Report: Kanye's Mom Passes Away

Kanye West's Mother, Dr. Donda West, died early today according to Hot 97's Miss Info. Kanye was in London when he was given the tragic news. He is currently on his way back to the United States.

Rhymefest, who co-wrote Kanye's hit song "Jesus Walks," confirmed the news to WGCI-FM in Chicago.

West was often open about the close relationship he shared with his mother. Dr. Donda West worked as the Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University before retiring to become her son's manager. No information on the cause of death is yet available.

According to Essence, Kanye's mom was the CEO of West Brands, LLC at the time of her death. She was also the chair of the Kanye West Foundation.

Calls to Kanye's management were not immediately returned.

Donda West, the mother of hip-hop star and Chicago native Kanye West, died early Sunday in Los Angeles.

The former English professor at Chicago State University also was her son's manager and the chairwoman of the Kanye West Foundation.

Earlier this year, she released a book, "Raising Kanye," that chronicled her son's childhood.

A West spokesperson confirmed the death, saying "the family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief

Sad news. I heard on the news that she died due to complications arising from cosmetic surgery.

My God, I heard about this yesterday. My heart goes out to Kayne and the rest of the family. She seemed like such a beautiful role-model, wish she could have had more time on this earth to share her knowledge and strength with those who could learn from her ways. Kayne and her seemed so close. I really hope that he has people to lean on during this time. Bless the West family.

I know I nearly cried when I saw it on my front page as breaking news. It's tragic! I saw her just a few months ago on Ellen Degeneres WITH Kanye talking about the book she had published about him! This is terrible! :( I wish them all my condolences and for ms west, RIP.

Just horrible. I was so shocked when I read about this on accesshollywood.com. Just so sad for my man. My heart is breaking for him.

The more I hear about this tragic story, the more I just want to vomit. My goodness. *Sigh*.

Let his beloved mother rest in peace.

Kayne has been out of the country (U.S.) since the passing of his mother. He is set to return to attend his mother's funeral Tuesday. While he has cancelled a number of U.S. appearances, including the Victoria Secret gig, he has an European tour underway. He was onstage in Paris Saturday night and he had quite a moment on stage when attempting to perform the song he wrote for his mother. Very sad...

Only a week after his mother's death, Kanye West returned to the concert stage Saturday night in Paris, only to dramatically break down in tears, audience members tell PEOPLE.

Nearing the end of the more than 60-minute performance, with the riff of "Hey Mama" beginning, West attempted to introduce the tribute to a sold-out crowd at Le Zénith in Paris, saying "this song is for my mother...." and could get no further.

"He just cracked," one attendee tells PEOPLE, "He was at the end of his concert and had just started to dedicate the song and then he just lost it completely."

"He said the word, 'Mother' and just couldn't go any further," Le Parisien journalist Meddy Magloire said. "A back-up singer, the DJ and a guitar player came over to console him. It looked like he might collapse. He just couldn't continue. He just stood there in a spotlight, crying while the band continued playing."

After a few moments of stunned silence, Magloire says, the audience of 5,000 reacted by offering calls of encouragement, which grew into applause.

The band restarted the song, but West left the stage, returning after 10-15 minutes to conclude the concert with a rousing performance of "Stronger."

"He was very nervous, seemed to have gathered himself up, and had a lot of energy," Magloire says. "He kept shouting out to the audience, 'I need you... I need you right now.' and the public was screaming back. It was magic."

Surprise Appearance

West had been reclusive since death of his mother. He cancelled a Victoria's Secrets performance on Thursday and was not at the memorial for her in Chicago on Friday.

His arrival in Paris at the Hotel Le Meurice on Friday, accompanied by fiancée Alexis Phifer and her son, was unexpected, coming just hours after another scheduled concert set for Monday in Amsterdam was officially cancelled.

West is scheduled to perform in Brussels on Sunday night. It's now expected he will return to the United States for his mother's funeral in Oklahoma City on Tuesday afternoon before returning to Europe to perform in London on Thursday.

The funeral of Donda West was today. Kanye was there. My heart really goes out tohim.

BTW, if you guys are interested, the plastic suregon who operated on Kanye's mother will be on Larry King tonight.
