OMMMMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG ok Im writing this the morning after the 1st ever Irish Michael Jackson event. For the last 10 years I have been travelling to London, central Europe and America for fan events. There has never been a big fan community in Ireland and we have had to travl to other countries for everything. Ive always wanted my home town to experience just a little Michael Magic and last night it fianlly happened.
The day started early in the morning when I had arranged to meet up with some fan friends I hadnt seen in a long time. I dont get home to to Dublin often and it was soo nice to spend some time with friends, and catchup up on all the news. Reeta had travelled to Dublin for the show and as it was her first time here, I tried to show her around Dublin but we didnt have much time to see anything.
We headed home in the afternoon to get ready for the show as it was a night time show. The tickets said the doors open at 7.30pm and the show was going to start at 8.15pm. We got to the venue around 6pm, and as we expected there no one else was there but we could here Michael music so we guessed some of the performers were rehearsing. We saw someone at the door and stated talking to him. At first we thought he worked in the venue but then we realised he was on of the Irish performers. It was Deccy from Cork who sometimes posts on MJJC. I have spoken to him online a few times so it was great to finally meet him in person. He spoke to us for awhile but had to go back in.
We decided to wait around as Deccy said not all the performers were there yet. After a while Navi arrived and we managed to talk to him too. Reeta brought some Finnish chocolate for Navi as a gift, which he loved, but later told us he's trying to lose some weight! LOL In case you hadnt noticed Reeta is in love with Navi! We also spoke to Antony O'Hanlan, another Irish performer, who I have also met a few times over the years. It was great to see some familar faces as, this being the first time something like this has happened in Dublin, we didnt know how a Dublin audience would be.
By now a queue was starting but I was very disapointed not to recognise many faces. There are about 10 to 15 Irish fans who I have got to know over the years. Some of these fans regulary travel to London for fan events, yet none of them could be bothered to turn up to the first event in Ireland. Says it all really, its no wonder that the fan community in Ireland is almost non exsistant, when they cant be bothered to support an Irish event!!
The doors opened around 7.30 and of course we headed straight for the middle front of the stage. The venue is an old theatre which has been converted into a music venue. Its a very small place and the stage is tiny but it suited the show very well. At the front were me and Reeta, Dolorus from Czech Republic but who lives in Dublin and about 6 fans the Uk. Everyone else was hanging back, at the back and sides, not really sure what to expect.
We tried to get abit bit of Michael atmosphere going by doing some chants from the hotels but it was only when the lights went down thatpeople actully moved a bit closer to the stage.
The show started with a video montage made by Wes and that set us off for the the show. Girls you will know what I mean, seeing Michael on a big screen is the best way to start a night...................
Anyway, back to the show! The first performer was Danny Oliver, and he did Jam and Wanna Be Starting Somthing. As usual he burst onto the stage and really got the crowd going. Being at the front was soo much fun as it was all real fans, most of whom had travelled from a different country and like we always do at fan events, we make as much noise as possible.
Next up was Decy who did Dangerous and something else, sorry Deccy if you are reading this, my brain is still slightly mush!! Its was soo brillant to see an Irish performer at an Irish event being just as good if not better than some of the Uk performers who have been doing fan events for many years. Cant wait to see him at an event in London.
Next it was time to slow things down with some live singers. All the singers did ballads and again I was really impressed with everyone. This is what Ive always wanted , to see Irish performers paying tribute to Michael for an Irish audience.
Cheryl Harte did a brillant job singing You Are Not Alone, despite some technical problems at the start, and she also sang I Just Cant Stop Loving You with Niall Colgan. Then Niall sang She's Out Of My Life. Then we had an accoustic version of Heal The World sung by Wa'el and Antony O'Hanlan gave a brillant performance of Human Nature and Man In The Mirror. He did a little bit of Blame It On The Boogie which the crowd loved.
In between the ballads we had 2 rare Michael videos on the big screen. Well I say rare, not to us but to the majority of the audience, Hold My Hand and What More Can I Give.
There was also an amazing performance of Who Is It sung live by Antony with beatboxing by Danny.
And now for the main act Navi........... OMMMMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGGGG It was really great to hear and see everyone's reaction to him. He performed for about an hour and the whole place was singing and dancing.
About halway though Navi's performance there was a dance contest. Navi picked about 7 people from the audience to come up on stage and do a little bit of dancing. You could tell they were not really fans as some of them looked a bit shocked when he said they had to some only Michael moves. In the end, a real fan won, Dusty the organiser, as it was kinda obvious some of the people just wanted to be onstage for their "5 mins" of fame!!
The show ended with all the performers joining Navi onstage for a group singlaong to We Are The world. The atmosphere was amazing and when the show ended no one wanted to leave. We stayed around talking for as long as we could and all the performers came out and took photos with the audience.
We eventully ended up in a nightclub, and just chilling out with everyone after the show.
All I can say is well done Dusty, you did it. We had some rocky times during the planning stages but its Michael that matters not all the crap that goes on with the fans. Last night was all about Michael and thats the only way it should be.
Everyone had a brillant time and we cant wait until the next one
