want to get herself all dressed up for him. She just adored him. … I can only speak to my experience with Michael, and my experience was that he was only kind and loving to me and my family, and I saw them in a very seemingly happy, loving relationship. I think that probably our version of normal was a little bit different, but for me in my life, it felt very normal.”

I've avoided this thread deliberately yet I cannot put this off any longer... um.... book is now finally ordered ..and that's coming soon. I can see it will be ... a turbulent and tense possible painful read.
Mimi, ? okay.
let the thread peeps know my thoughts in due course .

by the way . @Amy454 to me, I genuinely believe Lisa Marie Presley was not crazy. Far from being unhinged.
I am so surprised to hear crazy and her beautiful name in one sentence there.
M picked her as his wife. He picked her to marry. Spend his life with. Would M pick a crazy person to do all that with? ... I think not.

Lisa Marie Presley is speaking from the grave.

Her daughter, Riley Keough, has just published her posthumous memoir taken from recordings Riley made with her mom. They shed an extraordinary light on long unanswerd questions.

Michael Jackson fans will now get Lisa Marie’s side of their odd marriage in the mid 90s. It’s actually unclear if it was ever consummated. Michael told Lisa Marie he’d wanted to get married to have children. If she wouldn’t do it, he said, he’d already secured a promise of kids with Debbie Rowe, his doctor’s nurse.

Keough says she and her brother Ben would call Michael “Mimi” because Ben couldn’t say his name (he was a baby). Lisa Marie says in the book that she loved Michael because he was “normal,” but you have to remember she was the daughter of Elvis Presley and had been in Graceland as a child when he did. Lisa Marie’s idea of normal is a little skewed.

Keough says, “I think Michael got right at my mom’s core. She wanted to fix him, and she felt he was misunderstood, a feeling she was very familiar with.”

Lisa Marie writes in the book:

“As for child molestation, I never saw a goddamn thing like that. I personally would’ve killed him if I had.”

Eventually this peculiar relationship came to a quick end. The reason? Drugs. Michael started spending a lot of time at the doctor’s office — this would have been Arnold Klein, Michael’s Dr. Feelgood and Debbie Rowe’s boss. In New York, Lisa Marie reveals, Michael ditched filming an HBO special at the last minute.

Lisa Marie says: “I think he didn’t want to do it, so he feigned a fall and went to the hospital. I kept asking what was wrong with him, and I got a different answer every day. Karen, his makeup artist, told me that he’d totally planned it because he didn’t want to do the HBO thing.”

When Lisa Marie arrived at Michael’s hospital room in New York, she found he was surrounded by by his mother, his team, and his own anesthesiologist. She says: “Nobody has their own anesthesiologist—every hospital has their own. It was a big red flag.”

The marriage was over soon after that.

Some other hot takes from “From Here to the Great Unknown”: Lisa Marie hated her mother, Priscilla, who she felt was constantly fobbing her off on various schools. She says they got into Scientology after Priscilla had a chance meeting with John Travolta. When Priscilla sent Lisa Marie to live at the Scientology Center in Hollywood, she immediately took the mirror off the wall and did coke.

Lisa Marie recalls Priscilla “had mostly just dumped me off into Scientology because she thought they could handle me. Scientology kind of raised me for her. But every time she’d try to get me into a boarding school, I’d fuck with the admission test and they wouldn’t take me.”

There’s no explanation why, but Lisa Marie does say in the recordings that she left Scientology as time went on. I wrote a lot about that at the time. She finally realized they were soaking her for money, which she couldn’t afford.

There’s more in the book, it’s actually a fascinating read in that it does answer some questions about what was going on all those years. Lisa Marie’s death is a tragedy. It seems like she knew it, too. Bravo to Riley for publishing the book. It’s courageous.
